General Notes for Child Robert De Bulkeley

The Village of Bulkeley

The Bulkeley story begins in west central England , n o t f a r from the Welshborder. The town of Bulkeley i s on l y nin e m iles to the Southeast of thecity of Cheste r, i n t he tim e o f the early Bulkeleys, the seat of on e ofth e mos t power fu l earldoms. Seven miles to the Sout heast o f Ches ter lie s Be eston Castle. Directly south o f Beesto n Castl e lie s a fores ted ridge about three mile s long ca lled th e Bicke rton Hills . At the south end, ou tof view f rom th e castle , lies the vi llage of Bulkeley . Here the B ulkeley s were lo rds of the man or from "at l east as earl y as th e close of t he twelfth cent ury," an d here, it app ears, li ved at leas t four generation s o f the family. Sou theast fr om Beeston C astle are the tow n s of MarketDrayto n and Woor e. Here in th e northwest ti p o f county Salop ( formerlyShr opshire) sever al later ge neratio ns of Bulkele ys settled.

The History of Bulkeley

The Normans had swept through England late in the ele v e n t h centuryfollowing their victory at the battle of H as ti n g s in 1066, establishing their medieval baronies o ve r t h e An glo-Saxon landscape. Before the end ofthe nex t c entu ry , i n the barony of Malpas just south of the ol d Ro manca m p no w known as the city of Chester, one of th e man ors w a s hel d by aman named Robert, very likely a N orma n himsel f . The p lace was known asthe "bullock's cle aring ," or, i n t he Frenc h of the time, the "bullucleah " Rober t was lor d o f the "Bul lock's Clearing", Robert d e Bulkil eh orRober t d e Bulkeley.

The head of the bullock is prominent in the medieval he r a l d ry of the Bulkeleys. Their coat of arms is describ e d a s " sa ble a chevron between three bulls' heads cabos he d si lve r ar med gold." And the crest: "out of acrown g ol d a bu ll' s hea d silver armed gold." The family mott o i s given a s: N ec tem ere, nec timide (neither rashly n or t imidly).

After the Norman Conquest (1066) the barony of Malpas i n c l u ded Bulkeley and many other neighboring manors. It s o ve rl or d, Robert Fitz Hugh, wassaid to be both the mo st p owe rfu l a nd most merciful of the Norman settlers i n th e area.

The ordinary people of Bulkeley have left us no tangi b l e e v idence fromwhich to learn about their lives, unde rs ta ndab l e considering the insubstantial nature of thei r h ome s - s im ple wooden or wattle and daub structures w it h stra w that che d roofs - and Bulkeley has no ancien t chu rch o f its ow n t o provide a focal point for a sear ch.

What we do have are a collection of names on docume n t s a n d maps which tell us the bare outline and a knowl ed g e o f ev ents in the world outside Bulkeley to help u s ma k e som e inf ormed guesses about their lives.

One of the first documentary mentions of the villa g e w a s i n 1170 when itwas spelt Bulceleia. The name "en cl osu r e fo r bulls" would explain the three bulls head s whi ch f ea ture d on the arms of the Bulkeley family. The re ar e mor e th an th irty different spellings of the vill age na me bu t whet her Bu lky [1459], Boukelly [1578]; o r any o f the ot her spe llings , itis still the same villa ge. Spel ling di d not beco me syst ematized until the nine teenth ce ntury an d until the n peopl e spelt words any wa y they cho se.

While the lords of the manor busied themselves with c o u n t y and national politics the people of Bulkeley occu pi e d t he ir time earning the bestliving that they coul d fr o m th e lan d. The village was probably farmed unde r the t hr ee fi eld sy stem - the names 'town field', 'bi g town fi eld ','sma ll tow n field' and 'town croft' had s urvived a s fie ld name s to ap pear on the tithe map of 18 42. This m eant t hat eac h man far med a number ofstrips , usually 22 0 x 22 y ards, sc attered ar ound the three fi elds. The 'to wn croft ' was a sm aller par k where they us ually grew the ir vegeta bles.In ret urn for th eir strip s of land the vil lagers owe d their lor d service [b oth m ilitary and labor] . Every ma n grazed hi s stock on th e c ommon land includin g 'Bulkele y Hill' and t ook his cor n t o be ground in th e villagemill . The first me ntion o f a mil l at Bulkeley w as in 1308 'Mo lendium deBulkl egh ' [Bulkele y Mill]. In 13 20 'le miln bro k' is mentioned.

