General Notes (Wife)
1 NAME de /Beauharnais/ 1 UPDA 2 DATE 1804 2 PLAC Acceded:
JOSEPHINE (1763-1814) was the beloved wife of Napoleon Bonaparte, one of French history's most important figures. She was the daughter of a French planter in Martinique, in the West Indies. She married Vicomte Alexandre de Beauharnais when she was about 17. They had a son, Eugene, and a daughter, Hortense. The vicomte was one of the last victims of the Reign of Terror of the French Revolution. Josephine was in prison for a time and narrowly escaped being guillotined.
Josephine soon became friendly with Vicomte de Barras, a government leader. Through his influence, she got back some of her husband's property, and she became a leader in Paris society. It was at Barras' home that Josephine met Napoleon. He immediately fell in love with her, and they were married in 1796.
Her Marriage. Josephine was a beautiful woman. She was graceful and stately in her public appearances, which made her an asset to Napoleon in his climb to power. But her marriage to Napoleon made her a subject of gossip. It was often reported that she had love affairs while Napoleon was absent during his military campaigns. Such reports frequently reached Napoleon and made him angry. Josephine was also an intelligent woman and may have given Napoleon much advice.
Napoleon and Josephine had no children. By 1809, Napoleon was afraid that he might die without a son, and that his empire would crumble. He finally decided he would have to divorce Josephine. He told her of his decision, as gently as he could. She promised never to doubt his love. She retired with imperial honors to Malmaison, the small estate near Paris which Napoleon had bought for her.
Her Last Years. Napoleon married Marie Louise of Austria in 1810. A year later, a son was born to them (see MARIE LOUISE; NAPOLEON II). Josephine heard the cannon shots announcing the birth, and Napoleon sent her a special message. He once brought his son to Malmaison, without Marie Louise's knowledge. Josephine had begged to see him.
Marie Louise was not allowed to go with Napoleon to exile at Elba. Josephine wrote a letter to Napoleon and asked permission to join him. He was forced to write back that it was impossible. But before his letter arrived, Josephine had died.

General Notes (Husband)
Of this noble Norman we have considerable informatio n a f f o rded us by Orderic, in consequence of his being o n e o f t h e founders of the Abbey of Ouche, better know n a s tha t o f S t. Evroult, in which the historian was pr ofes se d a mon k b y the venerable Abbot Mainer, in the el event h y ear of h is a ge, by the name of Vitalis (Vital) , and i n wh ich monas ter y he lived fifty-six years.
From him we learn that Hugh de Grentmesnil was on e o f t h e s ons of a Robert de Grentmesnil (now known a s Gran dmes ni l, i n the arrondissement of Lisieux) by Haw ise d e Giroi e , whic h Robert was mortally wounded in th e battl e betwe e n Roger d e Toeni and Roger de Beaumont , alread y mentione d , vol. i. , pp. 19, 217.
He fought on the side of De Toeni, and being carrie d o f f t h e field, lingered for three weeks, and then die d a n d wa s in terred without the Church of St. Mary at No rre i , betwe en Gr andmesnil and Falaise. His issue by Haw is e d e Giroi e was tw o sons, Robert and Hugh, between wh o m he d ivided h is proper ty.
Robert became a monk in the abbey he had assisted to re - e d i fy. Hugh, who was "eminent for his skill and courag e , " wa s , through the machinations of Mabel de Montgomer i , b anish e d by Duke William without any real cause of o ff enc e in 10 58 , but recalled from exile in 1063, and in tru ste d with th e c ustody of the Castle of Neufmarché-e n-Lio ns , from whic h th e Duke, on equally slight grounds , ha d exp elled Geoffr ey d e Neufmarché, the rightful he ir; an d nobl y forgetful o f pas t injustice, did the vali ant Hug h justi fy the trust r epose d in him, restoring i n the cou rse o f a year the distu rbed d istrict to perfec t tranquil lity . We next find him am ongst t he principa l combatant s in th e great battle, but h e surel y canno t be the perso n descri bed by Wace as "a vass al of Gr and mesnil, " who w as in grea t peril during the acti on in co n sequence of hi s horse bec oming masterless throug h th e break ing of hi s bridle-rei n in leaping over a bush . H e was nea r fallin g, and the En glish perceiving his fli g ht ran toward s hi m with their lo ng axes, but the hors e tak ing fright, a n d wheeling sudden ly round, bore hi s rider sa fely back i nt o the ranks of th e Normans. Hug h was certainl y a vassa l o f the Duke of Nor mandy, bu t a baron of his rep utatio n and p ower would scar cely b e so described by Wace . Mons . Le Prévo st, however , app ears by his note on the pa ssag e to conside r it refer s t o Hugh himself, and Mr. Tayl o r follows him wit hout com m ent. It may perhaps be argue d th at there is nothin g i n t he incident itself to give i t suff icient importanc e t o b e recorded by the poet unles s the pe rson endanger ed wa s s ome one of consequence. A t all events , Hugh d e Grentmesn i l was certainly presen t at Senlac, an d no d oubt did his d e voir, as he was won t to do; for in 10 6 7 we find him on e o f the principal pe rsons joined with W i lliam Fitz Osber n an d Bishop Odo i n the government o f Engl and, during th e King' s absence i n Normandy, and b esides th e donation o f one hund red mano rs in this count ry, sixty-fi ve of whic h were in Lei ceste rshire, he wa s appointed Visco unt (i.e. , sheriff) of t ha t county an d Governor of Hampshi re.
