General Notes (Husband)

Our Sparrow line descends from HIRAM WILLIAM SPARROW, who, according to information handed down in that family through the years, came to America in the early 1800's "in a sailboat". this quotation is from a great-grandson, George Sparrow, who had accumulated some information on early generations of the family. We do not know where he entered this country, but there is indication that it was either Virginia or Charleston, SC.

There are a number of descendants of HIRAM WILLIAM SPARROW now living in the Sparrow Springs area in North Carolina, just across the State line above Clover, South Carolina, at the foot of Kings Mountain. A Sparrow family reunion has been held at the site of the Springs the first Sunday in August for a number of years. Most of my notes on the Sparrow line were obtained by attending some of these reunions.

The water of Sparrow Springs has apparently had some reputation for its medicinal qualities from the earliest days of the settlement of that area. The property was acquired by Hiram William Sparrow at some point in his early life, and became known by his name. In his will (1887) he goes at length into suggested use to be made of the property, envisioning a hotel and other facilities to fully develop what he considered the economic possibilities of the Springs. He was possibly influenced by the successful operation of the Glenn Springs resort in Spartanburg County, SC, at that time. None of his plans materialized, however, and the site of the Springs, about thirty acres, is now maintained by family descendants in the area.

The parents of Hiram William sparrow are not known. According to descendants now living in the sparrow Spring community, he came to America from Ireland as a young man, sometime in the early 1800's. He was born presumably in Ireland.

In the early 1830's he had evidently migrated to the area around Lincolnton, NC. On January 19, 1834, he married Julia Ann Dews, of Lincolnton.

George Sparrow, a descendant, of Clover, SC, has given me a small package of account records, tax receipts and other such papers handed down from Hiram William Sparrow. These records indicate that he was a cabinet maker or carriage maker by trade, and evidently very thrifty and particular about business matters.

Hiram William Sparrow and Julia Ann Dews Sparrow began their married life in 1834 in Lincolnton, and moved to Davidson College about 1837, where they were living until about 1845. From there they moved to some point in Cleveland County, NC, possibly the Springs location. At the time of his death, he was living on the Sparrow Springs tract.

The following notes are taken from entries in the family Bible of Hiram William Sparrow, now in the possession of descendant, Miss Nellie Elizabeth Sparrow, who lives in the Springs community"

"Hiram William Sparrow and Julia A. Dews was married the 19 of January 1834.

*Thomas Alexander Sparrow was born at Lincolnton December 18, 1835.

*George Washington Sparrow was born at Davidson College, Mecklenburg, March 8, 1838.

Cyrus Pinckney Sparrow was born at Davidson College March 23, 1844.

William Henry Sparrow was born in Cleveland County, NC, August 16, 1846.

Hiram William Sparrow died January 1, 1888, and is buried at Long Creek Presbyterian Church, near Bessemer City, N.C.

General Notes for Child Nancy Elizabeth Sparrow

After the death of her first husband, Robert Daniel Sellers, Nancy Elizabeth Sparrow Sellers, married again to John J. Howell, and by that marriage there were ten children. At the Sparrow family reunion at Sparrow Springs, NC, in August, 1962, I met Mrs. Flossie Alice Howell Johnston, who was the youngest of these ten children, and in her late 70's at the time. Mrs. Johnston was thus a half-sister of Patrick Henry Sellers. She gave me a list of the ten Howell children, of which Charles was the oldest. He was born June 22, 1866, which means that Nancy Elizabeth, widow of Daniel Sellers, must have married Howell sometime in 1865. This would indicate that Daniel Sellers died probably in 1864. Unfortunately, Mrs. Johnston knew almost nothing about Daniel Sellers, her mother's first husband.

General Notes (Husband)

Thomas Dews, County. - 060; Date - 1851; Recorded Copy (Will) - WB-2/356, Original at NC Archives Source: Genealogical Records, 1665-1900, NC Wills

The Dews line is French, immigrants by that name having come to America from the Isle of Guernsey, off the coast of France. Thomas Dews, Sr., and his wife Martha _________ are the earliest of the line now known, although there is a possibility that it can be carried further back, as stated below.

The parents of Thomas Dews, Sr. are not known. He came to America from the Isle of Guernsey, off the coast of France, sometime in the early 1800's. His wife, Martha _______, was also born "in the Island of Guernsey", as her tombstone reads.

Descendants in the Sparrow family say Thomas and Martha Dews landed here in Charleston, SC, but there is no proof of this. Others by the name of Dews, also from Guernsey, came through ports in Virginia and eastern North Carolina.

Thomas and Martha were married before leaving Guernsey. They settled in Lincolnton, North Carolina, where he was evidently a carpenter or followed a similar trade successfully.

