SELKIRK, EARL OF (1771-1820), was a Scottish colonizer who opened the Canadian West for settlement during the early 1800's. He founded the Red River Colony, the first permanent settlement in what is now Manitoba (see MANITOBA [The Red River Colony]).
Selkirk, whose given and family name was Thomas Douglas, was born on St. Mary's Isle in Kirkcudbrightshire (now Dumfries and Galloway Region), Scotland. He became the fifth Earl of Selkirk in 1799.
In 1803 and 1804, Selkirk sent about 900 Scottish peasants to settle in the Canadian colonies of Prince Edward Island and Upper Canada. He established the Red River Colony in 1812 with about 100 people. But the farming colony interfered with the local fur trade. In 1815, trappers of the North West Company, a fur-trading firm, and a group of metis (people of mixed white and Indian ancestry) drove out the settlers. Troops led by Selkirk regained control of the colony in 1817.
Thomas DOUGLAS-HAMILTON
As Earl of Selkirk he used his privileged position to help those who were not so fortunate. In 1792, aged 21, his social conscience was roused when he toured the highlands of Scotland and discovered the poverty in which the majority of the population lived. He decided that this situation could only be cured by mass emigration overseas and, in 1802, he began campaigning for an official initiative to colonise the Red River Valley in Manitoba, Canada. When the government expressed no interest in his plans, Douglas determined to carry out the scheme himself. Instead of the Red River, he secured a grant of Crown lands on Prince Edward Island off the east coast of Canada and in 1803 settled 800 Scotsmen there.
COLONISTS
The Prince Edward Island colony proved a success, but Douglas had not abandoned his original idea of settling the Red River Valley. By 1811, he had acquired control of the Hudson Bay Company and obtained the grant of a vast tract of Red River Land - 45 million acres in all. In the autumn of that year, Douglas sent out his first party of colonists, and further groups followed in 1812 and 1814. Others, however, had a vested interest in the Red River Valley, and the Northwest Fur Company, in particular, regarded the new settlements as a threat to their profits. Accordingly, it attacked Douglas' colony in 1816, forcing the colonists to surrender. The Company finished the job by destroying the Red River settlement and burning its crops. Douglas retaliated by seizing the Company's chief post at Fort William on Lake Superior and appropriating its stores. In 1818, the Earl was fined £2000 for ruining the Company's trade. These troubles eventually proved too much for the Earl to bear and his health deteriorated. He returned to England towards the end of 1818, and later died in Pau in southern France on 8th April 1820. However,, his life's work did not go unrecognised. In 1821, the Scottish settlers in Canada agreed a peace and Manitoba went on to become a thriving province, with the town and county of Selkirk being named after the 5th Earl.

History The last of the earls of Atholl of the Royal Celtic line died before 1211 and the earldom was passed through the female line to David of Strathbogie whose family forfeited the title following its opposition to Robert the Bruce. After being held by King Robert II and his son Walter, the earldom was given in 1457 to King James II's maternal half-brother, John Stewart of Balvenie. The title eventually passed to the Murrays of Tullibardine by marriage in 1629. For his support of the Royalist cause during the Civil War, the 5th Earl was created Marquis of Atholl and in 1702 his son was created first Duke of Atholl by Queen Anne for his loyalty to the government against the Jacobites. The celebrated fiddler Neil Gow was musician to the 2nd, 3rd and 4th Dukes of Atholl.

