CHESTER & DELAWARE FEDERALIST May 16, 1810 "Marriage at Friends' Meeting on Fifth day, the 10th inst., Robert Sharples, of Delaware county, to Eliza Downing, daughter of Jacob Downing, of Philadelphia." DELAWARE COUNTY REPUBLICAN November 6, 1840 "Real Estate Public Sale - Pursuant to the last will and testament of ELIZABETH DOWNING, dec., will be exposed to public sale, on the premises, on Third day, the 8th of the 12th month next, at 2 o P.M., a valuable FARM, late her property situate in Newtown township, Delaware county, about a mile north of the West Chester and Philadelphia road, and 15 miles from teh latter place; bounded by lands of William Hibberd, Robert Lewis and others, containing 135 acres, about 30 of which is woodland. The improvements are a HOUSE, part of stone, a double floored stone Barn, 34 by 45 feet, of modern construction, having been built within the last 20 years, a never failing spring is within a few perch of the dwelling, over which is erected a convenient stone house, a well of good water is within a few feet of the mansion, with a pump therein; there is an orchard o from 40 to 50 trees which appear in a healthy state. This property is certainl an object worthy the attention of enterprising agriculturists; the natural quality of the soil is believed to be equal to any in its vicinity, and is susceptible of easy and rapid improvement. It is within 5 miles of lime, which can be conveyed over a good road leading from the Paoli to Beaumont tavern, and is four miles distant from the Pennsylvania Railroad, upon which lime believed to be of the best quality for land, taken from the south side of the Great Valley, may be delivered at the Paoli at a reasonable rate per bushel. The far being convenient to Philadelphia, makes it desirable as a dairy farm, the business of which is believed to have been profitably carried on. It is situated in a healthy neighborhood, convenient to mills, schools, and places of public worship of different denominations. Any person wishing to view the property will be shown the same by Thomas Curl, living thereon. Conditions at sale. Charles Downing, Joshua B. Sharpless, Executors, Downingtown, 11th mo. 6 1840."

Downing of Scandia, Kansas, which occurred the 24th ult. Mr. Downing had long been a resident of this locality. He came to this city in 1842, and was well known hereabouts. He moved to Kansas some two years ago and at that time was laboring under the first stages of consumption, which was the cause of his death."

Surname appears as "GREEN" in two locations in the listing of LDS members, Vol XIV. That same volume states:

"James and Margaret were married by Joseph Smith". In 1860, Margaret had a household of 4 and a personal wealth of $150 (1860 Utah Federal Census)

Somehow, between 1860 and the 1880's, Margaret removed to Scandia, Republic County, Kansas, with two sons, John B. and Stephen A. Douglas Downing. Information from Del Jeardoe (djeardoe@nckcn.com) follows:

"M. P. Downing owned land two miles south and one west of Scandia, Kansas, in 1883. This is according to the 1883 Atlas that I have. (S)he owned the SW Quarter of section 20 consisting of approx. 13.80 acres in Scandia Township. the west side of this property was along the Republican River. It should have been some pretty good farmland. J & D (John and Douglas) Downing, from my 1904 Atlas, owned the same piece of land plus another 240 acres on the west side of the above property. The southwest quarter of section 19 and the south half of the northeast quarter of section 19. I would guess that they probably had some very good farmland from what I know of that area."[Downing.ged]

General Notes for Child George W. Downing

[18401.ged]

From the "Genealogy of the Palmer-Trimble Families": He went to Nebraska in 1879 where he was married. He is now a licensed Rocky Mountain guide, where h has been (1908) for 29 years. He guides tourists through the Yellowstone National Park, and hunters of big game all through the mountains." Address: Ishawood, Wyoming Apparently he retired shortly after that was written, as he appears in the 1910 census for Scandia Township, Republic county, Kanas, as living with his brother, John B. Downing.[Downing.ged]

General Notes for Child John B. Downing

[18401.ged]

"Genealogy of the Palmer-Trimble Families", page 938: "Resides on the homestead, three miles from Scandia, Republic County, Kansas, with his brother, D.A.Downing, which they jointly own." A review of the 1910 census was painful, as the enumerator wrote so very lightly it could barely be read. However, it shows John B. Downing in Scandia Township, Republic county, KS, with a wife, son, daughter, and his brother, George Downing. I was unable to read the names of the wife, son, or daughter.

Note: D.A.Downing is Stephen A. Douglas Downing (q.v.) See also notes under mother, Margaret Pierce (Gheen) Downing.

From internet correspondent Alice Parcel (jimaliceparcel@email.msn.com) "A. G. MULLER Funeral Register" 127 - Name: Ray Downing Residence: Maize, Kansas Age at time of death: 6 months 15 days Cause: Lung and Brain Fever Physician: Hudson Died: March 17, 1897 Buried: March 18, 1897 Place of Burial: Maize Cemetery BT (?) John B. Downing. This information would indicate that John B. Downing had a son, Ray, who died young in Maize, Kansas.[Downing.ged]

General Notes (Husband)

[18401.ged]

Genealogy of the Palmer-Trimble Families, Page 690: "John Roberts was a miller. He probably resided in the Great Valley, Chester County, PA, and also in Merion, Montgomery County, PA. He lost his life by reason of his adherence to the British cause during the Revolutionary War. He was taken prisoner whilst the British army occupied Philadelphia, 1777-78, and charged with acts inimical to the American cause, in which times of heated passions the calm and wise judgement was lost sight of in the struggle for success. Great efforts were made to save his life by his neighbors and friends, near and far, all petitioning in his behalf as a good citizen and conscientious man, but mistaken in his course. But it all did not avail and he suffered the extreme penalty of martial law."[Downing.ged]

General Notes (Wife)

[18401.ged]

Jane Downing, eldest daughter of Thomas, was born on July 27, 1761. Her sister, Mary Downing, the next born in that family, was born on October 14, 1763. Three sources, including the "History of Chester County", 1881, confirm that these two sisters died on the same date, June 20, 1813. Jane was 51 years old; Mary, 49. Both deaths occurred in West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Research has failed to show any widespread disaster in Chester County on that date. The intreguing question remains: What did these two middle-aged sisters die of on the same date? Fire? Drowning? Coincidence? These are the things that make genealogical research so very fascinating.[Downing.ged]

The likely answer, however, is disease....either smallpox, diptheria, or one of those formerly dreaded illnesses that modern science has conquered.

General Notes (Wife)

[18401.ged]

Here's an interesting mystery. Eleanor Mason, wife of Thomas Downing, Jr., died at the age of 31 on August 20, 1836. Her son, Robert Valentine Downing, age 11, died on the same date. And her daughter, Jane Hoops Downing, not quite six years old, died 18 days later on September 8, 1836. The deaths occurred in Chester County, Pennsylvania. It would be difficult to place these deaths in the category of natural causes. The father, Thomas Downing, survived whatever befell this family, living another 15 years until 1851.

Let your imagination solve the mystery.[Downing.ged]
