He is also listed in Benjamin's obituary in The Wichita Daily Eagle, with the address of 1203 Waco Ave., Wichita.
In the Last Will and Testament of his unmarried sister, Carrie Halstead Downing a bequeathment states: "To my beloved brother, Joseph R. Downing, the sum of $700." The will is dated May 9, 1930; thus it would appear Joseph R. Downing was alive at the time the will was prepared.[Downing.ged]

It also indicates that Joseph is buried in Maple Grove Cemetery, Wichita, but the records of Maple Grove do not support that statement.

Smedley Family, pp. 297-298: "He was born in the old log house on the Lancaste Pike, just east of the Brandywine, in Downingtown, and his residence after marriage was a few rods eastward of this. He learned the business of a fuller or cloth manufacturer, which he carried on where Austin Bicking now has a paper mill. In this he wa joined for some years by his brothers, Samuel and Charles, after which he retired and the business was discontinued."

An 1886 map of Silver Creek Township, Harper County, Kansas, shows a landowner of 160 acres deeded to "J. E. Downing". I belive this to be Josephine, daughter of John B. Downing and Mary Couch Downing, apparently deede to Josephine after Johns death in 1878.
Entries on the land deeds for the Silver Creek Township farm show her married name as indicated, "Glissman". However, the obituary from The Wichita Daily Eagle of her brother, Benjamin, shows her as "Mrs. Josephine Glasford, of Harper, KS".[Downing.ged]

The deceased lady is a sister of Winfield S. Downing and an aunt of Mrs. Melvin S. Hoopes, both of this city. A funeral service was held at the Methodist church at one o'clock Tuesday, conducted by Rev. G. L. Coppedge, and she now rests beside the remains of her husband in Forest Park Cemetery." There were no children of this marriage.

Genealogy of the Palmer Trimble Families, page 939: Lists name as Ida Julia. Name appears as Ida on the marriage license obtained from the Illinois Regional Archives, 12-6-00. She appears in the obituary for her brother, Benjamin, in 1908, as "Ida Downing Pontusa, Illinois". Her eight children seem to be well documented. However, a family history provided by Marilyn (Downing) Grissom, granddaughter of Thomas E Downing, indicates there were no children, and that she and her husband are buried in Pennsylvania. Shows husband's name as Ott Lamb. Based on the name "Ida Downing" appearing on the marriage certificate, I reversed the name from Julia Ida in December, 2000.
