At the beginning of Johns reign, Saire de Quince y w a s n o t a Baron, muchless a great one. In the civil w ar t h e Ki n g had had the advantage overthe rebels. Few o f th e B aron s h ad had much actual military experience.Th e Bar on s contr ibut ion to the war was the scutage they p aid , a wa r fundsu bstit uted for the contingent of knight s ow ed to t he King s servic e. Themoney was collected fro m vas sals, an d mercen ary knigh ts were paid fromit. Man y of th e mercena ries wer e regular s who served the sam e Baron fr omcampaig n to campa ign, but t hose Barons wh o are known t o have had extensive m ilitary exp erience we re only Sair e de Quincey , RobertFitzW alter, Willi am d e Mowbray, Will iam dAlbini , Roger de Cress i andRober t d e Roos.
Saire de Quincey is associated with two stalwart Cas t l e s i n the South ofEngland: Colchester and Winchester , b o t h wit h the Latin castrum root,signifying that the y we r e on ce th e site of Roman forts.
Colchester Castle could not have been built before th e e a r l y 12thCentury, though Roman materials may have be en r e- us e d in itsconstruction. The keep, the only porti on no w s urv iv ing, is in completeharmony with other Norm an cas tles . Co lch ester must have been a formidablestron ghold , an d a chal leng e to Saire de Quincey. The King' s men he ld th eCastle a gains t Quincey, the first Earl t o attack C olches ter. Joh n hadgiv en the fortress into th e charge o f a Flem ing who m he though t he couldtrust. Bu t Quincey t ook the C astle, a nd later fou nd holding it m oredifficult . The E arl hel dthe Castle for tw o mo nths, but lac k of food force d him t o give up andtake f l ight to France.
Colchester was the largest Norman keep in England. It m e a s u res onehundred fifty-two by one hundred seventeen f ee t , e nc losing nearly twicethe area of the Tower of Lon do n . It s wal ls vary between eleven and thirtyfeet in th ick ne ss. I t wa s erected either by William the Conquero r o r byW illia m II . It is of the quadrangular variety, t urre ted a t the c orner s.In it and elsewhere herringbon e mason ry ha s been no ted.
Winchester Castle was first erected by William the Conq u e r o r. Lateralterations and extra height were added b y He n r y II I, about the year1138. The great Hall has Pur bec k co lu mns o f 13th Century architecture,supportin g a rest ore d roo f an d containing handsome windows of th e sameapp roxi mate p eriod . Only the keep remains.
