General Notes (Husband)

William Henry Feagin, Sr. remains some what of a myst e r y . He was born in South Carolina, probably coming t o Ge or gia because of the Cherokee land that was sold or p ossib l y be cause he received a land grant. He owned slav es an d m ust have been a wealthy farmer. He mentions cotto n i n hi s will so it is assumed that he farmed at least th at c ro p . His will giving slaves to various children i s date d ri ght in the middle of the Civil War. Could it b e tha t he le ft to fight at age 59? The South at that tim e ha d a sever e shortage of soldiers and was taking olde r men a nd young b oys . In any case, he left his childre n who re mained in G eorgia, and disappeared. I have check ed Civi l War record s , Alabama records, etc., and have ye t to fin d a trace o f where he disappeared to. He is bel ieved t o be the son o f James Feagin because all of the ot her Feag in families tha t came to Jones County are account ed for a s are their child ren . James is the only person W illiam H . Feagin could b e a child of. William H. named hi s son Ja mes Feagin. In a ddition, William did have family -tie-typ e land transaction s with Michael James Feagin an d the Hamm ocks, both known ch ildren of James Feagin. H e also appear s to have claimed th e land lottery awarded t o the orphan' s of James Feagin.

I, William H. Feagin of said county and state being we a k i n body but of sound mind and disposing memory, dee m i t ri g ht to dispose of my property and therefore mak e thi s my l ast will and testament hereby revoking all oth ers b y me a t an y time made.

First I desire direct that all my just debts shall b e p a i d by my executrix herinafter named as soon as pract ica b l e a nd that she shall sell the cotton that I have o n ha n d i n such manner + at such time as she shall deem b es t t o acco mplish that end and in case the proceed of sa i d cott ens d o no t pay all my debts I desire that my neg r o man Sp ence r shal l be sold (If a sale of property bec om e necessa ry) f or the same purpose.

Second I devise and bequeath to my daughter Mary A. Dave n p ort my negro man Henry to her sole and separate use no t s u b ject to the debts of her present or any future husb an d w i t h the right when to use and dispose of said negr o f or h e r own benefit either by will or otherwise and re main de r t o her heirs.

Third I devise and bequeath to my daughter Martha A. Came r o n my negro Hamilton to her sole and separate use not su bj ec t to the debts of her present or any future husband w it h t h e right in her to use and dispose of said negro fo r h er o wn benefit either by will or otherwise and remaind er t o he r heirs.

Fourth I desire and bequeath to my daughter Georgia Fea g i n my negro man Mike to her sole and separate use not s ub je ct to the debts of any future husband with the righ t i n h e r at anytime to use and dispose of said negro fo r he r ow n b enefit either by will or otherwise remainde r to he r hei rs.

Fifth I devise and bequeath to my son James M. Feagi n m y n egro man Moses.

Sixth I desire and direct that the remainder of my prop e r t y consisting of negroes, mules, other stock farmin g a n d o th er tools household and kitchen furniture and a l lo th er a rti cles shall be kept together and managed b y my w if e Jane Fea gin for the purpose of supporting an d educati n g my children William H. and John T. and suppor ting als o he rself until my youngest child John T. shall b ecome twe nty o ne years of age when I desire and direct t hat an equ al div ision o f my estate shall be made betwee n all my chi ldren a nd my wife the property given to eac h one by thi s w ill t o be considered as an advancement o n the portio n of each on e to whom a special devise is her ein made.

Seventh In case any of my children shall die having he i r s of his or her body before the final division of my es ta t e I desire and direct that the heirs afore and of th e b o d y of such child shall take the share of the child s o dy in g and in the event of any one of my children dyin g with o u t heirs of the body I desire and direct that th e porti o n wh ich such child would have received if livin g shal l b e considered a part of my estate and subject t o the div isio n as directed in the sixth item of this will.

Eighth In case my son John T. should die before arrivi n g a t the age of twenty one years, I desire and direct t ha t th e division mentioned in item sixth shall take plac e o n my s ons William H. arriving at that age and in the e ven t that b oth should die before adivision shall be mad e I de sire an d direct that the division mentioned in ite m sixt h shall t a ke place immediately upon such deaths.

Ninth In the event that any child shall be born to m e I d e sire and direct that the division mentioned in ite m six t h shall be deferred till such child arrive at the a ge of twenty one and that such child shall receive a childs por t i on and stand upon equal footing with my other children.

Tenth I hereby constitute and appoint my wife Jane Fea g i n Executrix of this my last will and testament.

Jane Drennan was 24 on the 1850 census, thus giving h e r a b irthdate of about 1826. Her surname is given her e a s Drenn an. It is spelled differently in other source s . I origina ly thought her surname was JOHNS which is in co rrect.


General Notes for Child William Henry Feagin

My g. grandfather, William H. Feagin, fell in lov e w i t h E ugenia Cameron while Eugenia was still a girl . H e ac tu all y waited for her to grow up so he could ma rry h er . Sh e mad e him quit drinking, attend church, an d gene ral ly wal k a st raight path. William H. Feagin wa s love d i n his com munit y and was elected to be Chief o f Polic e o f Americus , Georgi a in which office he serve d until h is d eath in 191 3. He wa s also once Sheriff o f Sumter Cou nty , Georgia duri ng the 18 90's.

William Feagin had a brother, John Thomas Feagin, cal l e d " U ncle Tom". John Thomas is buried in the Lawson fa mi l y pl o t in Americus. William also had a sister, Jenni e F ea gin L aw son, who is also buried in the Lawson plot.

He was a staunch Mason and member of Woodsmen of the W o r l d . His father owned slaves and he kept some on at t h e fa mi l y farm after emancipation. One of the former sl av es th a t st ayed on was named Rufus Feagin.

There was also a family store near the family house o n C h u r ch Street in Americus.

There was, at one time, a picture of William H. Feagi n h a n g ing in the Americus, Georgia City Hall.

He was very close to his family and loved his child r e n a g r eat deal. He was a large burley type of person , w it h dar k h air and a large mustache. He was friends w it h Wil lis P . McA rthur who was a member of the Americu s Fi re Dep artmen t.

William "Bill" H. Feagin died of colon cancer a t a g e 5 5 i n Americus, Georgia. He didn't leave much t o hi s w ido w wh o had to raise the children by sewing, ru nnin g a f lowe r sta nd, selling pecans and doingother suc h thi ngs . She l eft fo r Tampa, Florida in 1922 due to C ordeli a, h er daught er, hav ing Malaria.

He is buried in the Oak Grove Cemetery. His tombston e r e a d s: "None knew him but to love him, none named hi m b u t t o p raise".

This information came from my great grandaunt, Cordel i a F e a gin Tucker in the 1970's.
