General Notes (Husband)

[18401.ged]

John Downing was born in Lancaster county, PA, about 1783. He was raised in a strict Quaker environment, and sometimes after 1788 his parents left Lancaste county, later living in Frederick county, VA. In 1807 he was married to Abigail White, daughter of Deborah Lee White and granddaughter of Anthony and Abigail Lee, who were also Quakers. John and Abigail "married contrary to discipline" and were dismissed from the Quaker religion of their childhood. After their marriage, John and Abigail Downing farmed in Berkely county, VA, where their ten children were born. Berkeley county was a part of Virginia at the time, but was separated into West Virginia when West Virginia was created as a state in 1862. Berkeley county, WV, adjoins Frederick county, VA. In 1831 the family left Berkeley county, moved to Clark county, Ohio, for a brief period, moved to Elkhart county, Indiana, for a period, then to Henry county, Iowa. by 1840 the family was settled in Iowa. The family is listed there in the 1840 census. Before his death, John and his family moved south into the next county, Jefferson, where at least four of his sons had acquired land and were farmers. A listing of the original land entries for Jefferson county, Iowa, shows the lands acquired by John Downing's sons. It must have been discouraging to the father, William, to see his children deserting their Quaker religion. Over the years, John, Mary, and Phoebe were all dismissed from the membership for marrying "contrary to discipline". Sarah was called before the meeting to answer testimony against her.[Downing.ged]

Recorts of Helen F. Snow, genealogist: "John Downing became a tavern keeper about 1760 and after several years was succeeded by Richard Cheyney at the Sign of the Kin in Arms, where the Revolutionary county committee met in 1776." Pennypacker says John was a taver keeper from 1761 to 1771. The King at Arms became the Washington Inn, which wa still owned by a Downing descendant, Clara Fox, when I visited her. In 1764 Richard was assessed in E. Caln with 190 acres, "His tax was L6:3:3, being the largest in the township, and his brother John was next below him."

From "Chester County and Its People", by W. W. Thomson, 1898: "John Downing continued to reside at Downingtown, where in 1764, he was assessed with two hundred and forty acres of land and buildings, tavern, etc., worth 100 pounds per annum; sixty acres of uncultivated land, five horses, six cattle, thirteen sheep, and one servant. He was a tavernkeeper from 1761 to 1771, at the eatern tavern on the Lancaster Road, then or subsequently called the "King in Arms," and later, the Washington Inn."[Downing.ged]

An interesting newspaper article from "The Pennsylvania Gazette", May 2, 1765:
"Went away, on the 24th of April, from the house of JOHN DOWNING, Tavern keeper, in East Caln Township, Chester county, one John Smith, of swarthy complexion, marked with the smallpox, about five feet nine inches high; had on when he went away, a Swanskin jacket, and a brown lincey one under it; he stole a new broadcloth jacket, of a grey colour, a new pair of breeches, one pair of stockings, and a beaver hat, lined with white; he is well known all over America. Whoever takes up and secures said Smith, shall have three pounds reward, and reasonable charges paid by Godfrey Richards." In another instance, John placed the following ad in the same paper, December 12, 1765:
"Came to the plantation of John Downing in East Caln Township, Chester county about the 18th day of November last, two stray creatures, a horse and a mare, the horse is of a black colour, a natural pacer, and has neither brand nor ear mark, about 12 years old; the mare a dark bay, has a bald face, paces and trots neither brand nor ear mark, about 6 years old. The owner or owners are desired to come and prove their property, pay charges, and take them away."

Hunt Downing an old and respectable inhabitant of the Great Valley, died at his residence in West Whiteland on Friday last. He had been much in active life; a public house keeper, an extensive Stage Proprietor, and a Director of the Bank of Chester county, until about two years since, when infirmities brought on by increasing age, induced him very wisely to resign his situation as Director, and lessen hi business responsibilities. The companieon of his early life, and his tender solace under the weight of affliction, was taken from him about two months since; for some time previous to which he was afflicted with a paralysis, which unfitted him for active life. He has gone to bourne whence no traveller return - at a ripe old age - and the recollections of his kindness and his usefulness will be pleasing to his family and numerous friends." The "Hunt Downing House" still exists, and is on the registry of historical buildings. It is located at 600 W. Lincoln Hwy., Exton, Chester co., PA. The Gregath book indicates "he served in 2nd Co., 2nd Battalion, Philadelphia Militia under Lt. Col. James Read and Capt. George Engels. In 1790 liv East Caln,Chester Co., PA. "Genealogy of the Palmer-Trimble Families", page 938: "Resides on the homestead, three miles from Scandia, Republic County, Kansas, with his brother, D.A.Downing, which they jointly own." A review of the 1910 census was painful, as the enumerator wrote so very lightly it could barely be read. However, it shows John B. Downing in Scandia Township, Republic county, KS, with a wife, son, daughter, and his brother, George Downing. I was unable to read the names of the wife, son, or daughter.

