Her sister, Kate, named their first born "Sallie Marie Downing", obviously in honor of Sallie Marie Dowell. When searching the 1880 census for Barton county, Kansas, I find Sallie Dowell listed in Kansas with her sister's family (Benjamin and Kate Downing). How lon she spent in Kansas is unknown; she does not appear in any 1900 census for Kansas to the best of my knowledge. The book, "Dowell", states she died back i Calvert county, Maryland, and is buried in a local cemetery there.

I am more inclined to accept that documentation, thus, have so entered it in this database as "Ellsworth" is a masculine name. The matter remains questionable.

George Washington Dowell's name was first learned through the death certificate of his daughter, Kate E. Dowell Downing. Correspondence with the Calvert county, MD, Genealogy Newsletter on September 5, 1998, resulted in obtaining th booklet, "Dowell", by Mildred O'Brien (1998). The book has the entire family line.

Biographical information, however, is sketchy. George Dowell was a farmer. He had five wives; four of them preceeded George i death. The 1870 census for Prince Frederick, Calvert co., MD, shows George and his las wife with Sallie Marie and the four surviving children of his last marriage.
