As a youth, Adam was drafted for the Rev. War but his father refused to allow him to go. He was a conscientious objector. Adam was allowed to stay home since he wasn't really needed at the time but later was drafted again. This time his father had to pay a triple tax to keep Adam out of the war. One night men broke into the house and took Adam from his bed and forced him to leave with them. The judge finally allowed Adam to return home ruling that the members of the Moravian church were exempt form fighting but they had to pay a triple tax again.
