General Notes (Husband)

[Downing.ged]

Thomas Storey was the brother of John Storey, husband of Ella S. Downing. The sisters married brothers. The farms in Silver Creek Township were adjacent to each other. His death certificate (in files) shows a cause of death as kidney failure.

A short obituary appeared in the "Anthony Republican" on May 30, 1935:
"Thomas Storey, of Freeport; a resident of Harper county for many years, died Sunday, May 26, at the age of eighty-three years. Funeral services were held from the Gem Mortuary on Tuesday, May 28, with Rev. E. L. Duby officiating Interment was in Forest Park Cemetery." According to e-mail corespondent Phyllis (Storey) Harrison, Thomas was blind. He lost both eyes in a similar manner, but some years apart, by being hit by a nail or something while hammering.

An article from the Anthony Republican, dated July 16, 1914, lists Thomas Storey as a teacher in Harper county school district 29.

General Notes (Wife)

[18401.ged]

Susan appears in the 1870 census with her family in East Nantmeal Twp. That census lists her occupation as "Dress maker". She also appears in the obituary for her brother, Benjamin Henry Downing, as "Mrs. Susan Storey, of Anthony, KS".[Downing.ged]

Susan appears in the 1870 census with her family in East Nantmeal Twp. That census lists her occupation as "Dress maker". She also appears in the obituary for her brother, Benjamin Henry Downing, as "Mrs. Susan Storey, of Anthony, KS". I have been unable to locate her in the Harper county census reports. On my 1999 Kansas trip, I found her listed in the records of Forest Park cemetery, Anthony, Harper co., with her husband, Thomas Storey. Thomas was the brother of John Storey, husband of Ella S. Downing. The two sisters married tw brothers. Photo of the gravesite was taken on May 3, 1999. An Obituary was located in the "Anthony Republican" dated February 23, 1912:
"Mrs. Thomas Storey, after years of suffering from dropsy and other troubles died suddenly at her home on North Jennings avenue (Anthony) Sunday morning. The funeral services were held at the M. E. church Monday afternoon by Rev. R. A. Dadisman; interment in Forest Park cemetery.
"Born Susan R. Downing in Chester county, PA, March 29, 1845, she removed with her family to near Bayneville, Sedgwick county, KS, in 1877, where she married Thomas Storey Oct. 21, 1881. Four children were born to them, two dyin in infancy, two daughters, Carrie D. Story and Mrs. Kate E. Hoopes, with the husband, survive her.
"They removed to Harper county near Freeport in 1885 where they lived until the removal to Anthony a few years ago. Mrs. Storey was converted to the Methodist faith in 1907, but her health has been so precarious she had not undertaken full fellowship." Susan's death certificate was obtained on August 17, 1999. It shows the cause of her death at age 66 as kidney failure. An interesting point: her younger sister, Ella, also died of kidney failure. The certificate shows her address as 710 N. Jennings, Anthony, Kansas, and the information on the certificate was provided by her daughter, Carrie. This certificate also provided me with the correct middle name of Susan's father, John Benjamin Downing. A long search ended!

General Notes for Child Carrie D. Storey

[Downing.ged]

Carrie Storey provided the needed information and signed the death certificat of her mother, Susan, in 1912. Carrie is also mentioned in the 1931 will of he aunt, Carrie Halstead Downing, as follows:
"To my beloved niece, Carrie D. Duncan, the sum of $500.00".

General Notes for Child Ella Kate Storey

Has four sons, two of whom are still living (October, 1999), according to correspondent Phyllis (Storey) Harrison.

One other source shows birth date as 17 Mar, not 27. Quaker records indicate birth in Concord Twp, Chester Co., PA, but other source indicate the first two born children were "probably born in England". The Bradninch, England, baptisms from the Devon Record Office show Thomas baptized on 9 Jun 1717. This would certainly indicate he was born in England.[Downing.ged]

"Genealogy of the Palmer-Trimble Families", page 740: "They resided in Upper Uwchlan, where he owned a farm."

The following notice appeared in the "Register and Examiner" of West Chester, PA:

"April 9, 1853: Died -- In Uwchlan Township on Sunday morning the 3rd inst., George Downing, in the 68th year of his age. The deceased retired on the evening previous as well as usual. He coughed in the night, turned over, and his wife hearing him breathe heavily, arose, lit a candle, and returned to him; when she found him his spirit fled. The deceased was widely and universally esteemed and the deep feeling of regret at his loss will not be confied to his family and neighborhood, but he experienced wherever he was known."