Note: D.A.Downing is Stephen A. Douglas Downing (q.v.) See also notes under mother, Margaret Pierce (Gheen) Downing.

However, the City of Anthony maintained a ledger book recording deaths in their jurisdiction in years prior to that. On my May, 1999, trip to Anthony, I viewed the ledger and found Mary's name entered, with a cause of death as cardiac failure. The ledge is in the Anthony City Hall. Two obituaries were also found in the Anthony newspapers on microfilm. "Memories from Ruth Naomi Downing Simanek", dau. of Thomas Ellsworth Downing, notes the following about Mary: "I saw her once, but I was small and all I remember about her, she was a small woman."

E in the 49th regimen of Pennsylvania Volunteers, in the war of 1861 for the suppression of the Rebellion.
That he was commissioned at Brandy Station, in the State of Virginia, on o about the 1st day of January, 1864, and was honorably discharged at Petersburg VA, on the 1st day of March, 1865, and he has not been in the U.S. military or naval service since.
That while in said service in the line of his duty at Spottsylvania, in the state of Virginia, on or about the 12th day of May, 1864, he was injured i left leg and left side by a solid shot striking a piece of timber throwing it against him while acting as Adjuant in action for which he was treated at U.S. general hospital Fredericksburg, VA, and U.S. general Hospital, Washington, D.C.." He was granted a pension of $30 per month. On his death in 1908, his wif applied for a Widow's Pension, which was granted at $12. per month.
Death certificate lists his address as 614 N. Waco St., Wichita, Kansas.

Benjamin removed from Chester county, PA, to Great Bend, Barton county, Kansas, in 1877 and remained there until 1883. A search of the 1880 census for Barton county finds him and his family living in Union Township; occupation Farmer. A surprise find located his signature at the top of the census sheet - Benjamin was the census Enumerator for his district! In 1883, he removed to Wichita, Sedgwick county, Kansas, where he spent the remainder of his life. Cutler's "History of Kansas" notes a major smallpox epidemic in Great Bend in 1883, leading one to wonder if that was the impetus for his removal to Wichita. According to the Kansas Genealogical Society publication, "Treesearcher", 1984, Benjamin was a member of the Garfield Post #25, Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), Wichita. The post was organized on June 27, 1884. Benjamin served as Post Commander during 1887. Wife Kate was a charter member of the women's auxiliary, and daughter Sallie Marie was a member of the auxilary. On the 1900 U.S. Census for Wichita, his occupation was then listed as "Police Clerk". At the time of his death in 1908, he was the Commissioner of Elections for the City of Wichita, and had previously served on the City Council. He died a week after casting his vote for William Howard Taft for president, according to an obituary. Earlier in Wichita he had been in the construction business, and apparently he and his brothers built some of the early buildings in Wichita in what is now downtown. Benjamin's grave marker in Maple Grove Cemetery, Wichita, simply shows his name and dates of birth and death; there is no indication of his Civil War service. In July, 1999, Raymond and David Downing, great-grandsons, provided funds to Maple Grove Cemetery to have a bronze Civil War marker and flag holder installed at the head of his existing grave marker. This was done in the summe of 1999; see photo of same in the media files.

General Notes for Child Susan R. Downing

[18401.ged]

Susan appears in the 1870 census with her family in East Nantmeal Twp. That census lists her occupation as "Dress maker". She also appears in the obituary for her brother, Benjamin Henry Downing, as "Mrs. Susan Storey, of Anthony, KS".[Downing.ged]

