General Notes (Husband)
[mytree.FTW]
Jacob seems to be one of the first of the Bound Brook and Rarditan, NJ families not to have his children or at least part of them baptized at the Raritan Dutch Church. He seems to have been a life long member of the Presbyterian Church and did marry into one of the englich or Scottish Presbyterian families of the area. The only two records found to establish the fact that jacob had at one time been a resident of the Succasunny Plains near the Black River is found in the history of the First Presbyterian Church of Morristown 1742 to 1891. On page 1 appears the marriage record April 12, 1745 Eliphalet Lewis and Elizabeth Cusat of Black River, and on page 6, appears the baptismal record August 28, 1743 of Lea, daughter of Jacob cusat of Succasunny. Elizabeth was Jacob's eldest daughter, while Lea was the youngest. The Succasunny Presbyterian Church had not at this time been organizaed and it is evident that Jacob must have attended the Morristown Church at this period.
He doubtless had other children than the eight mentioned in his will, but if so, they must have died in childhood and no record of them can now be found. Jacob's will, which is here given, was probated at Perth Amboy but is now on file in Trenton, NJ.
When he went to what is now Roxbury Township in western Morris County is not known but, his will shows that some time after 1745, he had returned to the scenes of his childhood in Bridgewater Township, Somerset, NJ, where we find him a resident and land owner at the time of his death in 1772.
He is buried in the Old Presbyterian Church yard, near the corner of East Main Street and East Street at bound rook, Somerset, NJ.
A broken sandstone slab erected by his sons mark his grave. His three oldest sons, Jacob, Samuel and Job, became the fathers of practically all theat part of the family in America and those in foreign lands who now use the name Cozad, while his youngest son Anthony is the father of those using the names of Cosad and Casad.
General Notes for Child Samuel Cozad

Samuel had been an elder in the Hill Top Presbyterian Church at Menham. The church was burned in 1816 and the headstone marking his grave was destroyed. His will is dated 15 Feb 1806 and is on file at Morristown, NJ.

General Notes for Child Hubbard Cozart
[mytree.FTW]
Hubbard purchased the land owned by his first cousin Hiram Brinkley Cozart sometime after the death of Hiram in 1816. One of Hiram's sisters, who was born after the marriage of the parents, disputed this settlement (or her husband did on her behalf).
It was at this point that Hubbard filed a paper with the court declaring that he knew of his own knowledge that Hiram and four of his siblings were born of the body of one Sarah Brinkley before the benefit of matrimony with said James Cozart. James and Sarah were born on 23 Aug 1796.
Hubbard was likely casting a question as to whether this sister was in fact Hiram's sister at all. And of course, whether she had any right to question the estate settlement.

General Notes for Child Anna Cossart
[mytree.FTW]
This Anna is the second of that name in this family ( A common practice when the first died young or just before the birth). In her father's will, she is referred to as being deceased and provision is made for her children, but her husband's name is not mentioned. No record can be found of her or her family in New York, Long Island or New Jersey.

[mytree.FTW]
Joost Cossart's name appears on a list of contributors toward the building fund of the neshanic Church. He seems to have left no will as no record bearing his name can be found at Trenton, NJ.
General Notes for Child Abraham Cossart
[mytree.FTW]
His will is dated 10-11-1764 and proven 9-5-1785 in New York. Abraham of Bushwick in 1761 came into possession of 60 acres of land that extended along the East River, from the old Brooklyn line to a little north of the present day Broadway and from the East River front to near Tenth Street, on which during the early days of 1667 a block house was erected as a resort for the scattered settlers in case hostility from the Indians, upon the high point of land which jutted into the East River about the foot of 4th Street, and which was known in olden times as the "Keike" of "Lookout". In 1693, Kip's executors sold the farm to Jacobus Bobin, a resident of Long Island, who was in until his death about 1741. It is afterward found in the possession of one Abraham Kershow who devised it to his sons Jacob and Martin, who were in possession as late as 1786, when they divided the farm, Jacob taking the northerly and Martin the Southerly halves.

General Notes (Wife)
[mytree.FTW]
Lea, a niece of Peter Stuyvesant at that time Dutch governor of New Amsterdam, now the city of New York. Governor Stuyvesant gave his niece and her husband a grant of land of 200 acres in what is now the heart of New york City.
Notes (Marriage)
[mytree.FTW]
Jaques, the younger, and his wife, Lydia moved to Frankenthal in Bavaria where their first three children were baptized. This couple was the first to bear the name of Cossart to come to the American Colonies, arriving at New Amesterdam (Now New York City) in the siling vessel "Pumerlander Kerck" on 14 October 1662. Both were members of the Reformed Dutch Church of New York City.
He was a mill owner and collector for the support of the Clergy and Soldiers of New Amsterdam. His home was located where New York Produce Exchange Building now stands on lower Broadway, New York City.
About 1673 he moved his family to Bushwick (now in Brooklyn), on Long Island, locating on a farm of about 40 acres. It was here that he died.
After 1685, the name of his wife appears on an old church list as "Lydia Willems, a widow of Jaques Cossart."
The tax lists show that he first aqcuired about ten acres of land which was subsequently increased to about 40 acres.
Records show that in 1683 he paid a total tax on personal property and real estate of 114 pounds. At this time, he had 2 horse, 5 cows, 1 hog, and 18 acres of land.
There seems to be no record of death for Lydia Willems, a widow of Jacques Cossart. her name does not appear on the census returns of 1698, she probably died before this date.
The church buildings have all disappeared and with them, most of the church books and documents. The burying grounds have disappeared likewise, and no one knows positively where he or his wife were buried.
A portrait of him is now hanging in the Astor Library in New York City.

General Notes for Child David Cossart I
[mytree.FTW]
David was a stone mason and engaged in the building and contracting trade in which he became quite wealthy for that period. The NYC tax records show that he was a property owner in both the north and south wards of the city, where he purchased and deeded property. Records also show that during the time David was living in New York City, he purchased lands extensively between the years 1700 and 1728, at and in the near vicinity of what is now Bound Brook, Somerset, NJ. About the year 1719, David Cosart came over from NYC, and purchased considerable property along the Raritan, NJ. His will was dated 1736 in Somerset Co, NJ an was probated in 1740.
