General Notes (Wife)



   Hannah, one of the most famous women of early New Eng l a n d , was b. at Haverhill Dec. 23, 1657; m. Dec 3, 167 7 , Th om a s Duston. She was captured by the Indians in o n e of th ei r a ttacks on the settlement, March 15, 1697 , ta ken fro m he r be d with her infant of 6 days, and com pelle d to mar ch wi th he r captors. Seeing her child dash ed t o death aga ins t a tree ; worn with long marching an d crue lties, afte r goi ng with t he Indians for two week s she an d Mrs. Nef f an d a boy, Samue l Lennerson, rose i n the nig ht, kille d and s calped ten Indi ans and made th eir way ho me throug h intoler able hardships . She carrie d the scalp s to Bosto n and was p aid the regula r bounty . Her deed wa s one of th e chief mean s of checking t he c ruelties of th e Indians, s howing them t hat "weak wome n " would meet the ir atrocitie s in kind. Sh e was at no o the r time in her l ife found lac king in the ge ntleness a nd peac eful charact er of woman; t his deed was th e produ ct of a mad dening ex perience. Mr. D uston, who firs t tri ed unsuccessful ly t o induce Hannah t o let him carry h e r to a place of safe t y when he saw th e Indians approachi n g, bent his energie s t o the saving o f their nine child ren ; and by keeping t hem ru nning and fi ring back at th e pursu ing Indians, man aged to g et them al l to a plac e of safety.
