Retail Salesman, Cameras, owned camera shop in Grand Rapids, MI. Retail Salesman, Montgomery Wards ; Died from coronary thrombosis suddenly. Veteran, U.S. Army, World War I. Personal recollections of Raymond Downing: Dad was an outstanding photographer, and spent many happy hours developing his own prints, many of which still exist in the family albums I have. He had a darkroom in the basement of the home at 13960 Steel, Detroit, MI. He also was a 16-mm movie film buff, and had a considerable library built up of commercial 16-mm home films, as well as those he photographed himself. I have many of his films converted to video tape in my collection. Discovered on Nov. 23, 1997, in the papers of my mother appears the following document:
STATEMENT OF THE MILITARY SERVICE Of Rudolph Downing, Private, 132nd Ambulance Company, 108th Sanitary Train
The records of this office show that Rudolph Downing enlisted July 24, 1917, at Chicago, Illinois, for Ambulance Company No. 4, Illinois National Guard, subsequently redesignated 132nd Ambulance Company, 108th Sanitary Train, and was discharged January 12, 1918, at Camp Logan, Texas, a Private, on account of minority concealed at enlistment.
Under the provisions of the Act of Congress, approved March 2, 1929 (Public 950, 70th Congress), in the administration of any laws conferring rights, privileges or benefits, upon honorably discharged soldiers of the United States Army, their widows and dependent children, the above-name soldier shall hereafter be held and considered to have been honorably discharged January 12, 1918, but no back pay or allowances shall accrue by reason of this action.

This writer only met Violet Phillip (Katz) once, when I drove her car from Detroit to Las Vegas about 1982 or so. She was moving in with her daughter, Jean Downing Wiley, and the meeting at that time was a pleasant one. The divorce between her and my father, Rudolph, however, was very bitter, from information I've learned.

The existance of Ruth was found in the funeral home information on her mother Ada, provided by William Mortuary, in Anthony, Kansas. The data states:
"Surviving her are her son and daughter-in-law, Joseph and Hazel Downing, one granddaughter, Ruth Downing, 240 N. Topeka, all of Wichita, and many neices, nephews, etc." However, Ruth does not appear as a survivor in the obituary information of either her father or mother. As the father died in 1986, it is likely Ruth died prior to that year.

"She married a Simanek, and Eva Lea Gardner is one of her children. 205 W. Emporia, Ponca City, OK 74601." Ruth was found on the Social Security Death Index on 7-19-98. SS# 442-52-2834. According to the obituary of her brother, Harley, she was living in Uncas, Oklahoma, in 1958. Family files from Marilyn (Downing) Grissom provided a short typewritten oral essay from Ruth as to what she knew of the family. The words of Ruth Naomia Downing, with identifying names in brackets entered by me: "I know that grandma and grandpa {John and Mary Downing} lived in Philadelphia. They moved to Kansas around Freeport and Anthony. My Dad {Thoma Ellsworth Downing} was six years old. All I know is what my mother {Rosa Belle Stephenson Downing} told me. She never told me anything about grandpa {John Downing}. But grandma {Mary Downing} was here. I saw her once, but I was smal and all I remember about her is she was a small woman. They owned a store of some kind.
"There were five girls: Aunt Ell {Sarah Ella Downing Storey}, Sue {Susan Downing Storey}, Phine {Josephine Downing Glessner} and Carrie {Carrie Halstead Downing}, or Kad, as we all knew her. Aunt Ida {Julia Ida Downing Lamb} lived up north in Michigan or some of those states. I knew the other four and saw the many times. Then there was Uncle Frank {?}, Joe {Joseph R. Downing} and I thin two older that I don't remember anything about them. There was Uncle George {George W. Downing}, Uncle Win {Winfield Scott Downing}. I saw them many times and my Dad, Thomas {Thomas Ellsworth Downing}. That would be seven boys.
"The ones who made "the run" {the 1893 land run into the Cherokee Strip of Oklahoma} was Aunt Kad, Uncle George, Uncle Win, and my Dad. They each homesteaded a quarter of land in a plot {quarter-section would be 160 acres}. Two on one side and other two just opposite. Uncle sold his quarter and went back to Wichita.
"My Dad bought Aunt Kad's and Uncle George's and is still in the family. Johnny {?} takes care of it and my nephews farm it. My youngest brother {Harle Downing} got the home place. Some of our family has always farmed Uncle George's place. He always came and stayed with us during threshing. Sometimes Aunt Olive {Olive Alpha Martin Downing, George's wife} and the kid {?} would come."

Appears in 1910 census records for Wichita, Sedgwick County Kansas: Sallie M. 35 Single Occupation: Deputy Election Commission (Roll 1374468) Information from funeral arrangements indicates occupation as "Police Matron", 12 years.
According to the Kansas Genealogical Society publication "Treesearcher", Sallie was a member of the Women's Relief Corps #40, of the Garfield Post #25 of the Grand Army of the Republic (GAR), Wichita. (1921 Roster).
Did not marry. Died of Sepsis (Strep), in St. Francis Hospital, Wichita. Her death certificate (in files) indicates she fractured her left femur in January, 1940, by slipping on the ice, and again in May, 1940, by a fall in the kitchen. Her condition was complicated by diabetes. The sepsis onset was of five days duration prior to her death. Address: 806 Buffam, Wichita, KS. Was apparently living with her sister, Mayme Josephine (Merry) at that address. Mayme's addres was the same at her death in 1951. The information for the death certificate wa provided by Dorothy Alspaugh (dau of Mayme's sister, Emily (Alspaugh) Downing.[Downing.ged]

The information for the death certificate was provided by Dorothy Alspaugh (dau of Mayme's sister, Emily (Alspaugh) Downing.) It would appear that Sallie Marie was named after her mother's younger sister, whose name was Sallie Marie Dowell. She, too, was unmarried; an interesting coincidence. Lengthy obituary from the "Wichita Eagle" in files. Sallie's grave marker in Maple Grove Cemetery, Wichita, is badly weathered by lichen and moss. I attempted to clean it somewhat in May, 2000, with only moderate results. The photo of it in this database was touched up by Adobe Photoshop by me to clarify it.
