Francis was found on the Social Security Death Index on June 20, 1998. His social security number, issued in 1955, was 444-38-3204, issued in Oklahoma. From Bertha Downing, Medford, OK:  "Elwanda Fortmeyer is a daughter, and she is at 512 S. Osage, Caldwell, KS 67022 (316) 845-6681."  His Social Security application, obtained on April 29, 1999, shows him living in Caldwell, Kansas, in June, 1955. On January, 2000, Elwanda (Downing) Fortmeyer sent a most thorough listing of the descendent families of Francis B. Downing, along with photographs. Data provided by her was entered into the computer on February 5, 2000.

Francis does not appear on the 1870 census with the family group.   Listed i the obituary for his brother, Benjamin, is "F. M. Downing, of Warren, PA".[Downing.ged]

Francis does not appear on the 1870 census with the family group. Listed i the obituary for his brother, Benjamin, is "F. M. Downing, of Warren, PA". Francis has proven most elusive, as he appears to have remained in Pennsylvania when the family moved to Kansas in 1877. The first solid information I obtained on Francis came in an e-mail on November 18, 2000, from Marilyn Downing Grissom, granddaughter of Thomas Ellsworth Downing,  She stated that her memory indicates that Francis remained in Pennsylvania all his life, married, and had one daughter.  He was buried in Pennsylvania.  When the copy of her family papers were received, it also indicated Francis' death date.  Death certificate ordered from Pennsylvania Vital Records on November 25, 2000.

From "Chester County and its People", 1898: "Drowned in Mill Race".

Note that his death date is August 10, the middle of summer.  One can conjure u a picture of a five-year old, sweating from the August heat, taking a cool swim in the Mill Race (an artificial channel of water providing power for the mill), and getting in over his head.  Tragedies often make the most interesting history.  RD[Downing.ged]
