Born December 23, 1743, in Charleston District, the so n of Dr. John Drayton, Jr, and Charlotte Bull. Graduated fr om Edinburgh University, Scotland, M.D., 1770. Physician an d large planter of Charles Town and "Drayton Hall" plantati on. Married Esther Middleton, daughter of Henry Middleton ( 1717-84), February 24, 1774. During Revolutionary War, capt ain of volunteers; also supplied provisions. Commissioner t o maintain free drain from Long Savannah, 1785. Justice o f quorurn. S. C. House of Representatives, St. Andrews, 178 5; resigned on election as Lieutenant Governor on Februar y 11, 1785 (because of ~indisposition," did not qualify unt il March 22, 1785), serving until 1787. S. C. House of Repr esentatives St Andrew's, 1787-92. S. C. Senate, St· Andrew' s, 1792-96, 1797-1800. Delegate to state convention to rati fy Federal Constitution, 1788. The second son of Peter Manigault and Elizabeth Wragg, Jo seph, married a daughter of Arthur Middleton, the signer, w ho soon died leaving no issue. He then married a daughte r of Charles Drayton, of the well-known South Carolina fami ly. The fruit of that union was eight children, of whom th e only daughter married Thomas House Taylor, afterwards rec tor of Grace Episcopal Church, New York city.

Of the seven sons, the two youngest, Edward and Arthur, we re the best known. They both served in the Mexican War, Edw ard as Major of one of the ten regiments of regulars raise d for the reinforcement of Scott's army after the city of M exico had fallen, and Arthur as first lieutenant in the Cha rleston company of the South Carolina regiment of volunteer s, known as the PalmettoRegiment. In the civil war, Edwar d was at first chief of ordnance of the State, and afterwar ds in charge of a battery of heavy siege guns on James Isla nd. He commanded the rear guard when the island was evacuat ed in February, 1865, and was then desperately wounded an d captured. He was a civil engineer by profession, and di d much railroad work. As a soldier he was well informed an d had considerable practical experience with the additiona l qualification of being perfectly fearless in precence o f the enemy. He died in 1874.

In the Civil War, Arthur first raised a regiment of inf antry which he commanded with his headquarters at Georgetow n, S.C., of which he also commanded the military district . In the spring of 1862 he was ordered to Bragg's army afte r the battle of Shiloh, and served altogether in it, whic h included its being commanded by Joe Johnston and Hood. H e was twice wounded, the second time seriously at Franklin , Tennessee, in December 1864, and was in every battle in w hich the Western army was engaged until his second wound. H e was promoted to Brigadier General early in 1864. In 188 0 he was elected Adjutant General of South Carolina, and wa s twice re-elected, making a service of six years.
