General Notes for Child Francis Marion General
Francis Marion, b. Berkely County, S.C., c.1732, d. Feb. 2 7, 1795, known as "the Swamp Fox," was a guerrilla commande r during the American Revolution who helped keep the rebe l cause alive in South Carolina in 1780 and 1781. He sat i n the South Carolina Provincial Congress in 1775 and subseq uently became a militia officer. After the British capture d Charleston in 1780, he and a band of irregulars roamed th e coastal marsh country, raiding enemy outposts and disrupt ing British and Loyalist activity. In 1781 he commanded th e militia at the Battle of Eutaw Springs. After the war, Ma rion served in the South Carolina legislature and the stat e constitutional convention of 1790.
