General Notes (Husband)

Roger de Montgomery II, better known as Earl Roger in t h e D omesday, but officially the seigneur of Montgomery, w a s th e major recipient of Shropshire holdings. An old ma n o f con siderable wealth and power, he contributed 60 shi ps t o th e invasion fleet and was in command of a wing a t the B attl e of Hastings. He returned to Normandy with Qu een Mati lda , and the young Duke Robert as Duke William' s represent ativ e in Normandy. He became head of the counc il that gove rne d the Duchy of Normandy in Duke William' s frequent abse nce s in England. The Norman Montgomery fam ily ancestry wa s clo sely interwoven either by blood or ma rriage with th e Duch y of Normandy. However, the family hi story in Norman dy wa s not without blemish. Roger had fou r brothers, Hugh , Rober t, William and Gilbert. All four b rothers were murd ered i n revenge for the murder of Osbern e de Crepon, guard ian o f Duke William. Roger was the surv ivor. Continuing, R oger d e Montgomery had four sons. Elde st was Robert, Coun t of Ale ncon, and successor in Normand y to his vast estate s which h e still held for his fathe r Roger as his chief do main. He w as followed by second so n, Hugh, who inherited t he Earldo m of Arundel, Chicheste r and Shrewsbury, the lif e custodia n of the main Montgome ry family domains grante d in England . These would eventua lly go to Robert in 1098 , purchased fr om William Rufus fo r 3000 pounds. Next young est was Count R oger de Poitou wh o was made the first Ear l of Lancaster b y Duke William o f Normandy, a less maganam ious grant whic h befitted the t hird youngest son. Philip , the youngest, re mained in Norm andy and accompanied Duk e Robert on the firs t crusade t o the Holy land, and died t here in 1094. Earl Roger was responsible to Duke William of Normand y a s h is chief architect in the defence of the middle mar che s o f the border in his defence against the Welsh. He b uil t man y castles including Montgomery, Shrewsbury, Arund el , Ludlow , Clun, Hopton and Oswestry. His son, Robert, d esc ribed a t the Conquest as a 'novice in arms', but who m igh t have be en 40 by the Domesday, represented his fathe r Ear l Roger, a nd created some confusion in the records . Roger , the father , became the Earl of Shrewsbury and th e Earl o f Arundel i n England, and retained his domains i n Normand y at Bailleu l (Kings of Scotland), Belmeis (Beau mais), Pan tulf, Vimouti ers, Say and Tornai. However, Ear l Roger als o became confus ed with Roger de Beaumont in No rmandy, who , it is claimed , was also head of the counci l in Normandy . But historian s tend to think of this perio d as being loc ked in marble. T he volatility of the favour s of the Norma n court were dynam ic, heavily laced with tr eachery by lan d hungry Norman nobl es eager to share in th e prize of thi s new and wealthy land , England. The Beaumo nts, Counts o f Meulan in Normandy wh o became Earls and Co unts of Leices ter in England, do not s eem to be related t o the Montgomer ys in any significant wa y and were very po werful in thei r own right, and, in a diff erent time frame , Roger de Beau mont could also have been he ad of the Norm an governing Cou ncil. Since over 90% of the lordships and manors of Shropshir e w e re held in Chief at the Domesday by the powerful Ear l Rog er , it is perhaps more interesting to determine th e intric at e cross-weave of under tenants of Norman noble s who assi ste d in the administration of these domains. Su rprisingly , ver y little of Shropshire was retained by th e King as hi s ow n land, and very little given to the Chur ches and Bish ops a s was the usual procedure. Nevertheless , we are her e dealin g with the Domesday Book record, 20 y ears after th e Conques t. In the intervening period, Ear l Roger, who mus t by Domes day have been a very old man, a nd his son Robert , may wel l have grown and consolidated t he original grant s after th e Conquest to a sizeable mini- kingdom on the Wel sh border , particularly since the domai ns were constantl y changing , shifting, accomodating the i ntrusions and wast ing by th e Welsh, and imposing great fl exibility in the bo rder bound aries. Almost all of Derbysh ire was held by Ear l Roger bu t we have listed some of th e interesting under-t enants wh o held Castles, lordships o r villages for him an d some whic h he still held as tenant -in-chief: The Norman upper heirarchy was not large. This elite gr o u p consisted of 22 honours or baronies which virtually c on tr olled all of Normandy and contributed largely to Duk e Wi lli am and the invasion and Conquest of England. The y wer e th e Counts of Aumale, the Mortimers, the Giffards , the F errie rers, the Counts d'Eu, the Tosnys, the Bisets , the Fi tzOsbe rns, the Warrens, the Marmions, the Grantme snils, th e Malet s, the FitzGilberts or Baldwins, the Tanc arvilles , the Vern ons, the Beaumonts, the Paynels, the Au bignys, t he Monforts , the Estouvilles, the Bisets, and th e Gournays . These hous es, or their offshoots, or lesser h ouses, woul d play an imp ortant role in English history fo r the nex t 3 centuries, an d give rise to thousands of dis tinguishe d surnames througho ut Britain. To the observant , it will b e noticed that certa in other significants fami les are miss ing from this role o f honour such as the Bali ols, the Bigo ts, the Bullys, the d e Lacys, the Mandeville s, the Mowbray s, the Montgomerys, th e Pomeroys, the Percy s, the St.Johns , the Tracys, the Skipt ons, the Montfichet s, and many othe rs. The circumstances o f the latter name s and their subseq uent rise to fame are va riable and comp lex, and are boun d up with the Norman protoc ols from whic h surnames emerge d either in Normandy itself o r later i n the settlement o f England. The Marquis de la Motte of Island of Re was the progenito r of the Carolina family. His arms, as borne by Francis Mot te, were: Gules, within a bordure Or, a mount charged wit h five trees, proper; Crest, a mount and trees as in arms.

General Notes for Child John Abraham Motte

After the Revocation of the Edict of Nantes, the Marq uis De La Motte left France and went to Holland. He carrie d with him a large fortune and established himself in so re spectable a position that one of his sons was appointed Gov ernor of Batavia. The second son of the Marquis De La Mott e was called the Sieur Jean De la Motte. He was sent by th e Dutch government as consul to Dublin, Ireland. There ar e several records of his family in the Reformed Dutch Churc h of Dublin. While in Dublin, the Sieur De la Motte anglici zed his name to John Abraham Motte. He came to South Caroli na on the "Crown Galley" about 1704, but in 1709, after rec eiving grants for several plantations, he returned to Dubli n for his family and brought them to America. In 1706, Capt ain John A. Motte was a commissioner of the Church Act. I n April, 1710, he was appointed a commissioner of the firs t public school established in South Carolina. He died in S outh Carolina 7 August, 1711, and was buried in the West en d of Old St Michael's Church in Charleston. The church wa s later burned, and the present St Michael's was erected o n top of his grave.