The villagers may also have had troublesome neighbor s s i n c e there is someevidence to suggest that the lan e whi c h we nd s its way through the gap inthe hills may h ave be e n th e ol d track known as the 'Walesmonsway' or'W alchmon -s treet ', b y which the Welsh came to trade for s alt in N ant wich.

If they did not always come in friendship they may ha v e f o u nd however that the men of Bulkeley were not nece ss ari l y th e helpless farmers thatone might imagine. Th e me n o f t he vi llage owed their lord military service a nd mo st o f th em wil l have been archers - and Cheshire a rchers wer e wel l known a s the most skilled and feared I n the la nd . Ever y man Inth e village was obliged to prac tice arch er y at h e town butt s - again afield name 'tw o butts' sur viv ed int o the 19th ce ntury, which may hav e been where t he a rcher y practice too k place.

Because of its proximity to the troublesome Welsh , i n t h e m iddle ages Cheshire was a County Palatine whi ch m ean t t ha t the earls had almost regal independence . It wa s th ei r dut y to defend the Welsh Marches. EarlRa nulph [t he si xt h earl ] said in a charter issued in 1215 , "Each o f th e bar ons whe n need arises in war shall d o fully th e servi ce o f as man y knights fees as he holds ; and thei r knight s an d free tena nts shall have coats o f mail, o r hauberk s and d efend thei r fees with their bo dies eve n if they ar e not kn ights and i f any such be un able so t o defend he m ay fin d a substitute."

In 1237 the earldom reverted to the crown and after t h e r e i gn of EdwardIII the king had the first claim on t h e Che sh ir e men.

The Cheshire archer went into battle wearing as prote c t i o n a leather jerkin over a padded jacket. Sometime s t h e je rk in had metal studs orplates. Occasionally a s mal l b reast pla te was worn. On the left arm was aleathe r bra ce a s prot ecti on from the twang of the bowstring . A stee l ca p was wo rn i n the case of the Cheshire men , covere d b y a uniform c ap.

The longbow was made mainly of yew, which meant each vi l l a g e had to grow yew trees, despite the fact that the y a r e p oi sonous to animals. In those days of the open f iel d s yste m t he only building to be fenced was the chur c h - t o kee p th e animals off the graves. So the yews we r e grow n insid e th e church fence - to protect the sto c k - a trad ition wh ich m ean that church yards are stil l f ull of ye w trees.

The bows were 5 - 6 feet in length and pulled 60 - 70 p o u n d s. The strings were made of flax rubbed with beeswa x . A rr ow s were 30 - 36 inches, barbedand with iron poin t s an d th e y were fletched with goose or peacock feather s . Thei r ran g e was a furlong; 220 yards. The bowmen car ri ed ashe af o f 2 4 arrows and a good archer could loos e si x arrow s a min ut e accurately. He would also carr y a swor d and da gger fo r cl ose in fighting. If he were u nfortunat e enoug h to be ca pture d he would probably hav e thefirs t two fing ers of hi s righ t hand amputated.

The lives of Bulkeley men were then not always paroch i a l . T hey would often have seen military service in Eng la n d a nd W ales and during the Hundred Years War, when t h e ki ng s of En gland were in dispute over the crown of F ra nce , th e men o f this village may well have found them sel ve s fight ing in F rance.

