The spelling d'Oremus indicates a French origin, as if the name were derived from "oremus", meaning prayer. Or, it could be a version of de Rheims, an ancient town. Or it may be a latinized ve4rsion of the original Dore.
Emmigrated to the United States about 1685-86, settling at Acquacknonk, (now Patterson), NJ, inferred from the fact that his son Johannes, was baptized at Middelburg, Holland, on Sepember 7, 1684, and his son Thomas, was baptized at Bergwn, NJ April 11, 1687.
The Immigrants appeared to be blessed with more worldly goods than most other arrivals. In 1708, Cornelis Doremus had acquired an extensive farm at Wesel, lying on the North side of of the Wesel Drift Way (now called Crooks Avenue), and extending from the Passiac River to the mountain, having a width of about 10 chains and consisting of about 150 acres, in what is now the extreme southeastern and southern section of Patterson, NJ. Cedar Lawn Cemetery, Lake View, and South Patterson now (1897) occupy portions of the farm ground. Cornelis lived on his farm at Wesel.
Cornelis joined with seven of his neighbors in purchasingfrom Peter Sonmans of Perth Amboy, NJ, one of the East Jersey Proprieters, a tract described as containing 2800 acres, but actually moch more, on the Wesel Mountain, extending from the steep rocks at Patterson Falls to the headwaters of the Peckamin River, where the village of Cedar Grove is now. The deed is dated November 27, 1711, and the amount of money exchange was L660 New York money, plus a yearly quit-rent of one pepercorn if lawfully demanded. Doremus was allotted 1/8 ofthis tract, embracing the Cedar Grove neighborhood. He settled his son Thomas on this land.
