Harriet Emmaline Acres was born August 24, 1856 at Gal e s b urg, Woodford County, Illinois, to John Wesley Acre s a n d Sa rah McCoy Acres. Both her father and grandfathe r we r e bor n in Ohio. "Hattie", as she was known, was mar rie d t o Frank lin Aaron Mason, an editor, who with Jame s H. G raha m, hi s s tepfather, established the Rogers Ne w Era, t he fi rst ne wspa per of Rogers, Benton County, Ar kansas.
Hattie and Frank were married February 20, 1873, at Har t v i lle, Missouri by the bride's father, John Wesley Acre s , w h o was pastor of the Methodist Church in Hartville.
Hattie and her husband came to Northwest Arkansa s i n t h e 1 870's and on to Rogers, Benton County, in 188 1 . Twel v e children were born to Frank and Hattie: Osca r , Claudia , E dgar , Wesley, Don, Pete, Nellie, Jessie, W il liam, Gert rude , Charles, and Francis. The first daught er , Claudia, d ied i n her second year and was buried at M elb ourne.
Frank died at age 46. Hattie never married agai n a n d w a s left to raise the children herself. She mad e a l iv in g designing and sewing clothes. She also taugh t musi c t o su pplement their meager income.
Mrs. Mason went to her death, not knowing for sure wh a t r e a lly happened to Oscar and Don. She heard from a r el iab l e so urce of Oscar's name having been listed i n a mag azin e , as l ost in the Yukon Gold Rush; but of Do n, she n eve r di d hear . Grandchildren have memories o f her speak in g of Li ttle Claudia and of Oscar and Don. S he would, o n o ccasion , gaze out the window, wishing sh e could see he r so ns com e walking down the road.
Mrs. Mason later bought a home in Bentonville, whe r e s h e d ied April 28, 1935. She was buried by her husb an d i n t he Centerton Cemetery. Mrs. Mason was always kno w n a s a tru e lady.
General Notes for Child Gertrude Belle Mason
Gertrude was 5 when her father died. She remembers at t e n d ing her father Frank's funeral. She said he was ex tr em e l y strict, but a good man. He was never mean but s tri c t . H e insisted on good table manners and would no t all o w c ompla ining at the table. She recalls nothing o f h i s p aren ts. Sh e attended Arsdale School.She loved t o pl ay gam es an d was e xtremely good at "ciphering and m ath". She tol d me s he was t he best student. She had ver y littl e to ea t afte r her fathe r died. She insisted o n gettin g an educa tion. H er mother wo rked as a seamstre ss and sh e taught Ge rtrude a nd Frankie t o sew. Her moth er had a h orse and bug gy. He r mother did n 't like he r daughters i n-law,being p artial t o her sons. G ertrud e said she trie d to treat he r daughter s in-law the sa m e as her sons. Sh e claims he r grandmothe r had a title a n d that sometime s he would inh erit a lot o f money. Sh e say s her grandmoth er was a "Va n Valkenburg".
She remember celebrating Christmas and the Christma s t r e e s had candles on it. She said they had very litt le f o r C hr istmas. Most gifts were hand made. She rememb ers c ar s wh e n they were first made. She remembers seein g airp lan es fi rs t in California. Quote from her: "Mone y doesn 't m ake th e l ady". She attended the Methodist c hurch an d lat er wen t t o the Baptist church . She met h er husban d a t a pie su ppe r (box supper). He outbid th e other youn g me n for her b ox a t auction. He courted he r and they go t mar ried. She sa ys al l of her children we re born at hom e. The y were delive red b y a midwife. Sh e lost one bab y who wa s blue-eyed an d fai r haired. Sh e says her husba nd was je alous of the ba by an d really d idn't want him . One day sh e noticed a blac k spo t on th e baby's head . It turned ou t to be a burst bl ood ve sse l . Orville c arried the bab y up the hill and th e bab y s tartedto cry . Orville took t he baby out to the wa ln ut tre e while Ge rtrude putthe mil k in the spring hous e . Orville c ried "h oney come here!" O rville had a probl em w ith fainting , s o she took thebaby a nd called the do ctor . Doctor Dunc a n told her that her ba by haddied.
She couldn't raise a child in the modern society. H e r h u s band was anapple orchard man. The spray is wha t ev entu al l y gave him throat cancer.They lost their hom e dur ing t h e de pressi on . They only leased theirproper ty ( 5 year l ea se) b ecause of losing their property. On e o f h r sonswe n t to Cal ifornia and asked her to come . Sh e sold her chic k ens, andl ivestock to go to Californ ia . Norma was the fi rs t to leav e forCalifornia, and la te r Gertrude and the ch ild ren. She b ought a Ford andwa s se en off by her sister s an d neighbors . A family frie nd an d Felixdrove the car.
Her children would work as children for a little ext r a m o n ey. When theycame to California , t hey worked pi ck in g or an ges - very much like in the"Grapes of Wrath " mov ie . Sh e al so worked picking passion fruit. She sa id he r ch ildre n neve r gave her a"particle" of trouble . The y b ough t anot her ca r after arriving.
Her sons went into the military - Myron went into t h e A r m y and served inthe Aleutians as a meat cutter. F el i x w a s a bomber pilot in thePacific. Gertrude and he r d au ght e r Norma worked in national defenseplants worki ng o n b uild in g airplanes and other weapons. They were t rue " Ann ie th e R iviters". When her sons were away duri ng th e war ,she s ave d all of the money that they sent ho me an d gav e it to t hem.
She claims that childhood was easier when she was li v i n g i n the 1890's.She claims that World War I caused m ot he r s t o work and that resulted inthe break-down of th e f ami ly . C hildren were not turned loose. They hadcho re s to d o . Ther e was more trust between parents and chi ldr en in h er mind.
She remembers Karen's mother and father first mee t i n g o n a bus. Herfirst impression of Jim is that he w a s n o t a ha ppy man but that his children met a lot tohi m . S h e says sh e never liked Jim Hibbert. She was hear t b roke n w hen they g ot married.
She remembers how Karen and Fred would get fresh br e a d a n d squish it andeat it and she would get upset abo u t i t. H ar vey Hutchins, her secondhusband thought the w or ld o f Nor m a and Karen. He played cards with Karen.
Gertrude worked as a nurse at the Park Alameda Hosp i t a l i n San Josebefore her retirement a n d was a memb e r o f t he F irst Baptist Church, theGolden Age Senior Ci ti zen s an d th e Happy Hour Club that donated wheelchair s t o tho se wh o nee ded them. She was also active as a m embe r of t heSa n Marco s Kitchen Band.
Her advice to her posterity: "Honesty is the only t h i n g i n this worldthat really counts . I t doesn't p a y t o st ory . I did this one time inmy life when I lie d a bou t goin g t o church" . It felt terrible lying tohe r mo ther . "Jus t tel l the truth".
Gertrude Mason Hutchins died about two years after I i n t e r viewed her inBenton County, Arkansas. She is buri e d i n t h e Oak Hill Memorial Park inEscondido, Californi a.
