George resided for some time in Boston, but late i n l i f e o n the ancestral homestead, Main St., below "Pear Tree Hill" , w h e r e the first Matthew and his wife Nazareth lived. On his death the place was apparently deserted and allowed to go to ru i n . A b out 1890, it was bought at auction by a Dr. Robbins and h i s w i f e, after having remained in the possession of the fami l y f o r 2 50 years. They pulled down the old homestead and rebu i l t i t i n a new situation, leaving the old threshold as an historical landmark. They reclaimed the land and improved th e f a r m ( See "Rescue of an Old Place", by Mrs. Robbins.) According to Reference "(The old house was demolished in 1886.)"

Joseph was a printer in Boston and succeeded William Bi g l o w, M.A., in editing (The Village Messenger), of Amherst, N.H., about 1796-1800. This publication continued to Dec. , 1 8 0 1 , and was succeeded in 1803 by (The Farmers Cabinet) (Coll . M a s s . Hist Soc., Vol II). He established this newspaper. He re m o v e d to Baltimore in 1809, where he established himself as a bo o k s e ller. He there served in the Legislature and City Government, and aided in the establishment of the first Public Scho o l i n t h at city - as also in 1816 of the Savings Bank of Baltimore, of which he was President for 25 years until his death.
