a difference of birth yr - accoding to Kay Hawks, 1115 N 2, Norton, KS 67654 the date is 1795 His name was also spelled 'Cebirt'. In the move to Missouri, the family consisted of Mariah Perkins and her husband, Reuben Perkins; Susan; Robert P; Ransom H; Amanda; Permelia H. and M.C. leaving the eldest Spartan F. who afterwards came through horseback; also with the family came two Negro women and one negro girl. It may be interesting to know that on this long trip, Sebried Rhea rode horseback, riding ahead of the company, finding the best roads and the best placed to camp, while Mrs. Rhea rode in a one-horse carry all with the two youngest children, and the others road in the wagons pulled by oxen part of the time, while other walked and drove their cattle and loose horses. The first stop was made in the forks of Grand River, a few mile north of where Trenton now is in Grundy County, (but at that time what is now Grundy county and Mercer county was part of Livingston county) on what was know as the "Lyda Farm" leaving part of of the family there to winter, and taking those that were able to make a "hand" proceeded north to what is known as "Groshen Prairie" and bought two claims from Emery Hickman and Jackson Williams (two squatters), and then began to improve what is known as the "old Rhea Farm" situated about 8 miles southwest of Princeton and about three miles aouthwest of Goshen. Afterwards Mr. Rhea went to the land office and entered this land. It was among the first land ever entered in the county, he being the third permanent settler here. In those days and for several years following the mail was brought from Chilicothe,MO and the milling done at that place. One man in the country would go to mill and get the mail for all the rest. The bill of fare consisted of corn bread and hog meat with almost any wild game desired, and lye hominy thrown in for a charge, with plenty of mile and butter, and a little "coffee, if you please", of a Sunday morning. There were all sorts of game, from the cottontail rabbit to the deer. Along about the fall of 1847 or '48 Seabrid Rhea bought of Rev Thompson, living in Grundy county near where the town of Spickard now is, two negro boys. The oldest one whose name was William, always called :Nigger Bill" was 13 years old when he came to the Rhea farm, and the other, whose name was Simon, was about 11 years old. These two boys and the oldest negro woman that he bought from Tennessee stayed with the Rhea family until spring of 1865, when Sebrid Rhea sold the farm and moved to Leon,Iowa taking all of them with him. Then the negro boys went to working for themselves, but in 1872 the old farm was re-purchased by him and the negro woman came back to Missouri and stayed with the family until the death of Mr. & Mrs. Rhea, which occured February 2nd, 1878 and February 6th, 1879 respectively. Then Aunt "Tiller" (the negro woman) as she was familarly called, went to Leon,Iowa and died March 16, 1894, living to a ripe old age. The youngest of the negro boys died in Daviess county Mo, several years ago. the oldest one died in Leon, Iowa, October 16,1910. In regard to the children of Sebrid & Nancy Ehea: The eldest son Spartan F. married Nncy Mickey early in the '40's and eventually moved to Kansas, where he died several years ago. Mariah married Reuben Perkins in Tennesssee before they came west, and lived and died near Goshen, where they first settled. Susan married George Clinkenbeard, and lived and died in Harrison county, MO., February 29,1904. Robert P., better known as "Perry", married Lucy Prichard and finally moved to Kansas, where he died a few years ago. Ransom H., better known as "Houston," married Lyda Evertt and lived in Harrison county, MO, dying March 2nd 1904. Amanda married David Thompson and now lives in Mt Moriah, MO. Another son, Marcus L. died in childhood, M.C., known as Clayton, the youngest that came from Tennessee, being at that time two years old, married Maranda Melton, who died many years ago, and he is now living with his only daughter in Leon, Iowa.