General Notes for Child James Murray 2nd Duke
James 2nd Duke of Atholl, Lord of Man 1736-1764 Born 28 September 1690, third son of John second marquis and first Duke of Atholl by Lady Katherine Hamilton. The title and estates descended on him by the attainder of his elder brother William, marquis of Tullibardine, following the later's part in the 1715 rebellion. James joined 1st Footguards as captain-lieutenant in Jan 1711/2 and in 1714 became captain and lieutenant-colonel. In Jan/Feb 1716 he joined the Duke of Argyll in pursuit of Jacobites marching from Perth to Aberdeen.
Elected M.P. for Perthshire in 1715 and rechosen 1722.
Succeeded to Peerage on death of father in 1724 though title was obviously questioned as an act of Parliament was passed in 1733 to extend and explain the act of 1716 by which his elder brother had been attainted and the line of descent altered.
In June 1733 made lord privy seal, rechosen in 1734 when also invested with order of garter.
Succeeded to Lordship of Man following death of James, 10th earl of Derby, in 1736, by virtue of descent as maternal great-grandson of James Stanley, 7th earl. "The succession to it was governed by the conditions under which it had been re-granted to the sixth Earl by James I., and by the provisions of the Act of Parliament which affirmed the grant. By these conditions the Island reverted on failure of heirs male to the sixth Earl to the heirs general or right heirs of James the seventh, or great, Earl of Derby. In 1726 the right heir of the seventh Earl was Lady Harriet Ashburnham, the only daughter of Lord Ashburnham by his wife Henrietta, daughter of William, ninth Lord Derby. ... Lady Harriet, however, died while she was a child, and the succession to the island then reverted to the Duke of Athole, whose maternal grandmother was daughter of the seventh Earl of Derby. In 1736, on the death of the tenth Lord Derby, the sovereignty of the little Island of Man passed accordingly to the Athole family." [S Walpole]
From 1737 to 1741 sat in Parliament both as English Baron and as a Scottish representative peer.
Fled south during the 1745 rebellion, his elder, attainted, brother took possession of Blair castle (and later died during imprisonment in the tower of London); however James then joined the Duke of Cumberland and moved northwards with him in 1746 and in February summoned his vassals to join the King's army.
Resigned office of privy seal in April 1763 when appointed lord justice general; died at Dunkeld 8 Jan 1764.
Married twice: first marriage to Jean, widow of James Lennoy of Hammersmith and youngest daughter of Thomas Frederick. By her had 2 sons, both of whom died in infancy, and two daughters Jean (who married John first earl of Crawford) and Charlotte.
Second marriage was to Jane, daughter of John Drummond of Megginch, by whom there was no issue.
As Charlotte survived her elder sister the Barony of Strange and the sovereignty of the Isle of Man descended via her, to her cousin and husband John, 3rd Duke of Athol.
With regard to his attitude towards his newly acquired Island , Spencer Walpole is very complementary:
He showed the interest which he took in his new possession by at once announcing his intention of visiting it, and of coming at a time which would enable him to be present at the annual Tynwald; and he was not discouraged by the unfriendliness of the winds, which forced him, like Duckenfield in the previous century, to seek shelter at Holyhead, and which thus protracted over six days a journey which is now accomplished in four hours. The Duke on his arrival was received by the Governor and his officers with all the state which the Island could afford, and was greeted with addresses of welcome from all classes of the people. His first Tynwald revived the splendours of the old court. The Duke was escorted to it by " three squadrons of horse militia, one bay, the second black, the third grey, well mounted and armed, commanded by their officers, and with their drums and standards, in the latter of which were embroidered the arms of the Isle;" on the hill the Bishop did homage, the officers of the Lord's Council were sworn; and at the conclusion three "great huzzas were made by the whole spectators, waving their hats in the air, and a general volley from all the militia and soldiery followed." And the, conduct of the Duke justified the warmth of the reception. He stayed in the island for some weeks, long enough to sanction fourteen Acts, or rather fourteen sections of one Act, which has sometimes been styled the Manx Bill of Rights.
....
The first of the Atholes had thus supplemented the legislation of the last of the Stanleys. The one ruler had given the people fixity of tenure; the other had curbed the power of the ecclesiastical courts, had regulated civil judicature, and had placed the sole power of taxation in the hands of the Legislature. The Atholes were destined, in the course of the next eighty years, to lose the popularity which they had acquired in the Island. They were said, and perhaps with reason, to think too much of their own rights and too little of their people's interests. But, if Manxmen knew the history of their own Island, they would at any rate except the first reigning Duke of the House from these censures. He, at least, celebrated his accession by signing an Act worthy to be bound in the same volume with the great charter of the last of the Derbys.
Blair Atholl Perth and Kinross Blair Castle, Blair Atholl ©Gazetteer for Scotland
A village in highland Perth and Kinross, situated at the junction of the Tilt and Garry rivers 34 miles north of the city of Perth. The village, which has hotels, camping and caravan facilities and a 9-hole golf course, is well situated for walks into the Grampians via Glen Tilt, the Minigaig Pass and Old Struan Path. Tourist attractions include a working corn mill, a country museum and the imposing white-harled Blair Castle which dates from the 13th century.
The castle, which is the seat of the Murray Dukes of Atholl, has played host to many historic figures including Mary Queen of Scots, Edward III of England, the Marquis of Montrose, Prince Charles Edward Stuart and Queen Victoria. Graham of Claverhouse, who occupied the castle in 1689 and was killed nearby at the Battle of Killiecrankie, lies buried in the ruined church of St Brides at Old Blair which overlooks the castle. In the 1870s the present facade of the castle was created when the former Atholl House was remodelled and extended in the Scots-Baronial style by the Edinburgh architect David Bryce who was commissioned by the 7th Duke of Atholl.
In 1745, during the second Jacobite Rising, Blair Castle was the last castle in Britain to be besieged. Britain's only 'private army', the Atholl Highlanders, holds parades from time to time at the castle.

Douglas Douglas-Hamilton
In 1933 Squadron-Leader Douglas Douglas-Hamilton (1903-1973, later 14th Duke of Hamilton & Brandon) led a team of aviators in one of the greatest adventures of the decade - the first flight over the hostile, dangerous and largely-unknown Mount Everest.
Just after 8am on 3rd April 1933, two Westland single-engined biplanes fitted with supercharged Pegasus engines, one of them piloted by Douglas, took off from Lalbalu airfield near Purnea in Northeast India. From there it was 257 kilometres to Mount Everest, and the two-man crews of pilot and observer-photographer had to wear cumbersome, electrically-heated suits, goggles, gauntlets and India-rubber oxygen masks. After half an hour the Himalayas came into sight, and minutes later Everest itself hoved into view. Battling through ferocious air currents and mighty downdrafts, Douglas' aircraft passed over the peak of Everest at 10.05am, clearing it by 152 metres. The experience was so heady that, after arriving back at Purnea at 11.25am, Douglas and his fellow crewmen were at first unable to give a coherent account of the record-breaking flight. However, when the news finally broke they became international heroes.
Eight years later, and having succeeded to his dukedom, Douglas was in the headlines once more. Rudolf Hess, Hitler's deputy, flew to Scotland on 10th May 1941 on a personal "peace" mission and asked to be taken to the Scottish peer, whom he believed could act as intermediary. In the event, the Duke turned Hess over to the authorities, who later imprisoned him.
