Came from Holland about 1750 and settled near Philadelphia. Tradition tells me that he was married three times and brought up three sets of children, leaving at least some of the first two sets in Holland and that he and two of his sons were Indian fighters and also he fought in the Revolutionary War." Source: History of the Van Wye Family in 1902,byEnoc Wright Van Wye Source: Lineage of Frederick J Van Wye
Excerpts from "History of the Van Wye Family in 1902" ,byEnoc Wright Van Wye,pp11,12.
Abram Van Wye and my father, James Van Wye married sisters, Abram marring(sic) Charity Laird and James Van Wye marring Jane Laird, both families moved from Washington County, Pa. Trumbell County, Ohio at an early date--my father in 1832 and Abram in 1833. There were 12 children in each family--24 in all, pretty good for was it not? Our families lived in close and intimate terms with each otherfor many years--in fact there were never any disagreements between them to my knowledge.
VAN WYE FAMILY CHARACTERISTICS
The Van Wye people have some characteristics peculiar to themselves. We have always been people in the better middle class of society, always industrious and self supporting. I never knew of a pauper among my people, and never knew or heard of one being in the state prison. By occupation, mostly farmers, but there have been some very eminent teachers and doctors of note. We are usually temperate, but if a Van Wye drinks, he is sure to excess. (A Van Wye should never drink at all) The men among the older Van Wyes were noted for their strength, and the women for their beauty, virtue and kindness.
The first Van Wyes were of large build and great strength, fair complexion, and with blue eyes. By intermarrying with dark complexion and black eyed, a great many of our people have at thisday, dark eyes dark hair, and dark skin. But fornerly the hair was of light color. The Van Wyes are quick to anger and quick to resent a wrong or insult, but of a forgiving nature, not returning malice or hatred, but willing to reconcile to and with our fellow men, wishing to be a(t) peace with all. So may it be.
VAN WYE BLUE TEETH
There came in from somewhere what we call blue teeth which is pecular to our people, no other people have teeth like theese that I know of. I know not how they started or how they came about, but it must have been among our people at a very early date, for I can trace them back about six generations. They were among the Wrights descendants and my grandfathers descendents -- these people were all cousins, so it inherited to and by us before their time. It is a too(?) having no roots, but just sitting in the gum never aching but ready ti be pulled at any time. These peculiar teeth were never transmitted to posterity unless one or both parents had them. Lucy and I both had good white teeth, so our children are not afflicted with this peculiarity. But many of our brothers and sisters, having had these blue teeth, have transmitted them to their posterity... . --- Further info from Lower Smithfield Twp tax records, Monroe Co Pa; was Northampton Co Pa at the time the records were made.

General Notes (Wife)
[bobspu.ged]
Maria very likely was the daughter of Henry and Ariantje Keyser Countryman. Parents were married in Kingston, Ulster Co NY, where Henry had been a member of Capt. Daniel Brodhead s Foot Company of Ulster Co Militia in 1738. Henry was said by the book "Old Dansbury" to have come from the Esopus region of Ulster Co NY. They farmed on land owned by Dirck Van Vliet, west of Broadhead s Creek. Ariantje fled to Nazareth to escape the indian violence of 1755, and died in 1756.
The 1790 census of Ulster Co NY shows several Countryman names in Marbletown: Frederick 3-0-2, Matthew 1-0-3, Hendrick 1-2-1
Minisink records show that on 7 May 1751, Anna Maria Conterman, wife of Martin Feber, witnessed the baptism of Joseph Hoeper (Mich-Mack Records). The same records show the marriage 26 Dec 1753 between Peter Countyman born in Hooghduyst, lived in Palmyskill, and Catherine Hover who also was "born at the same place" and resided at Walpack; on 4 Feb of the same year, 1753, these 2 had witnessed the baptism of the son of John Michael Hover (Huber) in Walpack.
The tax records of Lower Smithfield Twp of Monroe Co PA, (the area likely now corresponding Middle Smithfield Twp) first shows Henry Countryman in 1764, but a petition as early as 1748 had his name on it, and a petition of 1761 did also. Henry was on tax records of 1773 and 1782; in 1796 there was a Henry J Countryman in Middle Smithfield Twp without land, and Henry Countryman with 30 acres.
Various records in Old Dansbury show that between 1750 and 1755, both a Henry and a William Countryman lived in Lower Smithfield Twp. The name of Jacob Countryman 1st shows up in 1768, so I suspect he may have been a son of either Henry or William.
The Journal of Enoch Wright Van Wye is the source of the statement that Maria died near DeForest OH. This paper also said that she was the 3rd wife of Arthur Van Wye.
There apparently is a record somewhere of a Mary Countryman divorcing her husband Adam Snook in Sussex Co NJ in Dec 1768.

Jane and Charles had a large family. The 1796 tax roll of Middle Smithfield Twp of Monroe Co Pa shows a Charles Van Why.
The Journal of Enoch Wright Van Wye says that Charles came to Washington Co PA in 1793 during the Whiskey Rebellion; he was discharged in Washington Co, remained there several years, and married Jane Cameron there. He later moved to Trumbull Co OH, lived along the Mahoning River until he died about 1855.
The book History of Northeast Ohio said that a Charles Van Wye was born in 1797 and came to Trumbull Co in 1806.
Tax records show that he moved from Howland Twp to Weathersfield Twp between 1825 and 1826.
Whitesell papers show a Charles Van Wye married a Margareta Mills at Sussex Co NJ 1 Feb 1798. Other Source: James Hannum, M.D. May 1999
General Notes for Child Arthur Van Wye Jr.
[bobspu.ged]
Mary and Arthur had 10 sons and four daughters, all lived to maturity except Benjamin. As a soldier in the 1793 Whiskey Rebellion, he was mustered out of the United States service in Washington Co. PA. Having relatives in that county, he stayed with them. Hw married and never returned to his old home. About 1800 he moved his family out of the wilderness to the frontier county of Trumbell, OH. After living there for eight of(sic) years, he moved back to Washington Co., PA, where he lived as a farmer. Source: History of the Van Wye Family in 1902,byEnoc Wright Van Wye
Jacob Earl and lames Earl were cousins of Arthur (Jr.) \Van Wye\ Source: History of the Van Wye Family in 1902,byEnoc Wright Van Wye,p3
The order of the children is my best guess based on information in the above source.
The Journal of Enoch Wright Van Wye says that he was born around Philadelphia on 25 Dec 1772, and died 10 Apr 1827 in Washington Co PA. He married in Washington Co PA Mary James born 12 Jul 1780. Arthur came to Washington Co PA in 1793 with his brother Charles, during the Whiskey Rebellion. He was mustered out there, and then stayed there with relatives. In 1800 he moved his family to Trumbull Co OH, lived there for 8-9 years, then moved back to Washington Co PA. He lived thee as a farmer until his death in 1827. The 1790 census of Lower Smithfield Twp of Monroe Co Pa shows Aaron and Henry Van Wey. The 1800 census of Peters Twp of Washington Co Pa page 83, shows Arthur Van Wy. The 1800 census of Hanover Twp of Luzerne Co Pa page 167 shows a Jacob Van Wye. His will was written in Nottingham Twp 23 Mar 1827, and probated 24 Jun 1828. Executors were Mary and Abraham Van Wy.
A source said that Arthur was a soldier in the War of 1812. An apparently different Arthur Van Wie was found on the list of taxables in Hanover Twp of Luzerne Co PA in 1796. Other Source: James Hannum, M.D. May 1999
