How Did Rose Hill Get It's Name? (by:Gus Bryan)

The village of Rose Hill is located on the old Thre e N o t c h Trail just few miles southeast of the Conecuh R iv e r a t th e Junction of the Opp-Dozier road. Varied sto ri e s hav e bee n told as to how Rose Hill received it's n am e . One st ory i s that Andrew Jackson gave the plac e a na m e as he pas sed th rough in 1818. Another story i s tha t a n old Negro wo man b y the name of Rose formerl y live d o n a hill near th e presen t stores and people be gan ref erri ng to the place a s Rose Hi ll because of thi s old Neg r o . Still another stor y is tha t a large Dorth y Perkus s (s even sisters) rose bus h formerl y stood nea r the sit e of W idow Colvin's old hous e and tha t the nam e originat ed beca use of this rose bush . Still anot her s tory is tol d d tha t Rose Hill was once ca lled China Hi l l.

It is impossible to establish a date on which the pio n e e r s ettlers moved into Rose Hill community. It has be e n d ef init ely established that white people were livin g i n th e a rea i n the 182 0's. The pioneer settlers cam e fro m Geo rgia , Sout h Carolina, and areas adjacent to t he Ros e Hil l area . General Notes for Child Joint King Harald I "Harefoot" Of England

1 UPDA 2 DATE 1037 2 PLAC Acceded:

Old Westminster Abbey, then St Clement Dane's London

Harold ruled England as Regent (elected at Oxford), with Earl Leofric of Mercia's backing, while his half-brother Hardecanute was busy in Denmark. In 1036 his followers blinded and murdered rival claimant to the throne Alfred the Aetheling (son of Ethelred 11) and, although illegitimate, Harold had himself proclaimed King of England (1037). He expelled Hardecanute's mother Emma to exile at Bruges, and repelled Scottish and Welsh invasions.

Harold's reign was short and uneventful. He never married and died at Oxford aged about 24. Hardicanute had his body disinterred and flung into a marsh.

General Notes for Child Hardicanute Hardicanute King Of Denmark

1 NAME Hardicanute - Harthacnut Canute/11/ 1 UPDA 2 PLAC King of Denmark

Died of a fit while drinking at a wedding feast.Lambeth London

18 Mar 1040 > 8 Jun 1042 = reign of Harthacnut of England

His reign was brief and marred by violence and treachery. His half-brother Harold briefly ousted him while Hardecanute established his reign in Denmark (1035-42). On Harold's death, Hardecanute returned to England backed by a large fleet. He incurred unpopularity for acts including throwing Harold's body in a bag, burning Worcester for killing royal tax collectors, and murdering the captured Earl Edwulf of Northumbria (1041). Hardecanute died of a fit.

He was regarded as the legitimate heir to England, but tarried so long in Denmark the people got tired of waiting for him and elected his half-brother instead. In 1039 he joined his mother, Emma, in Bruges and on Harold's death the following year set out for England with a fleet of sixty ships to claim his inheritance. He imposed crippling taxes which soon alienated those who had solicited his return and, in the words of the Anglo-Saxon Chronicle, "never did anything worthy of a King while he reigned." Hardicanute's reign was even shorter than his brother's (1040-42). He died at a wedding feast at Lambeth "as he stood at his drink and... suddenly fell to the ground with a horrible convulsion; and those who were near thereto took hold of him, but he never spoke again." He was buried with his father at Winchester.