There is a tombstone in the Goshen Cemetery in Mercer Co, Mo, which can not be accounted for. This thombstone reads: Mandan E., dau o R. & M. Perkins died Aug 4, 1848, aged 2m 2d. this child is not a child of Reuben and Mariah (Rhea)Perkins to the knowledge of Sylvia (Bushong) Morrow, daughter of Mary Adelia Perkins. Mr. Rhea was a pioneer, having come to Kansas thirty nine years ago. He brought his family with him from Nebraska, bought land two miles southeast of where Yates Center now stands and there he lived until removing to Yates Center a few years ago. Mr Rhea was born in White county, Tennessee, March 5, 1825 , of Virginia ancestry who had their part in the Revolution. In 1838 he moved with his father's family to Mercer County, MO Eight years leter he was married to Luann Pritchard, whose parents were also "first settlers", coming over the Cumberland mountains into Kentucky, and years later to Missouri. Mr & Mrs Rhea were of two of the first five families who settled in Mercer County. At hte close of the war they removed to Cass Couny, Neb.,and in 1869 to the county and state. Woodson County had hitherto received few settlers. The roads were prairie trails through grass taller than a man. The Woodruff and Landes families had farms in the locality and the Davidson and Agnew families came shortly after. Many others came, too, during the years that followed, but most of them soon gave up the struggle, and left to stronger and braver spirits the holding of the country. No other hardships or disaster that befell the family during these early years was so great as the loss of the wife and mother in 1874. Mr. Rhea was a strong and vigorous man, but for more than a year before his death he had been in declining health. His final illness lasted but a few days. The funeral service was helf Friday morning at the residence, Rev. M. Moore and G.H. Lam officiating. Interment was made in the Kalida cemetery. Deceased is survived by his sons, Myron and Robert, and daughter Mrs. McKinney, all of this city, his eldest daughter living in Nebraska and his oldest son in Washington. Miss Metta Rhea is a grand-duaghter, her father having been killed by a railroad train in 1891.

2. Kay Hawks, 1115 N 2, Norton, KS 67654 - 1836 Obituary, Mercer Co.MO, Came Here From Tennessee With an Ox Team and Wagon. The subject of this sketch was the son of Sebird and Nancy Cook Rhea. Born in White County, Tenn, Dec 1, 1836; departed this life after an extended illness at Leon, Iowa, Saturday morning, Feb 21, 1920, age 83 years, 2 months, and 20 days. His parents moved from Tennessee and settled in Mercer County, MO., when he was a child two years of age, making the journey with an ox team. Here he grew to manhood and where he spent the greater part of his life and found much pleasure in visiting the old church yard at Goshen where many of his hear one lay at rest. His education was manily that of the rural schoold, but later he attended college at Camden Point, MO. For a number of years he followeded the profession of teaching, was a good worker in the church and the community, always lending his servicess to the sick and to those whom he could assist. He was next to the last of eleven children and the last of the family to succumb to death. He was united in marriage to Miss Miranda Melton of Mercer County, Missouri, Jan 13, 1853. To this union were born seven boys and three girls, five of whom grew, to manhood. Only two are left --Eva Rhea of Leon,IA., and W.J. Rhea of Hobart, OK., with six grand-children and many relatives and friends, to pay the last respects to one who will be missed in our midst. He was united with the church of Christ in early life and during his long and eventful life his faith in Christ as the son of God and his Savior never faltered. He was upright in his dealings with his fellowmen, sociable, kindly disposed toward all and generous hearted even to a fault. The wife and mother departed this life Sept. 26th 1886. The home was kept for two years, them came the giving up of the home, he making his home with his son James, in Grundy county, later he spent some time at the home of W.J., his son of Hobart, OKLa., and the last ten years with his daughter in Leon,Iowa, where the final summons came. During his long life he was blessed with a strong and healthy body and mind, knew much of the Bible and its teaching. Failing in health the past year, the much dreaded disease pneumonia cliamed his body as a victum, when his soul took its flight. Funeral services were held at the home Tuesday morning at 10 A.M., conducted by Rev. P. H. Green. A quartette composed of Dr. Rowell, Ralph McGinnis and wife, Mrs. J.A. Caster, Mrs Bert Woodward pianst, sang the old familiar hymns. The body with its flower laded casket were taken by auto to the Goshen cemetery where short services consisting of prayer and the song, "In The Old Church Yard," was sung by his nieces, after which he was laid to rest in the family lot.