At one of the Sparrow reunions I attended, those present had been asked to bring any old family records that might be of interest to the group. Among these papers was the remains, partially torn away, of a letter of introduction brought by Thomas Dews when he left Guernsey for America. It is an attestation to his good character by the Rector of the Church at St. Peter Port, Isle of Guernsey. In addition to the character reference, the paper appears to have included a certificate of the marriage of Thomas and Martha, and the names of the parents of each. Unfortunately, that part of the paper with these items, and the date it was written, is largely torn away and missing. (It is possible that this same information could be obtained today form the same church records.)

Thomas Dews, Sr. died in Lincolnton, NC, August 20, 1851, and is buried in the old Lutheran cemetery there. In his will he mentions his two sons, leaving his tools, lumber, etc. to George, but says "I will no part of my estate" to Thomas, Jr. The sparrow descendants say that Thomas, Jr., was a well educated, scholarly young man, and was making a name for himself in the practice of law in Lincolnton, but died before reaching thirty years of age. I don't know how to account for the treatment given him in his father's will. (See notes on Thomas Dews, Jr.)

Roswell Elmer was the editor of the North Carolina Spectator and Western Advertiser, a weekly newspaper published in Rutherfordton, N.C., first on Fridays and later on Saturdays. It began publication in 1830, shortly after Elmer set up his press, and seems to have ceased in 1835 or 1836. Late in its run, the Spectator adopted the motto: "Cherish every measure which may foster our brotherly Union, and perpetuate a Constitution of Government destined to be the primitive and precious model of what is to change the condition of man over the globe" (Jefferson).

In a February 1835 issue, the following notice appeared. Among the signatories were men who were involved in underwriting the purchase of the press and the first order of printing supplies.
To Printers:
The publication of the North Carolina Spectator and
Western Advertiser and the printing business connected
with it for some time under Editorial management of Mr.
Roswell Elmer, Jr., being about to be relinquished by him,
for some other pursuit, it becomes necessary to engage the
service of another competent individual, to take charge of
the concern. ... [The Spectator has now a quite
respectable list of subscribers, and an extensive and
profitable circle of job work. ... It may not be amiss to
say that the political course and principles hitherto
supported by the Spectator have been those of the
"Jeffersonian school" and it is believed a majority of
this community entertaining the same principles, would be
more likely to patronize a continuance than a departure
from them.

He was drowned in the Second Broad River, August 4th, 1838, aged 30 years, 2 months and 25 days. his remains lie in honor beneath a marble shaft, the tribute of a noble-heated woman to the man who adored her while he lived, and marks the spot where rests he lover and her love. Judge William H. Battle knew Mr. Dews at Chapel Hill and often spoke of his talents and his genius. Toward the close of an address before the literary societies at the commencement of 1865, growing reminiscent, Judge Battle said: " I will occupy a few more moments of your time in recalling from the dim recollections of the past the names of a few men, each of whom was well-regarded as a college genius of the day, and who with well-directed energies, and a longer life might have left a name the world would not willingly let die. In the year 1824 Thomas Dews, a young man from the county of Lincoln, took his degree of Bachelor of Arts, dividing with Prof. Sims, Judge Manly and ex-governor Graham the highest honor of the class. His parents were poor, and it is said resorted to the humble occupation of selling cakes for the purpose of procuring means for the education of their promising boy. After graduation, he studied law and commenced the practice with every prospect of eminent success, when unhappily, a morbid sensitiveness of temperament drove him to habits of intemperance, during one of the fits he came to an untimely end. His name, which ought to have gone down to posterity on account of the great deeds achieved by extraordinary talents, will probably be remembered only in connection with a happily-turned impromptu epitaph". Yet it has gone down in history immortalized by his neighbor and friend, Col. James R. Dodge, a distinguished practitioner for many years at the Lincolnton bar. Colonel Dodge was a son of Gen. Richard Dodge and Sarah Ann Dodge, his mother being the sister of Washington Irving, of New York. Those acquainted with the playful writings of Washington Irving will not be surprised at the spontaneous retort of his nephew. But one residence separated the Dews home from that of colonel Dodge in Lincolnton. At April term. 1832 of Rutherford Superior Court, David L. Swain, afterwards Governor, was on the bench and in the bar were Samuel Hillman, Tom Dews and Mr. Dodge. While Mr. dodge was addressing the jury, Judge Swain recalled a punning epitaph on a man named Dodge, wrote it on a piece of paper, and passed it around to the merriment of the bar; and when Colonel Dodge had finished his speech, he found it lying on his table:

" Epitaph of James R. Dodge, Esq., Attorney-At-Law

"Here lies a Dodge, who dodged all good,

And dodged a deal of evil,

Who after dodging all he could,

He could not dodge the Devil."

Mr. Dodge read the paper, turned it over and wrote on the other side:

"Epitaph of Three Attorneys"

"Here lies a Hillman and a Swain,

Whose lot let no man choose;

They lived in sin and died in pain,

And the Devil got his Dews."(dues)
