Jacob was a farmer, soldier, and a merchant. He removed with his parents to Henry County, IA, where he met and married his wife, Hetty.
At the outbreak of the civil war, Jacob was farming in Benton or Hickory County, MO. He immediately enlisted in Governor Phelps 100 day company. At the expiration of this service, he returned to Hickory County where he helped recruit Company I, 8th Missouri State Militia Cavalry. He was enlisted as its first Sergeant on 31 Mar 1862 and on 27 Apr 1863 was promoted to Captain of his troop for distinguished service. He remained in command of this company until it was mustered out July1865.
Jacob saw some very hard service in both Missouri and Arkansas, where he did scouting duty. In Jan 1864, a battalion of the 8th Missouri Cavalry marched from Ozark, MO to Yeliville, AR and while crossing White River near Forsyth, MO, Jacob's horse became frightened at the moving ice in the river. The horse reared and fell with Jacob still on him. Jacob's right leg and hip were severely injured which caused him a permanent limp. This injury was was the cause of his death in later years.
After Jacob was released from the army, he returned to Hickory County and resumed farming for a few years. About 1870, he removed toAdams County, Indiana where he engaged in the lumber and milling business for six or eight years then removed to Fulton County, IL where he engaged in the same business in addition to farming. In 1884 he removed to Stoddard County, MO where he engaged in farming, cock raising, and the mercantile business.
Jacob is buried in the cemetery at Bloomfield, MO. The government furnished his grave and marked his last resting place with a military headstone.
