General Notes for Child Elijah Cottingham
"Mr. Elijah Cottingham died at his residence in No b l e s ville, Wednesday evening last, at six o'clock, in t h e 6 8 t h year of his age. The death of Mr. C., though n o t unex pe c ted, is sadly deplored by the entire communit y . He ha s b ee n ailing for some weeks and little hope h a s been ent erta ine d at any time of his recovery. The c om munity ha s los t a wo rthy citizen, and his loss will b e g reatly fel t. H e has be en identified with many of th e be st interest s of t he county , and his work as Enginee r an d Surveyor ha s exten ded to man y parts of the state . O f late years h e has turn ed his atte ntion largely t o th e survey of railr oads. Hi s work was alw ays of th e mos t satisfactory chara cter, an d hence his servi ces w ere al ways in demand. Bu t he has pa ssed away. His fr i ends an d family have the sy mpathy of th e community." (T h e "Nob lesville Independent, " Friday, Oct . 27, 1882, p . 5.)

General Notes for Child William Henry Feagin
William Henry Feagin, Sr. remains some what of a myst e r y . He was born in South Carolina, probably coming t o Ge or gia because of the Cherokee land that was sold or p ossib l y be cause he received a land grant. He owned slav es an d m ust have been a wealthy farmer. He mentions cotto n i n hi s will so it is assumed that he farmed at least th at c ro p . His will giving slaves to various children i s date d ri ght in the middle of the Civil War. Could it b e tha t he le ft to fight at age 59? The South at that tim e ha d a sever e shortage of soldiers and was taking olde r men a nd young b oys . In any case, he left his childre n who re mained in G eorgia, and disappeared. I have check ed Civi l War record s , Alabama records, etc., and have ye t to fin d a trace o f where he disappeared to. He is bel ieved t o be the son o f James Feagin because all of the ot her Feag in families tha t came to Jones County are account ed for a s are their child ren . James is the only person W illiam H . Feagin could b e a child of. William H. named hi s son Ja mes Feagin. In a ddition, William did have family -tie-typ e land transaction s with Michael James Feagin an d the Hamm ocks, both known ch ildren of James Feagin.
