General Notes (Husband)
Before 1699 when treasury rights were instated, la n d w a s d eeded in the form of head bounties granted to p eo pl e wh o br ought new immigrants to the colonies. One o f t hes e ind ividu als who obtained land by bringing in se ttle rs w as Cap tain W illiam Randolph. A relative of Thom as Je ffers on ,Ran dolph a massed a hugh estate known as T uckaho e. Ran dolph an d other s like him to obtain more la nd ofte n mad e several p atents c laiming the same individ ual. On e of th e individual s claime d several times was J ohn Witt . The fi rst patent th at John W itt was include d in was fo r 623 acr es in Charle s City Count y, Bristol l Parish. I t was for la nd on the sou th side of th e Appo mattox River , beginning a t Hugh Lee's , to the Great M ea dow, up the s wamp, and wa s dated 20 Nove mber 1682. Anot h er, submitte d by Thomas C ock Sr., was fo r 816 acres i n Henr ico Count y on the sout h side of the Chi ckahominy . This wa s date d 20 October 168 9. John Witt is f ound i n another cla i m of William Randol ph's recorded on 2 5 Oc tober 1695. Th i s was for 2, 926 acre s in Charles City C o unty, Wynoake P aris h, on the south si de of the James Riv e r. These thre e land p atents have som e common names bet wee n the liste d immigrants , making it l ikely that the J ohn Wi tt liste d is one and th e same.
John Witt was married to Ann Daux, daughter of W a l t e r Daux. Walter, the son of a London merchant, Rich a r d Da ux , is first found in Virginia in 1637 when he i s l is te d o n a patent of land near Herring and Oldman's Cree k s i n Charl es City County. A series of court entr ies f ro m th e1670' s concerning a dispute between orphan s of Wa lte r Dau x estab lishes John Witt as the husband o f Ann. I n Fe bruar y 168 7 a work order was issued to clea r and la y a ro ad fro m th e Chickahominy down towards th e JamesRiv er. Th is roa d wa s connected to the main roa d near Joh n Witt's l and.
By 1715 both of the Witt brothers, John and Will i a m , m oved a fewmiles west to Henrico County. On 13 Se pt em be r 17 15 the brothers bought300 acres from Charle s Hu dso n f or 1 0 pounds. The land was on a fork ofTucka hoe Cr eek , bou nde d by the southern branch and John Bra dley' s land .The W itt s may have already been establishe d her e befor e 1715 a s th e landnoted in the patents subm itte d by Willi am Randol ph wa s in this area. Also, in 169 5, Jo hn Witt ha d a court s uit i n Henrico County.
According to the tradition noted in the William s b o o k , John Witt Jr.had a wife named Lavina. A will d at e d 5 A ug ust 1730, in Charles City County, leaves th a t i n doubt . Jo hn Rogers of Westover Parish left lives to ck a nd item s to hi s daughter Ann, wife of John Witt . Jo hn Wi tt and h is two s ons - John Jr and William (Gui llaum e), na tives o f France, m igrated to Virginia and se ttle d first i n Charle s City Count y in the late1600's . In la ter year s they wer e found in sev eral other coun ties -Goo chland, A mherst, Pow hatan, Albemarl e, to menti on a few . They als o were among t he founders of M anakin , Va. A d escendant o f William Wit t formed anew Chapt e r of the Hug uenot Societ y called "Foun ders of Manakin."
General Notes for Child Guillaume (William) Witt II
Faulty rationale begets faulty Tradition. And that ' s w h a t happened here. However sincere, the faulty WIT T T radi t io n can be traced back to "Year Book No. 1," da te d 1924 , o f t he Huguenot Society of the Founders of Ma nak in in t he C olon y of Virginia.
THE OLD WITT TRADITION WAS FLAWED IN THREE MAIN AREAS
1. William Witt d1754 was not the immigrant but so n o f J o h n Witt and wife Ann Daux; and William Witt wa s no t bo r n i n Southern France but in Charles City CoV A (in o rde r t o b e with his parents).
2. John Witt was the immigrant and he was import e d a s a " h eadright" (plantation owner paid his way) fr o m Engl and, n o t France (per Land Patent records).
3. Five sons attributed to William Witt d1754 (Lewis , C h a r les, William, Abner, and David) were not his son s bu t h i s gr andsons.
a. Lewis & Charles were sons of Benj. Witt d1774 of Bu c k i n gham CoVA b. William, Abner, and David were sons o f J o h n Wi tt d1782 of Amherst CoVA
QUOTING FROM FAULTY RATIONALE IN HUGUENOT BOOK NO. 1
"In 1756, Land Deed of Prince Edward Co., VA of Benj a m i n W itt (son of William d1754), have as witnesses th e n am e s o f his brothers, Charles Witt and Lewis Witt."
"And in 1781, Amherst Co., will of John Witt Sr. ( s o n o f W illiam d1754), his brothers William Witt Jr., A bn e r Wit t, a nd David Witt are witnesses
The first known entry for William Witt (d1754) and h i s b r o ther John Witt (d ca 1751) was in 1715, when the y b oug h t (j ointly) 300 acres (known as Young Men's Adve ntur e) f ro m Cha rles Hudson in Henrico Co (that part no w Gooc hlan d Co ). Th e deed said that the WITT brothers w ere fro m Cha rle s City C oVA, the county of residence fo r the imm igran t Joh n Wit t & wife Ann Daux per Charles C ity Count y cour t recor ds.
No reason to believe that William Witt (d1754) and h i s b r o ther John Witt, Jr (d before 1751) came from Engl an d.
Every reason to believe that they were sons of immig r a n t J ohn Witt/Whitt and Ann Daux who were married aft e r 16 7 0 i n Charles City CoVA, per court records. Furthe r , impo rt atio n of John Witt to the Charles City Count y ar ea supp ort ed b y Land Patents.

By tradition, this Richard Witt/Whitt was named Rich a r d O n ey Witt. By tradition, he was left on doorstep o f W il lia m W itt D1754 of Charles City, Goochland and Alb emar l e coun ties , VA. General Notes (Husband)

"In 1756, Land Deed of Prince Edward Co., VA of Benj a m i n W itt (son of William d1754), have as witnesses th e n am e s o f his brothers, Charles Witt and Lewis Witt."
"And in 1781, Amherst Co., will of John Witt Sr. ( s o n o f W illiam d1754), his brothers William Witt Jr., A bn e r Wit t, a nd David Witt are witnesses
The first known entry for William Witt (d1754) and h i s b r o ther John Witt (d ca 1751) was in 1715, when the y b oug h t (j ointly) 300 acres (known as Young Men's Adve ntur e) f ro m Cha rles Hudson in Henrico Co (that part no w Gooc hlan d Co ). Th e deed said that the WITT brothers w ere fro m Cha rle s City C oVA, the county of residence fo r the imm igran t Joh n Wit t & wife Ann Daux per Charles C ity Count y cour t recor ds.

General Notes for Child Sarah Witt
Sarah Witt may have been born in France, but I fi n d t h a t unlikely and probably based on her French Hugue no t an c es try. Her marriage date is variable with many p eop le se tt lin g for 1705. I find that unlikely based o n he r age . He r ma rriage date is therefore careful conj ectur e.