We know that in the Crecy campaign in 1346 William or W i l k i n de Bulkelegh de Alpraham the younger, the lord o f B ul ke le y, followed his king, Edward III, to France, d oubt les s t aki ng his full complement of archers with him .Thi s sam e Wi llia m and his Bulkeley men brought back la wles s way s fro m Franc e. In 1375 they laid siege to th e Val e Roya l Abbe y and ramp aged overthe countryside. Th ey ref used th e reque st of the b ailiff of Northwich to d isban d and twic e preven ted the Ear l of Chester's cour t from m eeting at M iddlewich , setting u p a court of the ir own in stead. Fro m there the y went on the ir lawless w ay toward s Nantwich w ith the resu lt that many m en joine d them t o gain their pr otection rath er than find th emse lves on t he opposing side . It says a gr eat deal for t h e strengt h of the special re lationship of t he Cheshir e me n with t he crown, that Willi am received a pa rdon fo r all o f hi s misdeeds as a resul t of the support o f Joh n of Gaun t , younger son of King Ed ward III.

Because of their special relationship the Kings of En g l a n d had an army raised from Cheshire and a personal b o d y gu ar d of Cheshire archers. This applies to Edwar d I I (1 307-1 327 ), Edward III (1327-1377) and Richard II (137 7-139 9). Ri char d II was particularly proud of his C heshi re arc hers; t hey w ere dressed in a distinctive gre en an d whit e unifor m wit h a whitehart [deer] on the lef t shou lder. O ther memb ers o f the populace were less tha n ethus iastic . The Chroni cles s ay they were arrogant, i nsolen t ruffian s who were o n far to o intimate terms wit h the K ing, malef actors from t hecount y of Chester, me n who ar e naturally b estial and rea dy for a ny iniquity . They tre ated the peopl e with contemp t and wer e guilt y of theftan d violence an d adultery, yet n o redres s wa s possible sin ce the Chester man were favorite s of th e K ing.

Among those recruited into the kings personal bodyg u a r d i n 1397 was Richard Bulkeley of Bickerton so onc e ag a i n th e Bulkeley's with their longbows were at th e cent e r o f nati onal affairs. Unfortunately for them, K ing Ric ha rd w as depo sed in 1399 and died soon afterward s, proba bl y murd ered. Wi thin a very short time the Ches hire rebe l s were de feated an dmost but not all of them w ere reconc il ed to Henr y IV. Th e men of Bulkeley then re turned t o a qu iet villag e life; qu iet that is unless th e wild We lshme n traveling t o Nantwic h cared to chance t heir arm b y prov oking the loca ls.

In fact, life in medieval Bulkeley was probably anyth i n g b u t peaceful attimes. Farming was a hazardous occup at io n br in ging them close tostarvation in a bad year. L if e i n medi eva l Cheshire was lawless - robbersand outla w s wer e a dang er i mmediately outside of the centers ofh ab itatio n.

The Black Death We do not have exact figures to indic a t e h o w much the village was affected by the epidemi c o f th e Bl ac k Death, or Bubonic Plague, whichswept th e cou ntr y and t h e rest of Europe regularly In the Middl e Ages .Th e Great P la gue of 1347 - 1349 is reputed to ha ve kill ed o ne third o fth e population. It seemed paradox ically , to ki ll the youn g an d strongmore quickly than a ny othe r and of ten the fiel ds re mained unploughed andun harveste d for lac k of manpower.

Medieval village life was never quite the same afte r t h e P l ague since the laborer, due to scarcity, coul d comm an d hi gh er prices for his hire andgradually feuda l servi ce s beca m e converted into wages and rent. The vi llager b eca me free r , although he still was subject to t he cour t admi nistere d b y the lord of the manor, which h ad the p ower t o inquir e int o felony, property disputes , rights o f way , etc.. Th e gover nment tried to maintai n the old wa ys b y keeping th e level o f wages and price s to the level s a t which they we re befor e the plague. T he Statute of L abou rers1351 made i t an offen se to ask o r to grant highe r wag es, and in tha t same year t he town ship of Bulkele y was fi ned for failin g to bring to t ria l before the she riff, wor kers who had ta ken higher wages.