He was one of the Norman nobles who interceded with t h e C o n queror in favour of Robert Court-heuse, and effec t e d a te mp orary reconciliation. On the accession of Ruf u s h e espou se d the cause of the young duke; but like ma n y oth ers of h i s rank and country, weary of his vacilla ti ons, a nd disgus te d by his general conduct, he ultimat el y took p art agains t h im.
In 1090 we find him in Normandy, in his old age, strenu o u s l y opposing the aggressions of the detestable Robe r t d e Be le sme, who had erected strongholds at Fourche s an d a t La C one be, on the river Orme, whence he made i nroad s o n his ne ighb ours, and harried all the country r ound.
Hugh de Grentmesnil and Richard de Courci, whose doma i n s l a y nearest to him, and most exposed to his depreda ti on s, w er e the first to take arms against him. Both th es e kn ight s we re now grey-headed, but their spirit wa s unb roken , an d thei r intimate connection strengthene d the bo nd o f frien dship b etween them, Richard de Courc i, the so n o f Richard , havin g married Rohesia, daughte r of Hugh . Matt hew, Coun t of Beau mont-sur-l'Oise, broth er-in-la w of Hugh , Willia m de Warren , second Earl of Su rrey, wit h many oth er knight s, hastene d to their suppor t, eager t o exhibit t heir prowe ss in suc h a field. Theo bald, son o f Walter d e Breteuil, c alled "th e White Knig ht," becaus e his stee d and appointmen ts were al l white , and his bro ther-in-arm s Guy, called "th e Red Knigh t " for a simila r reason, wer e slain in some o f these enco un ters; but Ro bert de Belesm e finding that h e was unabl e to c ope alon e with his brav e and resolute opp onents , prevaile d on th e Duke of Norman dy, by humble suppl ica tions and spec iou s promises, to mar ch to his assistanc e . In the mont h o f January, 1091, th e Duke accordingl y lai d siege to C ourci- sur-Dive; but unw illing to com e to extre mities wit h his gre at nobles, too k no measure s for closel y investi ng the place . De Belesme , however , used every mea ns by f orce and strata gem to ge t posses sion of the castle . He c aused a huge machi ne, cal le d a belfry (berfradum), b ein g a wooden tower conta ini n g a number of stages or floor s , and moving on wheel s , t o be constructed and rolled u p t o the castle walls , fi lle d with soldiers, who could l eap f rom it on to th e batt lemen ts, or fight hand to han d with t he defenders ; but th e devic e proved in vain, fo r as ofte n as he att empted a n assault , a powerful forc e from Grentm esnil ha stened t o the rescue , and drew hi m off from the at tack.
In one of these conflicts the garrison during a ral l y t o o k prisoners William, son of Henry de Ferrers (wh o f oug h t a t Hastings), and William de Rupière, whose r ansom s we r e a g reat assistance to the besieged; but, o n the o the r ha nd, th e besiegers captured lvo, one of th e sons o f Hu gh d e Grentm esnil and Richard Fitz Gilber t de Clare , th e latte r of who m did not long survive th e horrors o f th e dungeo n to whic h De Belesme consigne d him.
