General Notes for Child William Downing

[18401.ged]

Notes from Dianna Nading: William Downing was born in 1762 in Bart Township, PA, the youngest son of William and Ellen (John) Downing. He was raised in Bart Township, Lancaster county, PA, in a strict Quaker environment. In 1781 he was married to Phoebe Beckett, daughter of Samuel and Mary Beckett, and the couple had eight children

William, jointly with his brother Samuel, had inherited land and mills (gris and saw mills) when their father died in 1788. The will indicated that the brothers and their heirs and assigns were to "share and share alike the land, Merchant, Grist, and Saw Mills". At the time of his father's death, William wa 26 years old and had been married seven years, having four children.

No record indicates whether the partnership was dissolved, but William move to Frederick county, Virginia, sometime after 1788 (probably 1791).

On Nov. 7, 1791, a certificate of membership for the family was granted at the Hopewell Friends Meeting (Quaker) indicating a transfer from the Sadsbury Friends congregation in Lancaster county, PA. Certificates were granted to William, his wife Phoebe, and his children: Ruth, Eleanor, Mary, John, Sarah, and Phoebe.

The history of Hopewell Friends shows that William was indeed an active member of the congregation, serving on numerous committees, including one to visit friends who had been dismissed. Daughters Ruth and Eleanor were both married at Hopewell, and William and Pheobe were listed as witnesses to many weddings of other members.[Downing.ged]

General Notes (Husband)

[Downing.ged]

Death certificate of wife (Ida) was signed by one Carl Downing, relationship uncertain at this time. Obituary from the "Anthony Republican":
"W. C. Downing died at his home in Pilot Knob Township Wednesday, July 25th after a long and lingering illness. He suffered from a cancer of the stomach, and was a patient sufferer. He was about 55 years old. He had been a resident of Pilot Knob Township for the past ten years and was highly esteemed by all those who knew him.
"Funeral services were held at the U. B. Church 8 miles southeast of here and the remains were interred in the Freeport cemetery. The surviving relative have the sympathy of the community." On May 3, 1999, I visited the Freeport cemetery for the second time to re-photograph the gave markers. After taking the desired pictures, a car parke behind mine, and three women got out and entered the cemetery. Surprised to se anyone in this "middle of nowhere" location, I watched them as they walked up t the grave marker of William C. Downing. They stopped at the monument. I got out of my car and asked if they were related to him. One, who turned out to be Verla Downing DeJarrett, of Wellington, KS, replied, "Yes, he's my great grandfather." I then told her that her great grandfather (William) and my grea grandfather (Benjamin) were brothers. I then explained the relationship among the other Downings buried in that cemetery. Subsequent correspondence has ensued. This amazing event, beyond all reasonable probability, took place on a late Sunday afternoon, in a deserted cemetery, near an empty ghost town. It defies explanation.

The burial site of Mary Couch Downing in Freeport Cemetery, Harper County, Kansas, was discovered on the internet on December 28, 1997, and visited by me in May, 1998. Hard copy in files. The family farm was the 160 acres of the SE quarter of Section 5, Silver Creek Township. Death certificates were not issued by Kansas prior to 1911. However, the City of Anthony maintained a ledger book recording deaths in their jurisdiction in years prior to that. On my May, 1999, trip to Anthony, I viewed the ledger and found Mary's name entered, with a cause of death as cardiac failure. The ledge is in the Anthony City Hall. Two obituaries were also found in the Anthony newspapers on microfilm. "Memories from Ruth Naomi Downing Simanek", dau. of Thomas Ellsworth Downing, notes the following about Mary: "I saw her once, but I was small and all I remember about her, she was a small woman."
