Glouceste r , m a r ried Emeline Abitot, daughter and heiress of Urs o d e Ab it o t, Constable of the castle of Worcester and h ered itar y sh er iff of Worcestershire (who was brother o f Robe rt l e Desp enc er, steward to the Conqueror). He wa s inves ted w ith tha t sh eriffalty by King Henry I., an d obtaine d a gra nt fro m the s ame monarch (to whom he wa s a stewar d) of al l the l ands bel onging to Roger de Wor cester, wit h a confi rmatio n of certai n lands given to h im by Adelis e, widow o f his f ather-in-law , the said Urs o de Abitot.
This marriage happened after the Conquest; for at th a t t i m e the General Survey was made, the name of Beauch am p i s n o t once mentioned as lord of any manor in Engla nd . Bu t Ur s o de Abitot had manors almost in very part o f i t. H e bei n g hereditary sheriff, his office was to ke ep t his p art o f t he new-conquered kingdom in subjection ; i t was ne cessar y, t herefore, that his power should b e ver y great , to enab le hi m to withstand any neighborin g prin ce incli ned to reb el, an d that he should have inf luenc e in ever y part of th e county .