George appears in the 1850 census for Chester County. He is listed as a farmer, with worth of $14,000. Ellen Brown (B) is listed as a servant.[Downing.ged]

Sources: "Biedler Family History", page 260, family records of Leo Bringhurst, Toquerville, Utah "Genealogy of the Palmer-Trimble Families", page 741: "they removed to Nauvoo, Illinois, but this must have been long after Joseph's death." Little has been discovered about Joseph, probably compounded by his rather young death at the age of 35 years. His death in 1822 precluded the establishment of the Latter Day Saints, thus he likely died with his Quaker faith unchanged.

"A Corner in Ancestors", by Eleanor Lexington, Copyright by McClure Syndication "One immigrant came from Devonshire. He was Thomas Downing, and a member of the Society of Friends. Pennsylvania was naturally the place he chose for a home. Downingtown is the name of the town he helped settle, and the old homestead still stands" (Newspaper article, c. 1940)

"The Devonshire Downings" prepared by John Perot, Ardmore, PA, put together fro the entries in the parish records of Bradninch, Devonshire, England, in 1901 an 1903: "Thomas Downing, son of Thomas Downing, born December 14, 1691, and was baptized January 6, 1691/2, at Bradninch. The Bradninch records show that a Thomas Downing married Judeth Bending on 2 Jun 1717. Judeth, wife of Thomas Downing, was buried 26 Jan 1723. According to the Downingtown records, 'his first wife was said to have been named Ellen, and his second Tomazine, who was perhaps the mother to all his children. On Dec 1756 he married Jane Alborne (o Albin).' There seems to be some error here, unless he had two wives before Tomazine; Ellen and Judeth. Thomas Downing came to Pennsylvania before 1718, where he was taxed in Concord township from 1718 to 1732; later moving to Downingtown, where he died age 81. The Downingtown records says that two of hi children were born in England and the Bradninch recoreds show the births of a Thomasine (1715) and Thomas (1717)."

Notes of contributor Sandra K. Farney: "He was a founder of Downingtown, Pennsylvania, a Welsh settlement. He settled on the east branch of Brandywine Creek and was a farmer, miller, and merchant. He was a Friend (Quaker) and was a member of the Falls, Birmingham, Wilmington, & Baltimore Friends Meetings."

From "History of Chester County", page 525: "There is reason to think that while in concord he operated a mill belonging to Nathaniel Newlin, and he and his descendants continued to be mill-owners at Downingtown for several generations."[Downing.ged]

General Notes for Child Jane Hoopes Downing

[18401.ged]

Here's an interesting mystery. Eleanor Mason, wife of Thomas Downing, Jr., died at the age of 31 on August 20, 1836. Her son, Robert Valentine Downing, age 11, died on the same date. And her daughter, Jane Hoops Downing, not quite six years old, died 18 days later on September 8, 1836. The deaths occurred in Chester County, Pennsylvania. It would be difficult to place these deaths in the category of natural causes. The father, Thomas Downing, survived whatever befell this family, living another 15 years until 1851.

Let your imagination solve the mystery.[Downing.ged]

Genealogy of the Palmer-Trimble Families, page 940: Address: Renfrew, Oklahoma

Thomas E. Downing has his name engraved on the Pioneer settlers monument in Medford,Grant county, Oklahoma. He was in the 1893 land rush on the Cherokee strip. On May 3, 1998, I visited the monument in Medford; the photos are in th media file for Thomas Ellsworth Downing. His name is on top of a column on the back of the monument.

In the Last Will and Testament of his sister, Carrie Halstead Downing, she states: "Seventh:- I hereby direct that $50.00 be paid out of my estate for the erectio of a marker at the grave of my beloved brother, Thomas E. Downing, in the Caldwell Cemetery, and I desire that said marker be erected within one year after my decease." As the will was dated 1931, this confirms that Thomas died prior to that year.

I have not been able to find the cemetery indicated. There is no "Caldwell Cemetery". There are, however, two cemeteries near Caldwell; the Alton and the Doster. It is probable that Thomas is buried in one of these two cemeteries. The 1908 obituary of his brother, Benjamin, in The Wichita Daily Eagle, states, "Thomas Downing, of Caldwell, KS."

The data on the wife and children of Thomas were determined from the 1900 and 1910 U.S. Census for Hickory Township, Grant county, Oklahoma. Copy of both in files. This data was later refined in correspondence with Bertha Downing, of Medford, OK.

The Thomas Downing farm was in the north part of Grant County; the west half of 20-29-5; land they staked in the run of 1893. Thomas died of influenza in the great influenza outbreak following World War I, which killed millions world-wide.[Downing.ged]
