BIO: Eva McCARTY, Bennett's half-sister, has provided compiler with the following obituary:
BENNETT DIAL SON OF SWAN LEWIS AND MOSSIE LEE ELDER DIAL The first child of Swan Lewis and Mossie Elder Dial was born a healthy child Oct. 6, 1917 Old Loyston, Union Co. Tn. At the age of 7 he took the measles, and that is when the bad times began. Although he was under the tender loving care of his mother and grandparents, and the doctor the measles settled in his eyes. With several surgery's he was still left with 10 percent vision until his death at age 67.
Bennett was never able to have a public job due to his vision. He did do work on the farm until he was struck with another illness in 1957. He was working on the farm when he became ill. When he didn't come in for lunch his mother and a nephew went to check on him. They found him lying in the field where he was working. He was rushed to St. Mary's hospital in Knoxville, Tn. The doctor's could not diagnose the problem immediately. Finally after a day or so they finally did an exploratory surgery in which they found that his appendix had ruptured, and gangrene had already set up, and had damaged his brain and nervous system. The next 28 years of his life was a nightmare of several nervous breakdowns. Due to the heavy dosages of nerve medicine for his condition over the 28 years he died March 19, 1985 from Cirrhosis of the Liver. He was laid to rest in the Hillvale Baptist Church Cemetery next to his mother.
After their mother's death, Bennett made his home with Eva and her husband, "Mac". Eva was his sole "nurse" and care-giver until his death, at her home, a house built on the site of their childhood home.

BIO: Eva McCARTY has provided the following obituary for Swan DIAL:
SWAN DIAL HUSBAND OF MOSSIE ELDER Swan Lewis Dial son of William and Elizabeth Carroll Dial was born in Union Co., Old Loyston, TN the Post Office. Oct. 20, 1883. At this time this area was called Dial Hollow near the Powell River and Privit Flatt. It is now known as the Central Peninsula owned by the Tennessee Valley Authority. Swan Lewis Dial married Mossie Lee Elder daughter of Jesse Jackson Elder and Lavisa Lay Elder, Dec. 25, 1916 at the Privit Flatt School-Church by the Rev. Bennett Hale from whom Swan and Mossie named their first child.
From this union two children were born: 1. Bennett Dial born Oct. 6, 1917 Died March 19, 1985 Clinton, TN. 2. Estella (Stella) Bernice Dial Born. Feb. 18, 1819 Married Elisha Miller.
Swan Lewis Dial died in his sleep of a Heart Attack July 28, 1918 at his home never seeing his second child. Mossie had gone to her parents to spend the night with the intentions of getting Bennett's picture made the following day. A man traveling around taking pictures at the time. His mother went to see why he didn't come, and found him in bed dead. He was buried first in the Old Lay Cemetery, and later moved to Bakers Forge Memorial Cemetery, LaFollette, TN in 1935.
Swan Lewis Dial was a shy quiet man and made his living as a farmer. He was a very religious man of the Baptist faith. He told his wife Mossie a few weeks before he died that God had called him to preach the Gospel, and if he didn't God was going to take his life. Being the shy person he was he didn't take the call.
His wife Mossie of only a short time was left with one child of eight months old and pregnant with another child went back home to live with her parents. There she lived for eight years working and sewing for people to make a living for her and the two children. She married her second husband Brad Wells son of Elijah and America Sweat Wells.

BIO: With all of the large volume of family lore and data furnished by Eva McCARTY on this family, there was surprisingly little biographical information concerning Mossie Lee ELDER, Eva's mother. A group picture was included in one of Mrs. McCARTY's letters, which showed Mossie, her second husband, Brad WELLS, and several other members of the Elder family. This photo was dated about 1913, and showed the ladies in their long skirts and large, feathered hats. Mossie appeared to be of average height and slender, with dark hair and eyes -- a very attractive young lady! One family story included in the biographies of Jesse Jackson and Lavisa (LAY) ELDER concerning Mossie was the incident of the Indians taking the ELDERs' young daughter, Perry Martha, from their home in OKLAHOMA. It seems that Mossie and her mother, Lavisa, chased the Indians' wagon and were successful in getting the little girl back. Mossie's report to her daughter in later years, was that Perry Martha was contentedly playing with the Indian beads in the back of their wagon, totally unaware that she might have been in danger. Eva reports that her mother was of the Baptist faith. Mossie was married both times at the Privit Flat School-Church. The cause of her death was respiratory ailment and heart failure. She was buried in the cemetery of the Hillvale Baptist Church in Clinton, TN. In June, 1997, Mrs. McCARTY sent compiler a large amount of family data with pictures, newspaper articles, etc. In that collection was the following obituary for her mother, Mossie WELL.
MEMORIAL OBITUARY Entered Into Eternal Rest Friday, Feb. 16, 1979
Mossie Lee ELDER WELLS, 85, Miller Road, Route 1, Clinton, died Friday at 10:10 a.m. of respiratory arrest at Fort Sanders Presbyterian Hospital in Knoxville. She had been in the hospital three days. Mrs. WELLS enjoyed quilting, sewing, crocheting, cooking, flower gardening and growing house plants. She was the oldest member of Hillvale Baptist Church in the Hillvale Community. Her husband, Brad WELLS, a retired farmer, died in 1957. Her first husband Swan DIAL died in 1918. Mrs. WELLS is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elisha (Estella) MILLER and Mrs. Elgin (Eva) McCARTY, both of Clinton; two sons, Bennett DIAL of Clinton and Earl WELLS of Cincinnati, OHIO; two sisters, Mrs. Perry WELLS of Oliver Springs and Mrs. Hattie WELLS of Clinton; one brother, Marion ELDER of Seattle, WASH.; eight grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Services were held Sunday afternoon at Hilvale Baptist Church in the Hillvale Community, with the Rev. Clifford FRAKER and the Rev. Steve HILL officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton was in charge of arrangements. The family requests that any memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Mary AUBUCHON, ... Pallbearers were grandchildren, Donald MILLER, Darrell MILLER, Ricky MILLER and nephews, Robert WELLS, Dennis ELDER and Donald WELLS.

When he didn't come in for lunch his mother and a nephew went to check on him. They found him lying in the field where he was working. He was rushed to St. Mary's hospital in Knoxville, Tn. The doctor's could not diagnose the problem immediately. Finally after a day or so they finally did an exploratory surgery in which they found that his appendix had ruptured, and gangrene had already set up, and had damaged his brain and nervous system. The next 28 years of his life was a nightmare of several nervous breakdowns. Due to the heavy dosages of nerve medicine for his condition over the 28 years he died March 19, 1985 from Cirrhosis of the Liver. He was laid to rest in the Hillvale Baptist Church Cemetery next to his mother.
After their mother's death, Bennett made his home with Eva and her husband, "Mac". Eva was his sole "nurse" and care-giver until his death, at her home, a house built on the site of their childhood home.