Susan appears in the 1870 census with her family in East Nantmeal Twp. That census lists her occupation as "Dress maker". She also appears in the obituary for her brother, Benjamin Henry Downing, as "Mrs. Susan Storey, of Anthony, KS". I have been unable to locate her in the Harper county census reports. On my 1999 Kansas trip, I found her listed in the records of Forest Park cemetery, Anthony, Harper co., with her husband, Thomas Storey. Thomas was the brother of John Storey, husband of Ella S. Downing. The two sisters married tw brothers. Photo of the gravesite was taken on May 3, 1999. An Obituary was located in the "Anthony Republican" dated February 23, 1912:
"Mrs. Thomas Storey, after years of suffering from dropsy and other troubles died suddenly at her home on North Jennings avenue (Anthony) Sunday morning. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church Monday afternoon by Rev. R. A. Dadisman; interment in Forest Park cemetery.
"Born Susan R. Downing in Chester county, PA, March 29, 1845, she removed with her family to near Bayneville, Sedgwick county, KS, in 1877, where she married Thomas Storey Oct. 21, 1881. Four children were born to them, two dyin in infancy, two daughters, Carrie D. Story and Mrs. Kate E. Hoopes, with the husband, survive her.
"They removed to Harper county near Freeport in 1885 where they lived until the removal to Anthony a few years ago. Mrs. Storey was converted to the Methodist faith in 1907, but her health has been so precarious she had not undertaken full fellowship." Susan's death certificate was obtained on August 17, 1999. It shows the cause of her death at age 66 as kidney failure. An interesting point: her younger sister, Ella, also died of kidney failure. The certificate shows her address as 710 N. Jennings, Anthony, Kansas, and the information on the certificate was provided by her daughter, Carrie. This certificate also provided me with the correct middle name of Susan's father, John Benjamin Downing. A long search ended!

General Notes for Child Josephine Elizabeth Downing

[18401.ged]

The 1870 census, East Nantmeal Township, Chester county, PA, shows the family group. Josephine E. Downing's occupation is listed as "Teaches School".

An 1886 map of Silver Creek Township, Harper County, Kansas, shows a landowner of 160 acres deeded to "J. E. Downing". I belive this to be Josephine, daughter of John B. Downing and Mary Couch Downing, apparently deede to Josephine after Johns death in 1878.

Entries on the land deeds for the Silver Creek Township farm show her married name as indicated, "Glissman". However, the obituary from The Wichita Daily Eagle of her brother, Benjamin, shows her as "Mrs. Josephine Glasford, of Harper, KS".[Downing.ged]

The handwriting is very clear on the dee records at the Anthony courthouse. However, the obituary from The Wichita Daily Eagle of her brother, Benjamin, shows her as "Mrs. Josephine Glasford, of Harper, KS". The surname can be resolved, however, by the finding of her grave marker in Forest Park Cemetery, Anthony, Harper county, Kansas. The name was Glessner. Short obituary from the "Anthony Republican" :
"At the advanced age of eighty years, Mrs. Josephine Glessner died at her home, 224 South Chatauqua, Wichita, Sunday evening of this week and her remains were brought here Tuesday for a funeral service and burial. For a number of years, Mrs. Glessner had been making her home with a sister, Miss Carrie Downing, and many readers will remember that those ladies resided in Anthony on North Jennings avenue for seven or more years and moved from here to Wichita about eleven years ago. The deceased lady is a sister of Winfield S. Downing and an aunt of Mrs. Melvin S. Hoopes, both of this city. A funeral service was held at the Methodist church at one o'clock Tuesday, conducted by Rev. G. L. Coppedge, and she now rests beside the remains of her husband in Forest Park Cemetery." There were no children of this marriage.

General Notes for Child Francis M.L. Downing

Francis does not appear on the 1870 census with the family group. Listed i the obituary for his brother, Benjamin, is "F. M. Downing, of Warren, PA". Francis has proven most elusive, as he appears to have remained in Pennsylvania when the family moved to Kansas in 1877. The first solid information I obtained on Francis came in an e-mail on November 18, 2000, from Marilyn Downing Grissom, granddaughter of Thomas Ellsworth Downing, She stated that her memory indicates that Francis remained in Pennsylvania all his life, married, and had one daughter. He was buried in Pennsylvania. When the copy of her family papers were received, it also indicated Francis' death date. Death certificate ordered from Pennsylvania Vital Records on November 25, 2000.

General Notes for Child William Charles Downing

[Downing.ged]

Death certificate of wife (Ida) was signed by one Carl Downing, relationship uncertain at this time. Obituary from the "Anthony Republican":
"W. C. Downing died at his home in Pilot Knob Township Wednesday, July 25th after a long and lingering illness. He suffered from a cancer of the stomach, and was a patient sufferer. He was about 55 years old. He had been a resident of Pilot Knob Township for the past ten years and was highly esteemed by all those who knew him.
"Funeral services were held at the U. B. Church 8 miles southeast of here and the remains were interred in the Freeport cemetery. The surviving relative have the sympathy of the community." On May 3, 1999, I visited the Freeport cemetery for the second time to re-photograph the gave markers. After taking the desired pictures, a car parke behind mine, and three women got out and entered the cemetery. Surprised to se anyone in this "middle of nowhere" location, I watched them as they walked up t the grave marker of William C. Downing. They stopped at the monument. I got out of my car and asked if they were related to him. One, who turned out to be Verla Downing DeJarrett, of Wellington, KS, replied, "Yes, he's my great grandfather." I then told her that her great grandfather (William) and my grea grandfather (Benjamin) were brothers. I then explained the relationship among the other Downings buried in that cemetery. Subsequent correspondence has ensued. This amazing event, beyond all reasonable probability, took place on a late Sunday afternoon, in a deserted cemetery, near an empty ghost town. It defies explanation.

