General Notes (Husband)
Jessie worked at the Steel Mill in Pittsburg, Ca., for over 20 years before he had to retire disabled. He was confined to a wheel chair for several years prior to his death at the age of 56. Jessie was a very likable person, a lot of fun to be around. He worked hard all his life, was a good father.
Jessie and Dorothy, came to California during the GREAT DEPRESSION in 1936. They first went to Westwood where they stayed about a year, that is where Johnny was born. They went there because Roy and Dovie Rolen were there, and Roy got Jessie a job in a veneer plant. From Westwood they moved to Semi Valley, Ca. and lived in a big house with Jessie's mother Martha and her husband Jack Weems, Jessie's sister Margaret, and some of Jacks children. They stayed there a short time, and then moved to Tranquility, Ca. on a cotton farm. They lived there in a tent with Marie, Jessie's sister, and her husband Ed Rich, and their son Johnny, and Marie and Ed's son Therman. They all lived in the tent until they were able to rent a cabin for $1.00 a month. The farm they lived on was kind of like a camp, and they said people were carried out of there that had starved to death. Sometimes they only had flour gravy to eat. One story they liked to tell was of Therman finding a goose nest with eggs in it; he took one back to his mom to fix for him and he had to share it with Johnny. Therman used to tease Johnny about that a lot.
Jessie and Dorothy moved to San Francisco during the early part of World War ll, and they both worked at the Shipyard at Hunter's Point. They stayed there until the war was over. They were able to save enough money to go back to Oklahoma, and they bought a grocery store, gas station in Hartshorne. They stayed in Oklahoma a few years and then came back to California. They eventually settled in Antioch, sometime in the late 40s or early 50s and moved around a bit until they moved to 232 Rossi Avenue, where Dorothy still lives today.
General Notes for Child Johnny Lee Williams
Johnny was born in Westwood, Ca. during the Great Depression. His Dad was working in a veneer plant there, and he was born in the County Hospital. He had curly red hair, and when he was quite young he won a Beautiful Baby Contest at the old Casino Threatre in Antioch. He was three years older than me and he was a great older brother. He used to tease me a lot when we were small but he was always there for me when we got older.
Johnny went in the Air Force when he was 17. He was stationed in North Africa for about 2 years. When he got home from Africa he met Donna Kay and married her. He was stationed in Merced, Ca. at that time, and he and Donna lived there, and that is where both of their sons were born.
After getting out of the service they came to Antioch. Johnny worked at a few odd jobs, and finally went to work at Fiberboard Corp., in Antioch. He worked there for about 25 years, and retired after his health got bad. He was a very talented person, a good artist, loved to work with his hands. He could tell a joke better than anyone I knew. After he retired he opened a gun shop in Oakley. He built guns, and sold them, and sold new guns and supplies. He loved that shop and worked there until he died. Johnny knew a lot of people, and had a lot of friends. We all still miss him a lot.
General Notes for Child Larry Don Williams
Larry was mentally handicapped because of lack of oxygen at time of birth but in a lot of ways he was smarter than most. His life was taken at the age of 30 because of a terrible accident. He was at Futures Explored in Lafayette, Ca., a place of employment and learning for the mentally chalenged. A driver of a large, older car lost control and went through the front of the building, killing one imediately, and sending Larry to the hospital where he died a few hours later.
Larry was an exceptional person, always happy, never had anything bad to say about anyone, well, almost never. He liked the Beetle's, liked to smoke his pipe, and he liked to look nice. He was always clean, never a hair out of place. He had been living on his own for a few years, and was very proud of that. He needed only a limited amount of help, and his mother was always available when he needed her.
We all still miss Larry a lot.
