David lived all of his life in Wayne Co. Missouri. Born on the family farm on Lost Creek in a log house with a split log floor. He attended school at Lone Pine School near his home. In Feb. 1885, after his parents death, David sold the old homestead on Lost Creek which had been the Cozort home for half a century. At the same time he bought 156 acres on the St. Francis River. Ten years later he bought 152 acres adjoining. This was the Cozort home until 1942. The new farm had twenty acres cleared of timber in 1885. They lived at first in an old log house with a fireplace, near the river. Candles were used for lighting. Oxen and horses were used to work the land. Later David built a new house on higher ground where he lived until 1908. About one third of his farmwas river bottom land. The other two thirds was hill land and timber. In addition to field crops, he raised cattle, sheep, and hogs.. He was reported to be one of the largest hog raisers in Wayne Co. Missouri. David was elected Judge of Wayne Co from the second district in 1905 and served one term. His two sons were married in 1905 and he divided his farm between them. David then moved to Kime where he operated a general store and served as postmaster. This was three miles from the farm. He owened this land also, a small tract estimated to be about ten acres. David, usually called Dave or Davy, was a member of the Baptist Church and atgtended services regularly. He was widely known and respected in Wayne Co. After his wife Eliza died on July 17, 1924, he remarried. His second wife was a widow who had grown up in Wayne Co., maried, and lived at Birch Tree, Mo. Her maiden name was Sarah Osborn. After operating the store for doe over 25 years, David died at Kime, March 23. 1934. He had been in feeble health for several months. He is burried at Center Ridge Cemetery beside his first wife. His two daughters are burried in the se cemetery also.
General Notes for Child James Osa Cozort

James Osa Cozort was born May 15, 1881 on Lost Creek neer the village of Shook in Wayne Co. Mo. He is the son of David and Eliza Cozort. In 1885 the family moved to a farm on the east side of the St. Francis River, temn miles south of Greenville. Here he worked on his fathers farm and attended Center Ridge School which was three miles south of his home, graduating from the 8th grade. On Jan 14 1906 he married Delia Berry. The Cozort farm which was owned by David Cozort was divided by David between his two sons James, Osa and William Iverson about 1908. When the original farmhouse burned down, James hired a local carpenter, Los Clubb, to build a new house on his part of the land. His brother Iverson, who married Mary Arty Strickland in 1906, also built a house on his part of the farmat about the same time. The two brothers, known as "Oce" and "Ibe", lived on adjoining farms until 1922, when Iverson moved across river to a farm on Otter creek, adistane of about five miles. He sold his farfm in 1928 to Thomas Strickland. James and Delia lived together in their new house until Jan 1926, exept for two years, 1919 and 1920, when he rented his farm to a neighbor and moved to a house near Kime. Probably to enable him to devote full time to his livestock trading business which he did in addition to farming.. In these early years he was moderately prosperous and was widely known and respected in Wayne Co.. In 1921 when his older boys were old enough to work the farm, he moved his family back to the farm. The last six of their seven children were born on this farm. Abot 1923 he built and operated a flour mill in Kime in addition to his live stock trading and farming. This was not as successful and was the beginning of his financial difficulties. Trying to regain financial stability, he sold the timber from his farm and borrowed a few thousand dollars. There were accusations also that he had violated some laws in his business dealings. Because of these accusations and perhaps in part because of an unhappy marriage. He left home on Jan 1, 1926 and was not seen again by his family until the summer of 1942. Occasional letters from him indicate he traveled through several states, mostly in the south and east, for several years, moving frequently. He finally seteled in Chicago, where he lived for several years using an assumed name. He delivered coal for a living part of the time ad sometimes went into the country to do seasonal farm work. After he left home in 1926, creditors tried to take the farm but the court ruled against them. The live stock was all taken ecept two cows, but the farm, though mortgaged, was saved. Delia, with the help of the older children, continued to operate the farm. James Osa Cozart returned to the family in the summer of 1942, after the family moved to a new farm ten miles Sout of Poplar Bluff.at time until 1960 he returned and left again several times., spending part of his time in Chicago and part at home. At the age of 78 he was partially disabled by disorders of in his feet and legs and came to stay until his death in 1964. About a year before his death he went to live at the Assembly of God est Home in Poplar Bluff. He died while there Dec. 17, 1964 and was burried at Poplar Bluff Cemetery.
