Sylvester moved from his home in Ohio to Harper County, KS where he lived for a short time before taking a claim in Comanche Co. KS. Later he moved back to Harper Co. where he lived on a farm near Corwin, KS until the operning of the Cherokee Strip and he came to OK and took a claim near Aline. In 1916 he moved from the farm to Cherokee, OK. He joined the United Brethern Church, which he helped build.
