"His mother dying shortly after his birth, he was placed with his nurse, Lydia Swiegers, at what is now known as Talcose, West Bradford Twp. After her death he was cared for by his aunt Eliza (Downing) Sharpless, at the Jacob Downing homestead, Downingtown, and his aunt Jane (Smedley) Evans, at the Peter Smedley homestead, Uwchlan. He was educated at Bolmar's School, now known as the Convent, West Chester, and studied conveyancing with his guardian, Thomas Williamson, at 7th and Arch Streets, Philadelphia; being there at the time that Passmore Williamson, son of Thomas, was imprisoned in Moyamensing Jail, charged with the abduction of the Wheeler slave. Subsequently, he became the editor an proprietor of the Chester County Times, a weekly paper published at West Chester, and since merged into the American Republican. He and wife afterward purchased from Elizabeth (Sharpless) Thomas the farm adjoining the Thomas Goodwin homestead, in East Goshen, on which they now reside. The Goodwin homestead, purchased in 1749 by her great-grandfather, Thomas Goodwin, 2d, is still in her possession.
"Samuel R. Downing was a school director for twelve years. At the close of the present term he will have served for fifteen years as member-at-large of th State Board of Agriculture, having been appointed successively by Governors Beaver, Pattison, Hastings (twice) and Stone. He was appointed by Gov. Beaver as one of the State Board of Road Commissioners. For twelve years he served as one of the trustees of the Pennsylvania State College; is still a trustee and a member of the advisory committee of the U.S. Experimental Station located at th college. He is an attendant at Goshen Friends' Meeting, of which hi wife and chidren are members, and calls himself a Lincoln Republican.
"An incident which impressed his mind with the value of family records arose from an examination of the Sharpless Genealogy, published in 1887, and from which family he is descended. Selecting the name of Lydia B. Jones, of Penn, Cass co., Michigan, a distant relative, of whom he had no previous knowledge, h addressed a letter to her, and this led to an interchange of visits, by which h found a colony of living and loving relatives in that distant State."

Early History of the LDS Members, Vol. XIV: "Sarah and Solon were married by Heber C. Kimball."
On November 2, 1997, RD visited the gravesite of Sarah in St. George, Utah, and took the attached photograph. She is buried adjacent to her son, Solon Foster, Jr. When the Mormon exodus took place from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Salt Lake City, Utah, Solon and Sarah accompanied Brigham Young on the initial trip.
Interesting note: Sarah was born into the Quaker faith, and appears in the Quaker records for Pennsylvania births, then converted to the LDS.[Downing.ged]
Early History of the LDS Members, Vol. XIV: "Sarah and Solon were married by Heber C. Kimball." On November 2, 1997, RD visited the gravesite of Sarah in St. George, Utah, and photographed the marker.. She is buried adjacent to her son, Solon Foster, Jr. Interestingly, I could not locate the grave of her husband, Solon Foster, Sr.
When the 1847 Mormon exodus took place from Nauvoo, Illinois, to Salt Lake City, Utah, Solon and Sarah accompanied Brigham Young on the initial trip. Sarah's photo came from the files of the late Helen Foster Snow. Interesting note: Sarah was born into the Quaker faith, and appears in the Quaker records for Pennsylvania births, then converted to the LDS. It appears that all her siblings except for John Benjamin Downing also became Mormons. Copy of 1841 Marriage certificate in files.

Genealogy of the Palmer-Trimble Families, page 940: "In addition to those listed in this family, had four children, all deceased as of 1910."
The gravesites of those four children were found on the Harper County Genealogical internet site on April 19, 1998. They are buried in Freeport Cemetery, Harper County, Kansas, next to their parents. The names and dates:
Elmer B. Storey 1886 - 1886 Sue R. Storey 1890 - 1891 Mabel G. Storey 1892 - 1894 Bennie Storey 1883 - 1884
The 1910 census shows John as living in Berlin Township, Harper county, Kansas, with his wife and two youngest children, Thomas and Ester. It indicates his parents were both born in England.[Downing.ged]
Genealogy of the Palmer-Trimble Families, page 940: "In addition to those liste in this family, had four children, all deceased as of 1910." The 1886 Atlas of Harper county shows the Storey farm immediately adjacent on the east to the Downing farm. John Story's death certificate states his occupation as "farmer" for 50 years. The 1910 census shows John as living in Berlin Township, Harper county, Kansas, with his wife and two youngest children, Thomas and Ester. It indicates his parents were both born in England. This fact is verified on his death certificate. At the time of his death, he had been living in Wichita for 16 years, apparently at 3204 Chatfield Place. Death certificate in files. An interesting insight into the farming life of John and Ella Storey was found on the 1895 Kansas state agricultural census. It shows the following data for the farm: Number of acres in farm: 160 /// Number of acres under cultivation: 90 ///Acres under fence: 70 /// Acres not under fence: 90 /// Number of rods of fences: 480 Value of farm: 3000 /// Value of implements: 100 /// Acres planted in 1895: Corn 50; Oats 20; Potatoes 1/2; pounds of butter 200 // Number of Horses: 9 /// Number of Mules and Asses: 3 /// Number of Milk Cows: 2 /// Number of Swine: 18 The grave marker of the parents of John Storey, Thomas and Sarah, is located in Forest Park Cemetery in Anthony, Kansas. John Storey was the brother of Thomas Storey, who married Susan R. Storey. The two brothers married two sisters.
