General Notes (Wife)
1 NAME Gwladus DDU "the/Dark"/
Gwladus DDU (the Dark-eyed) widow of Reginald de Braose Source differ as to wether Joan or Tanwystyl is Gwladus' mother. Llywelyn did not marry Joan until 1205 at the EARLIEST, or 1206, if you believe more detailed sources. Llywelyn did not receive the final (third) letter from the Pope declaring his betrothal to the daughter of the King of Man to be void until 1205. Giving a year for conception and birth, if one assumed Gwladys were daughter of Joan, she could not have been born earlier than 1206 or 1207. If she were older than eight or nine years old in 1215, she could not have been daughter of Joan. As I stated before, the marriage to Reginald de Braose in 1215 was one of political expediency, and not one where the were waiting for the girl to come of age (so to speak). You'd be relying heavily on the coincidence that Gwladys happened to be in that very narrow range between seven (before which age she could not even have been betrothed) and eight, or nine. Then we have Joan's son and heir David being born BY 1208 (gave homage in 1229). If Joan were indeed married in 1206, and David born in 1208 (he cannot have been born later if the law was followed), that is an awfully tight squeeze to put Gwladys's coincidental birth there.
I still think the claim that Gwladys was daughter of Joan, and that she therefore MUST have been born in 1207--not before, not after--is doubtful.

In answer to your question, there was a clear and unambigious statement that Gladys Dhu was the daughter of Llywelyn and Joan in the chronicle of Adam of Usk. Adam knew the Mortimer family and presumably had access to their archives. While Adam is a late date witness and not altogether reliable, he is rather emphatic that Gladys was Joan's daughter.
As for another late date testimony of the Mortimer family's descent from Llywelyn, I find the Visitation of the North prepared c. 1480-1500 states that "Roger [recte Ralph] Mortemer duxit Gladiswiscam filiam principis Wallie." [Reference: Surtees Society, vol. 144, published 1930, pg. 3.
Presumably the point of reciting the extended Mortimer pedigree back to Prince Llywelyn is because the English descendants of the Mortimer family c. 1480-1500 believed that Gladys was the legitimate daughter of Prince Llywelyn, by his wife, Joan.
Adam of Usk and the Visitation of the North aside, I believe the best evidence of Gladys Dhu's parentage is the fact that Gladys' father, Llywelyn, released two castles which he had in free marriage with his wife, Joan, to Gladys' husband, Ralph de Mortimer. I posted a transcript of Llywelyn's charter to Ralph de Mortimer on the newsgroup. If you need help finding the transcript, please let me know.
Best always, Douglas Richardson, Salt Lake City, Utah E-mail: royalancestry@msn.com
If I read this right are you saying that as there was an ongoing dispute with the Mortimers over Knighton and Norton, Llywelyn may have decided to cut his losses and give away the properties with Gwladys. The pragmatic value of such an act would have overridden the issue of her maternity. It is my understanding that legally Llywellyn could have given the properties away with the consent of Joan, anyway.
Also in 1229, Gwladys Dhu accompanied her brother as widow of Reginald de Braose for the purpose of negotiations in London for her to become bride of Ralph Mortimer? If this is the case, we cannot draw any conclusions about her maternity from this event.
Cheers

Two major pieces of evidence point to Joan as being Gladys' mother.
[GMacGen@aol.com] Giles tells us that Peter C. Bartrum's _Welsh Genealogies_ [table Gruffudd ap Cynan 4] gives the mother of Gwladys Ddu as Tangwystl. Here is what is shown in Peter C. Bartrum's Welsh Genealogies, page 446, Gruffudd ap Cynan 4:

1 UPDA 2 DATE BEF 1160 2 PLAC Acceded: Earl of Ferrieres.
There is substantial confusion over his name. See The Complete Peerage V4.p193 for an account. Personally, I feel there could have been two brothers, William and Robert. Robert being the Earl and when he died at Acre his nephew William son of his brother William suceeded, but no documents support this theory either!

