General Notes (Husband)
A James Early is shown in the 1810 NC Census as Head of Household in BRI County. Our James would have been approx. 14 years old. Could this James have been his father? There is an Elizabeth Early shown in this census as Head of Household, which would have meant that she was a widow. She is shown to be living in Rutherford County. This could have been James's mother.
General Notes for Child Ransom Taylor Early
E-mail from Andy Baker of Dalton, GA, a descendant of Ransom Taylor Early to Margaret Gary Hagood Brightwell, also a descendant, dated 29 June 2002:
Dear Gary, Her's the info you requested on what I know of my branch of the Early family. My great-great grandfather was Ransom T. Early, son of James. Ransom was born in Rutherford County, NC on 15 April 1829. His father James was born in 1794. I believe he was also born in Rutherford County. Ransom T. Early married first, Betsey Cherry on 11 October 1859. I don't know anything about this first wife. I found this information on the LDS family search site. Ransom married second, Laura Q. Teague, my great-great grandmother, on 14 July 1861 in Catawba County, NC. They had two children: James Avery Long Early, born 29 April 1862 and Hattie Elizabeth Early, born November 19, 1863. This information comes from Laura Teague Early's Bible which is in my possession. The inscription in the front says that the Bible was a present by Charlie, Sept 16, 1859. I have no clue as to who Charlie might be. Ransom and Laura made their home in Iredell County, NC. Laura died on 7 Aug 1868 and is buried in Fourth Creek Presbyterian Church Cemetery in Iredell County. I got this information from a book in the Rowan County, NC Public Library. The book notes that the tombstone is now broken or missing and that the information came from an earlier listing of those buried therein. Ransom next married Ellen Caroline Martin. Her children with Ransom are as follows: Robert Linton, Margaret, Moses, Dora, Lola and Jubal Ransom Early. Ransom died on 2 November 1888 and is buried in the Bethesda Presbyterian Church cemetery in Iredell County. This info also from a book in the Rowan Public Library. The names of the children came from two sources, my grandmother and some estate papers of Ransom T. Early which I located in the North Carolina State Archives. Robert Linton Early died 8 Ap[April 1895 near Marion, NC. He was a resident of Elmwood in Iredell County and was killed in a train accident. This information came from old newspapers in Statesville, NC. Hattie Elizabeth Early, my great-grandmother, married Charles Albert Haithcox. Their daughter, Iva Mae Haithcox, was my grandmother. She grew up in Iredell County, NC but lived most of her life in Salisbury, NC. She lived to the age of 101 and I talked to her at length about her family. She said that when Ranson married his third wife, Ellen, she was not very nice to my great-grandmother, Hattie. Although my grandmother never expressed it, I got the feeling that Hattie got out of Ransom and her stepmother's house as soon as she could have. However, Hattie did maintain some kind of relationship with her half-siblings. My grandmother spoke of her Uncle Mose. I believe he lived in Granite Quarry, NC, but I'm not sure. I have been in contact with another researcher, Cherri, who is the great-granddaughter of Jubal R. Early. According to Cherri's great aunt, Ann Ruth Early, they called Moses, Uncle M.M. This fits with the info I got from Alice and that's how we made the connection. The only other info that I have is that Ransom T. early had a sister, Harriett. She is listed in the 1850 census of Rutherford County, NC as the daughter of James Early, age 56. As to whether or not we are related to General Jubal Early, I don't know. As to my direct line, I have been unable to go back any farther than James Early, Ransom's father. If you have any information on him or any other family member, please let me know.
Sincerely, Andy Baker
While married to Ellen, Ransom Taylor Early lived in Troutman, Iredell Co., NC.

General Notes (Wife)
Program from the funeral of Mattie Johnston Early: "In Memory Of - Mrs. Mattie Johnston Early- Date of Birth - October 26, 1874 Date of Death - February 28, 1966 Place of Service - Bunch Funeral Home Chapel Time - 4:00 P.M. Tuesday Clergymen Officiating - Rev. Donald Haynes, Rev. John Wilkerson Final Resting Place - New Salem Methodist Church Cemetery Bunch Funeral Home in Charge Statesville, N.C."
In an interview with daughter Bessie Oleta Early (Gunn) in 2002, she stated that her mother was a great mimic. Aside from mimicking the voices of various people, she could also trick people with her imitations of animal sounds. Bessie stated that her mother had quite a sense of humor. Bessie said her mother was often sick and had severe muscular aches and pains. Her mother blamed most of this on a case of malaria she had contracted as a child. In her declining years, Mattie lived with Bessie and her husband Knox Gunn. She was blind, but evidently her sense of humor and love of music never left her, for often when asked how she was, she replied with a rendition of the old hymn, "It is Well With My Soul".

Iva Mae Haitcox told her grandson Andy Baker that when Ransom Early married third wife Ellen Martin that Hattie was still in the home. Hattie felt that Ellen Martin Early was not kind to her and she left the home as soon as it was possible for her to do so.
