He was a farmer at Powellton, IL, but retired in Los Angeles, CA, living to be over 92, and writing many letters to relatives and friends up to the end. Had no children.
From the Fort Madison, Iowa, "Democrat", November 2, 1901: "The one and one-half story frame house, north of Powellton, known as the ol BEN RITER house, owned by J. D. Riter, and occupied by Wm. Walker and family, was destroyed by fire Monday night. Almost all of the contents of the building were saved."[Downing.ged]
