SELKIRK, EARL OF (1771-1820), was a Scottish colonizer who opened the Canadian West for settlement during the early 1800's. He founded the Red River Colony, the first permanent settlement in what is now Manitoba (see MANITOBA [The Red River Colony]).

Selkirk, whose given and family name was Thomas Douglas, was born on St. Mary's Isle in Kirkcudbrightshire (now Dumfries and Galloway Region), Scotland. He became the fifth Earl of Selkirk in 1799.

In 1803 and 1804, Selkirk sent about 900 Scottish peasants to settle in the Canadian colonies of Prince Edward Island and Upper Canada. He established the Red River Colony in 1812 with about 100 people. But the farming colony interfered with the local fur trade. In 1815, trappers of the North West Company, a fur-trading firm, and a group of metis (people of mixed white and Indian ancestry) drove out the settlers. Troops led by Selkirk regained control of the colony in 1817.

Thomas DOUGLAS-HAMILTON

As Earl of Selkirk he used his privileged position to help those who were not so fortunate. In 1792, aged 21, his social conscience was roused when he toured the highlands of Scotland and discovered the poverty in which the majority of the population lived. He decided that this situation could only be cured by mass emigration overseas and, in 1802, he began campaigning for an official initiative to colonise the Red River Valley in Manitoba, Canada. When the government expressed no interest in his plans, Douglas determined to carry out the scheme himself. Instead of the Red River, he secured a grant of Crown lands on Prince Edward Island off the east coast of Canada and in 1803 settled 800 Scotsmen there.

COLONISTS

The Prince Edward Island colony proved a success, but Douglas had not abandoned his original idea of settling the Red River Valley. By 1811, he had acquired control of the Hudson Bay Company and obtained the grant of a vast tract of Red River Land - 45 million acres in all. In the autumn of that year, Douglas sent out his first party of colonists, and further groups followed in 1812 and 1814. Others, however, had a vested interest in the Red River Valley, and the Northwest Fur Company, in particular, regarded the new settlements as a threat to their profits. Accordingly, it attacked Douglas' colony in 1816, forcing the colonists to surrender. The Company finished the job by destroying the Red River settlement and burning its crops. Douglas retaliated by seizing the Company's chief post at Fort William on Lake Superior and appropriating its stores. In 1818, the Earl was fined £2000 for ruining the Company's trade. These troubles eventually proved too much for the Earl to bear and his health deteriorated. He returned to England towards the end of 1818, and later died in Pau in southern France on 8th April 1820. However,, his life's work did not go unrecognised. In 1821, the Scottish settlers in Canada agreed a peace and Manitoba went on to become a thriving province, with the town and county of Selkirk being named after the 5th Earl.
