General Notes (Husband)
[mytree.FTW]
His will is dated 10-11-1764 and proven 9-5-1785 in New York. Abraham of Bushwick in 1761 came into possession of 60 acres of land that extended along the East River, from the old Brooklyn line to a little north of the present day Broadway and from the East River front to near Tenth Street, on which during the early days of 1667 a block house was erected as a resort for the scattered settlers in case hostility from the Indians, upon the high point of land which jutted into the East River about the foot of 4th Street, and which was known in olden times as the "Keike" of "Lookout". In 1693, Kip's executors sold the farm to Jacobus Bobin, a resident of Long Island, who was in until his death about 1741. It is afterward found in the possession of one Abraham Kershow who devised it to his sons Jacob and Martin, who were in possession as late as 1786, when they divided the farm, Jacob taking the northerly and Martin the Southerly halves.

General Notes (Husband)
[mytree.FTW]
Anthony is listed as Anthony Cozar among the early settlers of Piscataway Township, Middlesex County, New Jersey. Later, his name appears on the Dutch Reformed Church of Raritan (Somerville), Somerset County, New Jersey.
Notes (Marriage)
[mytree.FTW]
Marriage records of the Dutch Reformed Church shows "Anthony Cousart Ingeschreven July 17, 1696, j.m. Van N. Yorck, en Lysbeth Valentine, August 2, 1696, j. d. Van Schenecatade, beyde Woonende alhier."
Anthony and Elizabeth sold their house in Cripple Bush, Brooklyn, March 20, 1703. It appears to be a reasonable suppositionthat Anthony, with his family, migrated to the Raritan region of New Jersey prior to 1712 with other settlers who left in large numbers from the neighborhood of Brooklyn between 1680 and 1720.
General Notes for Child Jacob Cossart III
[mytree.FTW]
Jacob seems to be one of the first of the Bound Brook and Rarditan, NJ families not to have his children or at least part of them baptized at the Raritan Dutch Church. He seems to have been a life long member of the Presbyterian Church and did marry into one of the englich or Scottish Presbyterian families of the area. The only two records found to establish the fact that jacob had at one time been a resident of the Succasunny Plains near the Black River is found in the history of the First Presbyterian Church of Morristown 1742 to 1891. On page 1 appears the marriage record April 12, 1745 Eliphalet Lewis and Elizabeth Cusat of Black River, and on page 6, appears the baptismal record August 28, 1743 of Lea, daughter of Jacob cusat of Succasunny. Elizabeth was Jacob's eldest daughter, while Lea was the youngest. The Succasunny Presbyterian Church had not at this time been organizaed and it is evident that Jacob must have attended the Morristown Church at this period.
He doubtless had other children than the eight mentioned in his will, but if so, they must have died in childhood and no record of them can now be found. Jacob's will, which is here given, was probated at Perth Amboy but is now on file in Trenton, NJ.
When he went to what is now Roxbury Township in western Morris County is not known but, his will shows that some time after 1745, he had returned to the scenes of his childhood in Bridgewater Township, Somerset, NJ, where we find him a resident and land owner at the time of his death in 1772.
He is buried in the Old Presbyterian Church yard, near the corner of East Main Street and East Street at bound rook, Somerset, NJ.
A broken sandstone slab erected by his sons mark his grave. His three oldest sons, Jacob, Samuel and Job, became the fathers of practically all theat part of the family in America and those in foreign lands who now use the name Cozad, while his youngest son Anthony is the father of those using the names of Cosad and Casad.

Bastardy Bonds - Bety J & Edwin A. Camin 1990 Bastardy Bonds were posted to protect the county or parish from the expense of raising an illegitimate child. When pregnancy or birth of such a child was brought to the attention of the court, a warrant was issued and the woman brought to court. She was questioned under oath and asked to declare the name of the father. The reputed father was then served a warrant and required to post bond. If none was named, the woman, her father, or some other interested party would post bond. Sometimes the woman and reputed father posted. If no bond was posted and no father named, the woman could be sent to jail.
Granville County records (Bastardy Bond) 1775 Diannah Park - James Cozort and Anthony Cozort, bondsmen
All children referred to in James' will were born to him and Sarah Brinkeley, even though they didn't formally marry until 1796.
He acknowledged the first five children with the Brinkley middle name in his will, and he must have gone to court and legitimized them before he died, but I have not seen a document to that effect.

In personal appearance, David was tall, erect in form with a pleasing address and cultured manners.
General Notes for Child Jacob Cassatt
[mytree.FTW]
He died while a member of the Pennsylvania Legislature. He was six feet in height, weighed abot 170 pounds, was dark complexion, amiable in disposition and dignified in deprtment. In 1819, he was elected to the State Legislature and served four sessions, and afterwards to the State Senate, where he died on Christmas night in 1838, in his 61st year his life.
In politics, he was a Whig, and a man of great learning and ability, and an eloquent debater and while in the House and Senate, a recognized leader of his party. On the night of Dec. 25, 1838, on the occasion of what is known in Pennsylvania history as the "Buckshot War", he made an impassioned appeal against mob rule and with four others, was driven from the Senate chamber at the risk of his life. The next morning, he was found dead in his bed.

General Notes (Husband)
[mytree.FTW]
David was a stone mason and engaged in the building and contracting trade in which he became quite wealthy for that period. The NYC tax records show that he was a property owner in both the north and south wards of the city, where he purchased and deeded property. Records also show that during the time David was living in New York City, he purchased lands extensively between the years 1700 and 1728, at and in the near vicinity of what is now Bound Brook, Somerset, NJ. About the year 1719, David Cosart came over from NYC, and purchased considerable property along the Raritan, NJ. His will was dated 1736 in Somerset Co, NJ an was probated in 1740.
General Notes for Child Joris (George) Cossart

Was a bricklayer by trade.
General Notes for Child David Cossart II
[mytree.FTW]
David received a one hundred acre tract of land in the vicinity of Bound Brook, NJ and Raritan. This family line seems to be the only one in America that maintains the original French spelling of the Cossart name.
