Smedley Family, pp. 297-298: "He was born in the old log house on the Lancaste Pike, just east of the Brandywine, in Downingtown, and his residence after marriage was a few rods eastward of this. He learned the business of a fuller or cloth manufacturer, which he carried on where Austin Bicking now has a paper mill. In this he wa joined for some years by his brothers, Samuel and Charles, after which he retired and the business was discontinued."

Obituary notice received from the Harper County Historical Society, Feb 13, 1998:
" (1943) WINFIELD S. DOWNING Passed away Feb 13 at the age of 80. Came to Harper County 58 years ago in 1885.
Funeral services for Winfield S. Downing, old-time resident of Harper County who passed away Feb. 13, were held last Monday afternoon at the Parsons funeral home, with Rev. L. O. McCracken and Rev. Paul Cook as the officiating ministers. Interment was in the Freeport Cemetery. The obituary gives these facts: Winfield S. Downing was born at Westchester, PA, June 2, 1862. H came with his parents to Sedgwick county, Kansas, in 1877, and to Harper County Kansas in 1885, where he has lived continuously with the exception of six years after he made the 'run' into Oklahoma. On Nov. 3, 1891, he was united in marriage to Miss Ada Watkins, o Freeport. He became a Christian early in life and had been a member of the Anthony Baptist church since 1923. He is survived by his widow, Ada; and by on son, Joseph; also a brother, George; and by one granddaughter."
The last will and testament of his sister, Carrie Halstead Downing, bequeaths the following: "To my beloved brother, Winfield S. Downing, the sum of $900.00." The will is dated May 9, 1930.

On December 11, 1998, the death certificate of Ada was received from the Kansas Department of Vital Statistics. This revealed her middle name, dob and dod. She died aged 90 of congestive heart failure while in the Thog Martin Nursing Home, Wichita, KS. The informant for the death certificate was her son, Joseph Downing, giving an address of 1008 North Old Manor. Burial was handled by the Parsons Funeral Home in Anthony, Kansas. The publication of the Harper County Genealogical Society, "Harper County Connections", Vol. 5 No. 1, 1999, reproduced a newspaper article that appeared in the Anthony, KS, Republican and Anthony, KS, Bulletin on Thursday, May 28, 1953, in commemoration of Harper county's 75th anniversary. This was a listing of Harper county pioneers who had lived there for 50 years or more. Listed in the group for 1886 was Mrs. Ada Downing, of Anthony.

Data indicates he was an aircraft worker at Beech Aircraft, home address 1008 N. Old Manor, Wichita, KS 67208. Arrangements handled by Downing & Lahey Funeral Home; was entombed. Died of congestive heart failure and related cardiovascular ailments. The cryp was visited by me in May, 2000, and photographed. He and his wife are located at the Old Mission - Quering mortuary in Wichita, N.E. Central corridor, Semi-private alcove, Row K, Level 4.
