Robert Emery was born and raised on a farm near Hampton, AR. He left home to find work as a treenager, going south to the Lousiana oilfields. he also worked as a blacksmith, a roller-skating rink attendant in St. Smith, and various other jobs. IN 1909 or 1910, he visited his brother John Calvin in Okalahoma City, OK and went into business with John Calvin in the furniture business on California Street. Later, he opened his own store on Reno St., and then on May Avenue.

Lillian's family moved to Little Rock, where she was educated. She was very musical and played the piano well. She went to work in Edward Cornish's bank as a secretary, which is where she met Robert Emery.

During Word War II, Liet. Gene Cornish served in the Mediterranean theater of war for at least 14 months. She was stationed with the 16th Evacuation Hospital in Italy, and was in the invasion of North Africa, and then followed it into Sicily, and onto Rome. While in Italy, she was given a rosary by the Pope.