General Notes for Child Reginald De Braose
Llywelyn took full advantage of the political turm o i l i n E ngland. He cemented an alliance with Reginal d d e Br aos e i n 1215 to keep the Welsh de Braose territo rie s ou t of k in g John's hands. Reginald married Llywely n' s daug hter, G wla dus Ddu and owed tenure of his land t o t he prin ce. (Reg inal d's first wife was Grace Briwere.)
The rebel barons called upon Philip of France to se n d h i s s on Louis to be their king. Louis arrived at Tha ne t o n M ay 1 4, 1216 with a large army. On May 26 king J oh n wro te f rom B ramber to Reginald de Braose offering h i m all th e lan ds onc e held by his father William. Joh n al so sent m en t o bring R eginald safely to him. Two da ys la ter the ki ng th ought bett er than to expect Reginal d to c ome to hi m and se nt a part y to negotiate peace te rms: th ey failed.
Soon John was on the run. He sent urgent instructio n s f o r K nepp's valuables to be moved safely to Brambe r ca stl e b ut h is southern strongholds, including Brambe r, fe ll t o Lo uis . In his flight, the king took an arm y to He refor d an d sum moned Reginald de Braose and the p rinces o f Wale s t o join h im in a pact of peace. He wa s humiliate d in hi s ef forts an d burned Hay and Radnor c astles i n a continui ng pu rsuit o f Reginald, despite th e danger p osed by the F renc h invasion.
After an apparently hospitable banquet at Kings Lyn n , J o h n fell seriously ill. He was travelling with hi s en tir e r oy al baggage but lost it all in the quicksand s o f th e Wash . W hen he died at Newark on October 18, 12 16 , serva nts str ippe d him of his few remaining persona l po ssession s. Th e las t item recorded on John's paten t rol l was a gi ft of l and i n the royal forest of Aconbu ry, ne ar Holme La cy. It w as fo r Margaret de Lacy, daugh ter o f William an d Maud de B raose , so that she could es tablis h an Augustin ian conven t and ch antry chapel in me mory o f her mother, f ather and b rother. S he may have bu ried he r mother there . Her brothe r William wa s most lik ely buri ed at Sele prio ry, in Uppe r Beeding.
It was not until Louis was defeated and Henry III' s r e i g n was established in 1217 that Reginald swore hom ag e t o t h e crown. Llywelyn was incensed by this seemin g be tray al a n d laid siege to Reginald's castle at Breco n. Rh ys an d Owa in , princes of Deheubarth, allies of Lly wely n and ne phew s o f Reginald, took the town of Builth . Regi nald wa s pursu ed i nto Swansea where he surrendere d Gowe r to Llyw elyn an d peac e was restored.
Reginald's loyalty came into question again in 1223 a n d L l y welyn besieged his castle at Builth. King Henry' s f orc e s re lieved Reginald but his father in law alread y ha d an ot her w ay to keep him in check. John, the tru e hei r of th e d e Brao se inheritance married Llywelyn' s daught er Marri ed i n 1219 . John had come of age and w as demand ing tha t Regin ald rel inquish the de Braose lan ds to him.

General Notes for Child Margar De Normandie Compte De St Clair
Clare was an English hermit in Normandy, who was mart y r e d i n the year 834 [actually 884], and became St. Cla i r . Th e to wn of St. Clere is near the hermit's retreat , a n d near by ca stle also. took the name St. Clair.
The family which took the castle's name is of Norse or i g i n , and like William the Norman Conqueror trace its d es ce n t t hrough Rollo the Viking. In the year 912 [the t rea t y wa s i n 911; Rollo was baptized in 912] Charles th e Si mp le, K in g of France met Rollo, who had ravaged th e coas t s of Nor man dy, at the castle of St. Clair, and t here ma d e him Duk e o f Normandy. Rollo's son William was called William Longsword a n d h e h a d another nickname. My information names the w if e o f Wal de rne as Margaret instead of Mary. This is pe rha ps t he dif fer ence between French and English. You r clip pin g says th at W illiam St. Clair s/o Walderne, di d not l ik e the Conque ror s o with some other discontente d barons , w ent to Scotla nd an d placed himself in the se rvice o f Kin g Malcolm III a nd hi s Queen St. Margaret. S ince the y di d not marry unti l 1070 t his puts William St . Clair i nto S cotland long afte r the con quest of 1066 . So one ass umes t hat St. Margaret w as just ad ded to th e story a s a fact th at happened after 1 066.
Malcolm returned with help from England's King Edwa r d t h e C onfessor around 1056 to drive out MacBeth. He w a s cor on ate d on St. Patrick's Day 1058. William's son , H enry t h e Crus ader, was born at Rosyln about 1060. Th is m eans th a t by 106 0 William was already there in Midl othia n Scotla nd . Pete Cu mming's article (Spring 1995 Yo urs Ay e) says " Th e first o f the St. Clairs came into th e are a during th e re ign of Mal colm Canmore (1057) and w ere gr anted land s of th e Barony Ro sline during this tim e. Duri ng the reig n of Mal colm's son D avid I (1124-53) , the Sin clairs move d into Ros lin." Now i f you are to l ook at the se last 2 se ntences, th ere seems t o be a conf lict of fac ts. The probl em is probab ly resolve d if th e Sinclairs, d uring the reig n of David I , moved in t o a new building a t Rosslyn.
Rollo, thus made the first Duke of Normandy, was t h e s o n o f Rogenwald the Rich, a favorite of Harold th e Fa ir H ai re d of Norway. Rollo had a son William Longwo od [a ctual l y Lon gsword], whose son, Richard, is the dir ect an cesto r o f th e Sinclairs of Norman blood, and als o of Wil liam t he C onque ror.
Richard's son, Richard, was the father of Robert, fa t h e r o f the Conqueror. Richard's son Malger, Robert's u nc l e a nd t he Conqueror's great-uncle, was the Earl of C orb ue il , and h e is the ancestor of the Sinclair faimly , aft e r i t leaves t he royal line.