General Notes for Child Joseph R. Downing

[18401.ged]

Genealogy of the Palmer-Trimble Families, page 939: Address: Wichita, Kansas Note: "J.R.Downing" signed the death certificate of Benjamin Henry Downing; apparently he witnessed the certificate of his brother. He is also listed in Benjamin's obituary in The Wichita Daily Eagle, with the address of 1203 Waco Ave., Wichita.

In the Last Will and Testament of his unmarried sister, Carrie Halstead Downing a bequeathment states: "To my beloved brother, Joseph R. Downing, the sum of $700." The will is dated May 9, 1930; thus it would appear Joseph R. Downing was alive at the time the will was prepared.[Downing.ged]

His death date was provided by Marilyn Grissom, grandaughter of Thomas Ellsworth Downing. Death certificate ordered 11-25-00. The family papers that Marilyn provided me with indicate that Joseph's first marriage to Emily Butler ended when Emily died in childbirth. The child also died. They are buried in the Maize Cemetery, Maize, Sedgwick county, Kansas. It also indicates that Joseph is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Wichita, but the records of Maple Grove do not support that statement.

General Notes for Child Julia Ida Downing

[18401.ged]

Genealogy of the Palmer Trimble Families, page 939: Lists name as Ida Julia

She appears in the obituary for her brother, Benjamin, in 1908, as "Ida Downing Pontusa, Illinois".[Downing.ged]

Genealogy of the Palmer Trimble Families, page 939: Lists name as Ida Julia. Name appears as Ida on the marriage license obtained from the Illinois Regional Archives, 12-6-00. She appears in the obituary for her brother, Benjamin, in 1908, as "Ida Downing Pontusa, Illinois". Her eight children seem to be well documented. However, a family history provided by Marilyn (Downing) Grissom, granddaughter of Thomas E Downing, indicates there were no children, and that she and her husband are buried in Pennsylvania. Shows husband's name as Ott Lamb. Based on the name "Ida Downing" appearing on the marriage certificate, I reversed the name from Julia Ida in December, 2000.

General Notes for Child Sarah Ellen Downing

[18401.ged]

Genealogy of the Palmer Trimble families: Page 940: Lists name as Ellie Sarah. Also: "In addition to those listed in this family had four children, all deceased as of 1910, names not known." The four children wh died young were found in the internet on April 19, 1998. They were:

Elmer B. Storey 1886 - 1886 Sue R. Storey 1890 - 1891 Mabel G. Storey 1892 - 1894 Bennie Storey 1882 - 1884 (Go to multimedia for photos of the above four gravesites in Freeport, KS)

The Last Will and Testament of Carrie Halstead Downing bequeaths the following: "To my beloved sister, Sallie Ellie Storey, the sum of $500.00." The will is dated May 9, 1930.

The variety of names is noted. Her grave marker in Freeport Cemetery, Harper County, Kansas, shows "Ella S. Storey". The 1910 census shows her in Berlin Township, Harper County, KS, also as Ella S. Storey".

An article in the Anthony "The Republican" newspaper, under "Freeport Notes", reprinted in the "Harper County Connections" states the following: "Mrs. J. Storey is quite sick. Mamie and Edna are just recovering from sickness."

Obituary notice received from the Harper County Historical Society, Feb 13, 1998:

" (1943) WINFIELD S. DOWNING Passed away Feb 13 at the age of 80. Came to Harper County 58 years ago in 1885.

Funeral services for Winfield S. Downing, old-time resident of Harper County who passed away Feb. 13, were held last Monday afternoon at the Parsons funeral home, with Rev. L. O. McCracken and Rev. Paul Cook as the officiating ministers. Interment was in the Freeport Cemetery. The obituary gives these facts: Winfield S. Downing was born at Westchester, PA, June 2, 1862. H came with his parents to Sedgwick county, Kansas, in 1877, and to Harper County Kansas in 1885, where he has lived continuously with the exception of six years after he made the 'run' into Oklahoma. On Nov. 3, 1891, he was united in marriage to Miss Ada Watkins, o Freeport. He became a Christian early in life and had been a member of the Anthony Baptist church since 1923. He is survived by his widow, Ada; and by on son, Joseph; also a brother, George; and by one granddaughter."