An oven had been built outside the fortifications, be t w e e n the castle gate and De Belesme's belfry, and the r e t h e ba ker had to bake the bread for the use of the g ar riso n , th e siege having been begun so suddenly that t h e inhab it ant s of Courci had no time to construct one w it hin th e wal ls . The thickest of the fight was therefor e o ften ar ound t hi s oven, for the men of Courci stood i n ar ms to de fend th ei r bread while De Belesme's followe rs en deavoure d to carr y i t off. This led occasionally t o a ge neral eng agement, i n wh ich there was much slaught er, wit hout speci al advantag e t o either side; but in on e of the m, the besi egers havin g rep ulsed their assailan ts, set f ire to the b elfry, and s ucceed ed in destroyin g it.
Hugh de Grentmesnil, who did not bear arms himself, o n a c c o unt of his advanced age, was much distressed by t he l o n g co ntinuance of the siege, and in consequence se nt t h e fo llowi ng message to the Duke of Normandy: "I lo ng se rv ed yo ur fat her and grandfather, and suffered muc h in t hei r serv ice ; I have also always been loyal to yo u. Wha t hav e I don e? I n what have I offended you? How h ave I m erite d at you r hand s this hostility? I openly ac knowledg e yo u as my lie ge lord , and on that account wil l not app ear i n arms again st you ; but I offer you two h undred liv res t o withdraw whe n it ma y suit your pleasur e for one s ingl e day, that I ma y fight R obert de Belesm e!" Orderi c has n ot acquainted u s with the r eply of Cou rt-heuse t o this ma nly appeal of th e chivalric o ld warr ior, who, a s he menti ons his service t o the Duke's g ran dfather, cou ld not at t his period have be en much unde r e ighty.
At all events, neither the letter nor the mediation o f G e r r ard, Bishop of Séez, who took up his abode at th e Con ve n t o f Dive during the siege, in the hope of rest orin g pea c e i n his diocese, had any effect upon eithe r the D uke o r R ober t de Belesme; but the arrival of Kin g Willia m (Ruf us ) wit h a great fleet caused them to dec amp wit h all has t e and di sband their forces, each man r eturnin g to his o w n home.
Three years afterwards, Hugh de Grentmesnil was aga i n i n E n gland, and worn out with age and infirmity, fin di ng h is e n d approaching, assumed, in accordance with t h e commo n pra ct ice of the period, the habit of a monk , an d expire d si x day s after he had taken to his bed, 2 2nd o f Februar y, 10 94, ac cording to our present calcula tion , and presum ably i n the c ity of Leicester.
His body, preserved in salt and sewn up in the hi d e o f a n o x, was conveyed to Normandy by two monks of S t . Evr oult , na med Bernard and David, and honourably bur ie d by t he Ab bot R oger on the south side of the Chapte r Ho use, ne ar th e tom b of Abbot Mainer.
Arnold de Tillieul, his nephew, caused a marble s l a b t o b e placed over his grave, for which Orderic tel l s u s h e hims elf furnished the Latin epitaph in heroi c ve rse , wit h whic h he obliges his readers; but as it i s sim pl y laudat ory I w ill not inflict it on mine, obser ving o nl y that i t is a rel ief to feel that in this inst ance th e p raise app ears to hav e been truly deserved, a s I fin d noth ing record ed of Hugh d e Grentmesnil that d oes no t redoun d to his cre dit.
In his youth we are told he married a very beautifu l l a d y , Adeliza, daughter of lvo, Count of Beaumont-sur -l'O is e , b y his first wife Judith, with whom he had Bro kesbo urn e , i n Herefordshire, and three lordships in War wicksh ire.
She died at Rouen seven years before her husband, a n d w a s b uried in the Chapter House of St. Evroult, (A c ha rte r o f he r son lvo indicates that she was buried a t Ber mond sey. ) hav ing had issue by him five sons and a s man y daugh ter s namel y, Robert, William, Hugh, lvo, a nd Aub rey; Ade line , Hawise , Rohais, Matilda, and Agne s none o f whom exc ept R obert liv ed to an advanced age , and he, a lthough thr ice ma rried, die d without issue i n 1136. Hug h died young . Willia m, lvo, an d Aubrey forfe ited their r eputation fo r braver y by their di shonourabl e and ludicro us escape fro m Antioch , which obtain ed fo r them the nam e of ropedancer s. With th e exception o f H awise, who die d unmarried, hi s daughters b ecame the wiv e s of noble kni ghts: Adeline, o f Roger d'lvri , Rohais , of Ro bert de Cou rci, Matilda, o f Hugh de Montpin con , and Agnes , of Willi am de Say.
