DRAYTON, Thomas Fenwick (Cousin of Charles Drayton and o f John Drayton), Senator from Parish of St. Luke.
--Born August 24 1808, probably at Charleston, the so n of William Drayton and Ann Gadsden. Graduated from U. S . Military Academy, 1828; brevet Second lieutenant and seco nd lieutenant of infantry. Served at Jefferson Barracks, Mo ., and Newport, Ky.; assigned in 1832 to topographical duty ; resigned from U. S. Army August 15, 1836. Planter of "Rep haim" plantation, Bluffton. Married Catherine Emma Pope Feb ruary 28, 1838. Acquired a Plantation in St. Luke's Parish in 1838. planted until 1861. In S. C. Militia, capta in, 1842-47; state board of ordnance 1851-52. Elected Presi dent of Charleston and Savannah Railroad, 1853-61. S.C. Senate, St Luke's, 1853-56. Brigadier general , Confederate States Army, 1861-65 to take up civil enginee ring in which he engaged in Charleston, S.C., Louisville, K y., and Cincinnati, Ohio.,He also carried on an extensive c otton plantation in St. Luke's parish, S.C., from 1838 to 1 861. He served as state senator 1853-56, and as president o f the Charleston & Savannah railroad, 1853-61. He then ente red the Confederate service and as brigadier-general comman ded the forces that occupied Hilton Head, S.C., at the tim e of the attack and capture of that place by the expeditio n under Sherman and Da Pont and in which attack his brothe r Percival commanded the U.S. steamer Pocahontas. He contin ued in the Confederate service until the surrender when h e engaged in planting in Dooly County, Georgia. He subseque ntly removed to Florence, S.C., and in 1878 became presiden t of the South Carolina immigrant association. He died in F lorence, S.C., Feb. 18, 1891. Removed to Ga., in 1865, plan ter. Removed to Charlotte, agent of Southern Life Insuranc e Company, 1871. President of S.C. Immigrant Society, 1878 . Died February 18, 1891, at Florence; buried in Elmwood Ce metery, Charlotte, N.C.

General Notes for Child Percival Drayton
Drayton, Percival, naval officer, was born in South Caroli na, Aug. 25, 1812; son of William Drayton, representative i n congress and the successor of Nicholas Biddle as presiden t of the U.S. bank. Percival entered the U.S. navy as midsh ipman, Dec. 1, 1827, and was promoted lieutenant, Feb. 28 , 1838; commander, Sept. 14, 1855, and captain, July 16, 18 62. He served on the Brazilian, Mediterranean and Pacific s quadrons, 1838-52, at the naval observatory, Washington, D. C., 1852-58; on the Paraguay expedition, 1858-60; in comman d of the Pocahontas in the Port Royal expedition of 1861;(F ired on his brother Thomas at Hilton Head, South Carolina) , the Pawnee in St. Helena sound, and the monitor Passai c in the bombardment of Fort McAllister and in the first at tack on Fort Sumter. He was fleet captain of the West Gul f squadron and commanded the Hartford, Farragut's flagship , in the battle of Mobile Bay, in 1864. He accompanied Admi ral Farragut to New York city in December, 1864. He was mad e chief of the bureau of navigation, April 28, 1865. He die d in Washington, D.C., Aug. 4, 1865.