The last will and testament of his sister, Carrie Halstead Downing, bequeaths the following: "To my beloved brother, Winfield S. Downing, the sum of $900.00." The will is dated May 9, 1930.

General Notes for Child Carrie Halsted Downing

[18401.ged]

Genealogy of the Palmer-Trimble Families, page 940: Address: Anthony, Kansas Probably died unmarried. Obituary makes no note of a spouse or children, and she still used her maiden name. A most interesting will is in the hard copy file dated May 9 1931. The obituary of her brother in 1908 (Benjamin) states "Carri Downing, of Freeport".[Downing.ged]

Genealogy of the Palmer-Trimble Families, page 940: Address: Anthony, Kansas Unmarried. Death certificate shows place of death as Wesley Hospital, Wichita, Kansas. Occupation: Housekeeper, 50 years. Address: 227 S. Chautauqua, Wichita. Cause of death: Lobor Pneumonia; 6 days onset.Informant for death certificate info was Mrs. G. W. Downing, 2420 E. 8th street.
A most interesting will is in the hard copy file dated May 9 1931. The obituary of her brother in 1908 (Benjamin) states "Carrie Downing, of Freeport" Carrie Downing is buried in the Freeport Cemetery, Freeport, Harper county, Kansas, adjacent to the grave markers of her parents, John B. and Mary C. Downing. Her will provided $900.00 for perpetual care of the graves. Every Memorial Day, a floral arrangement is placed at the main marker. See media files for the 1998 placement. Carrie, according to her neice, Ruth Naomi Downing, was known to the family as "Aunt Kad". Her oral history notes that Carrie made the 1893 homesteading run into the Cherokee Strip of Oklahoma and claimed a quarter section, but apparently later sold it to her brother Thomas, and returned to Kansas. The land was near Renfro, Grant county, Oklahoma.

General Notes for Child Thomas Ellsworth Downing

[18401.ged]

Genealogy of the Palmer-Trimble Families, page 940: Address: Renfrew, Oklahoma

Thomas E. Downing has his name engraved on the Pioneer settlers monument in Medford,Grant county, Oklahoma. He was in the 1893 land rush on the Cherokee strip. On May 3, 1998, I visited the monument in Medford; the photos are in th media file for Thomas Ellsworth Downing. His name is on top of a column on the back of the monument.

In the Last Will and Testament of his sister, Carrie Halstead Downing, she states: "Seventh:- I hereby direct that $50.00 be paid out of my estate for the erectio of a marker at the grave of my beloved brother, Thomas E. Downing, in the Caldwell Cemetery, and I desire that said marker be erected within one year after my decease." As the will was dated 1931, this confirms that Thomas died prior to that year.

I have not been able to find the cemetery indicated. There is no "Caldwell Cemetery". There are, however, two cemeteries near Caldwell; the Alton and the Doster. It is probable that Thomas is buried in one of these two cemeteries. The 1908 obituary of his brother, Benjamin, in The Wichita Daily Eagle, states, "Thomas Downing, of Caldwell, KS."

The data on the wife and children of Thomas were determined from the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Census for Hickory Township, Grant county, Oklahoma. Copy of both in files. This data was later refined in correspondence with Bertha Downing, of Medford, OK.

The Thomas Downing farm was in the north part of Grant County; the west half of 20-29-5; land they staked in the run of 1893. Thomas died of influenza in the great influenza outbreak following World War I, which killed millions world-wide.[Downing.ged]

General Notes for Child Jane Downing

[18401.ged]

Jane Downing, eldest daughter of Thomas, was born on July 27, 1761. Her sister, Mary Downing, the next born in that family, was born on October 14, 1763. Three sources, including the "History of Chester County", 1881, confirm that these two sisters died on the same date, June 20, 1813. Jane was 51 years old; Mary, 49. Both deaths occurred in West Chester, Chester County, Pennsylvania.

Research has failed to show any widespread disaster in Chester County on that date. The intreguing question remains: What did these two middle-aged sisters die of on the same date? Fire? Drowning? Coincidence? These are the things that make genealogical research so very fascinating.[Downing.ged]

General Notes (Wife)

Grace Stalker descended from the early Downing family, although I have not found the precise relationship. She has a chapter dedicated to her life in "Downingtown Friends Meeting, An Early History of Quakers in the Great Valley", by Francis G. Brown, 1999, which is in my library. Her silhouette pictured her comes from the book; the original hangs in the author's home in Downingtown.
