CHAPTER III South Fork Settled
Nutter Webb.--After the Murphys came Nutter Webb. He was a native of Harrison county, and th e first blacksmith in this vicinity. His old cabin stood on the south bank of the river jus t opposite the present site of Webb's (Hardman's) mill, and here he resided until he was lai d in the cemetery that bears his name, in August, 1833. A long line of his descendants stil l lay claim to Ritchie county soil.

He married Miss Anna Cunningham, daughter of Adam Cunningham, brother of Thomas, and was th e father of two sons and several daughters: Benjamin, whose history appears in a later chapte r, was one of the most prominent figures in the early history of this part of the county; Wil liam was also a pioneer, he having made the first settlement on the Elias Valentine farm; Mrs . Elizabeth Simms, Parkersburg; Mrs. Rebecca (John) Malone, Mrs. Margaret (Adam) Harris, Mrs . Rachel (William) Stuart, mother of Robert Stuart, of Iris, were four of the daughters, an d perhaps all of them.

The Webbs are of Indian fighting stock, they being descended from Jonas Webb, an early settle r of Harrison county, who is mentioned in "Border Warfare."

Adam Cunningham was another early settler in the Webb's mill vicinity, he having found a hom e on the Hoff, now the John S. Deem, farm. He was a brother of Thomas Cunningham, and here th e remainder of his life was spent, and in the Murphy graveyard he sleeps.

He was the father of twelve children, whose names in part are missing, but the following ar e among them: Adam, the grandfather of John Cunningham, the Washburn artist; Edward and Elija h, and Mrs. Rebecca Beard, Mrs. Drusilla Beard, Mrs. Rachel Nutter, Mrs. Hannah Harris and Mr s. Nutter Webb.

William Stuart-Contemporary with the settlements of the Murphy Brothers was that of William S tuart, senior, on the late John Byrd estate, near the old "State Ford," above Goff's. He wa s a typical son of "Old Erin," having been born, reared and educated in the city of Belfast , Ireland. Here he learned the trade of cabinet-maker and joiner; and here he was married t o Miss Martha Boyd, an English maiden, of Southampton; and from here they emigrated to Americ a in 1789, landing in the "City of Brotherly Love," where he worked at his trade, for a time , before purchasing land in Huntingdon county, Pennsylvania, on the banks of the "blue Juniat a river," below the then little village of Huntingdon. Here they remained but a brief time; a nd from here they came to Ritchie county, in 1801, and settled on the Byrd farm, where he die d on March 13, 1809. His wife died in 1834. Both sleep on their old homestead, in the burying '-ground that is now designated as the "Reeves graveyard." Their son, John, and daughter, Sar ah B., who was the victim of the first surgical operation in this county, also sleep here;

.NUTTER WEBB 2.JONAS WEBB JR 1.JONAS WEBB SR Nutter Webb was born ca 1765, the son of Jonas, Jr. and Elizabeth (Nutter) Webb. He marrie d (1) Anna Cunningham, the daughter of Adam Cunningham, on January 20, 1789, in Harrison Coun ty, VA. Nutter was one of the early settlers of Ritchie County, and he was the first blacksmi th in that vicinity. Anna (Cunningham) Nutter died 1825\1826 in Wood County, and Nutter the n married Mrs. Mary (Stafford) Rogers, on January 22, 1827, in Wood County, VA. Nutter died i n August, 1833 and is buried in the Webb Cemetary in Ritchie County, WV. Mary (Stafford) (Rog ers) Webb, appears in the 1850 census of Gilmer County, VA, living with a son from her firs t marriage.

Benjamin Webb, whose name refuses to be divorced from this mill, was born in Harrison county , in 1789, and with his father, Nutter Webb, came to the South fork of Hughes river, near th e year 1801.
He married Miss Martha Stuart, daughter of William Stuart, an early pioneer on this river, wh o was born at sea, on board the emigrant ship that brought her parents from Ireland to Americ a, in 1789; and soon after his marriage, he made the first settlement at the mill; and bein g called into service as a soldier of the war of 1812, his wife operated this mill during hi s absence.
He was one of the most prominent figures in the early history of this part of the county, bei ng a man of very high character, and of no small degree of ability.
He was sheriff of the county from 1845 to '47, and filled the office of magistrate for a ter m of forty years, during which time none of his decisions were ever reversed. He was, also, a n early merchant. Beside his wife, he sleeps in the cemetery that bears his family name.
He was the father of five daughters and one son: Mrs. Anna Dye, Mrs. Elizabeth Hyman, Mrs. Sa rah Rogers, Mrs. Louisa Hostetter, and Mrs. Drusilla Prince, and John Webb, who have all pass ed on, but his descendants in this county are quite numerous.

Benjamin Webb, the son of Nutter and Anna (Cunningham) Webb, was born November 5, 1789 i n Harrison County. He married Martha Stuart, the daughter of William Stuart, on Oct 5, 180 8 in Harrison County.
Benjamin was one of the prominent figures in the early history of Ritchie County. Benjami n was the owner and operator of a gristmill, known as Webb's Mill, located in Ritchie County . It was one of the first mills in the area being in existence before 1812. While Benjami n served in the War of 1812, his wife operated the mill in his absence. He also served as sh eriff from 1845-1847, and then filled the office of magistrate for a term of forty years.
Benjamin died May 27, 1879. He and his wife are buried in Ritchie County, WV.

CHAPTER III South Fork Settled
John Malone married Miss Rebecca Webb, sister of Benjamin Webb, and was the first settler o n the E. R. Tibbs farm, at Goff's. He went from here to Bull creek, where some of his descend ants still live.
James Malone, junior, married Miss Susan Wolfe, daughter of Peter, and succeeded his father o n the Kennedy farm. He removed from there, early in the forties, to the farm that is now desi gnated as the William Flannagan homestead, near Hannahdale, and here he passed from earth, i n the early sixties, and in the Harrisville cemetery, beside his wife, he sleeps.
He figured prominently in the early history of the county, as justice of the peace and as rep resentative in the legislature at Richmond.
Mrs. J. M. Brown, of Hannahdale, is the granddaughter of this pioneer.
He was the father of Alfred Malone, a lay minister of the M. E. church, who sleeps in Kansas ; James (the III), who died in the Union cause; Francis M., who rests at Lima, Ohio; the lat e Samuel, of Nebraska; and Osbourne, who died at Weston; Fannie became Mrs. Broadwater, of Ha nnahdale; Rebecca, Mrs. Jacob Trainer, of Riddel's chapel; Mary Jane, Mrs. William Maley, o f the same vicinity; Elizabeth was the late Mrs. John Clutter, and Eliza, Mrs. Harvey Clutter , of Iowa; Martha married and died in St. Louis, Missouri; and Sarah, the only survivor of th e family, is Mrs. Clutter, of Pittsburg, Kansas.
Among the great-grandchildren of James Malone, senior. who are citizens of this part of the c ounty, are C. J. Valentine, of Fonsoville; S. A. Wyer, of Auburn; J. B. Valentine, of Macfarl an; and not a few of the Wyers of Gilmer county
