BIO: Lawrence EDWARDS lists William as the first son of Jeptha EDWARDS, but the 1850 census for Claiborne County shows Jeptha and his wife, Sarah M. enumerated next door to Jeptha's stepmother, "Artiemacy" (O'DELL) EDWARDS. On that enumeration, both Jeptha and his wife are 26 years of age. They have children ranging in age from 7 years to 2 months; there is no William listed in their household. Per Lawrence EDWARDS, William should have been married himself by 1850, but this does not agree with other data found on this couple. Dec., 1996, compiler located the marriage of Jeptha to Sarah Matilda GOFORTH on a CD of marriages 1728-1850. Jan. 1997: Compiler examined the 1870 census enumeration for Claiborne Co., TN, which shows Jeptha again living next door to his stepmother, "Artamecia" (O'DELL) EDWARDS. Here Jeptha's age is given as 49, which would calculate to a year of birth of about 1821. Returning to the two census records previous to 1870, it is noted that while William does not appear in 1850, William and a female named "Margaret" are both enumerated in 1860, and both are listed as "7" years of age. Apparently these two children were twins, born about 1852. Margaret does not appear in her parents' household in 1870, indicating that either she died before that census, or she was in some other household on August 1, 1870. She would have been about 17 years old, so it is possible that she was married by that time. EDWARDS does not mention Margaret in this family in his first book. By 1870 Jeptha and Matilda have Nancy, 20, William, 17, Marshall, 14, Sampson, 12, and "Jetha" (probably "Jeptha"), 8, enumerated in their home. Lawrence EDWARDS did not include Marshall in this family in his first book on the Speedwell families, either. Compiler found Martin and John, sons of Jeptha and Matilda, as heads of their own households in Union County, TN in 1870. Sarah, the EDWARDS' oldest daughter, was enumerated with her husband, Marshall L. O'DELL three households preceding Jeptha and Matilda's. 15 June 1880 enumeration for this household shows Jeptha, 57 years of age, his wife, Sarah M., 56. The only members of their family still enumerated in the EDWARDS' household were Sampson, whose age is not clear ("29"? or "19"?), and 17-year-old Jeptha. In the column provided for "Misc. Information" there is a notation beside Sarah's name which reads, "Blind." "M.L. EDWARDS"(22), wife, "Sarah," and son, "Jonathon" are enumerated in the household immediately after Jeptha's. This is probably Jeptha's son, Marshall.

BIO: "Old Speedwell Families", by Lawrence EDWARDS, p. 64, outlines the marriages and children of Spencer EDWARDS (1780-1860) and his two wives. Among those listed are his son, Jeptha and his two wives, "Matilda GOFORTH and Betsy WHITED". No dates are provided and very few dates are included on the offspring. Compiler found Jeptha in the household next to Artemicia EDWARDS on the 1850 census. Jeptha is listed as 26, his wife 26, and their oldest child, Sarah M., as 7 years of age. Jeptha's wife is also listed as "Sarah M." Although errors are not uncommon, his age and that of his wife would make it reasonable that this was his first marriage. Compiler has made the assumption that Sarah M. must be Sarah Matilda; therefore the same person as Matilda GOFORTH. Dec. 1996: Compiler found the marriage of Jeptha EDWARDS and "Sarah Matilda GOFORTH" listed in a marriage index on one of the Family Tree Maker Family Archive CDs. The date and county of the marriage were included. Sarah Matilda's date and place of birth have been taken from the age and place of birth recorded on the 1850 census record. On the next three census enumerations for Claiborne County, Sarah's age remains consistent within one year of the ten year increases. Examination of the 1860 and 1870 census records bring more questions concerning the accuracy of Lawrence EDWARDS' data on the family of Jeptha EDWARDS. In his first book, EDWARDS reports that Jeptha and "Matilda GOFORTH" had seven children - William, Martin, John, Sampson, Jeptha, Nancy and Sarah. Yet by 1860, the children enumerated in their household are (in order of age) Sarah, Martin, John, Nancy, William, Margaret and Marshall. By 1870, Sarah, Martin and John are gone from the household, and Sampson and Jeptha are added. (It is of some interest, however, that Sampson's age is reported as "12" in 1870 and "19" in 1880, but he was not in the household in 1860.) In 1880, the only two children left in Jeptha and Sarah Matilda's home are Sampson and Jeptha. William, who was reported as the first of Jeptha's children was 7 years old in 1860, fifth in order of age, and there seems to have been a female twin born at the same time as William, for there is also a 7-year-old "Margaret" enumerated in the household. Margaret does not appear later, however, so either she married young and was not in the household by 1870, she died before the 1870 census, or Margaret was not the child of Jeptha and Matilda EDWARDS, and was "visiting" at the time of the 1860 enumeration. Jeptha apparently was the youngest of Matilda and Jeptha, I.'s children; he appears as an 8 year old in 1870 and as "17" in 1880. Marshall L., the EDWARDS' sixth (or fifth, if Margaret was not theirs), is enumerated in his own household, one number distant from Jeptha and Matilda in 1880. "M.L." is listed as 22 years of age; he has a 25-year-old wife, Sarah, and a two-year-old son, Jonathon. Although Lawrence EDWARDS reports that Jeptha, I. married the second time to a "Betsy WHITED," compiler has found no evidence of this, at least up to 1880. Sarah Matilda (GOFORTH) EDWARDS' date and place of death have not been found, as of April, 1997.

BIO: The "Old Speedwell Families, Revised" ref. gives the first wife of Marshall O'DELL as "Sarah HOPPER (1837-1926)", then on p. 235 it states that Sarah EDWARDS married Marshall O'DELL. Marriage records say the first wife was "Serena HOPPER". Compiler suspects that the Sarah O'DELL (1837-1926) who is buried near Marshall's grave in the HOPPER cemetery is Sarah EDWARDS, his second wife. Serena died about 1869 and is probably buried in the same cemetery, but her grave was not found. Per Lawrence EDWARDS' book, Sarah was the daughter of Jeptha EDWARDS, I (son of Spencer EDWARDS and Katie RIDDLE). On her tombstone, Sarah's date of birth is given as "1837", however in filing for increased pension benefits in 1916, Sarah gave her birthdate as "March 16, 1842". This agrees with the age she gives herself on the same form, "Seventy Four Years 5 mo. and 4 Days". On an earlier form for the Bureau of Pensions in 1909, Sarah reported that she was 67 years old; again, this agrees with the 1842 birthdate. This would mean that Sarah was about 44 years old when her youngest child, Nancy B., was born in 1886 (as reported by Marshall in his Pension File documents). Sarah's age was reported as 27 on the 1870 census; this would nearly agree with the birthdate she gave for the pension application. Marshall O'DELL served in the Union Army from March, 1862 until his discharge in March, 1865. Per his claims for Invalid Pension, he spent much of the time in ill health. He filed claims and was granted military pension from about 1890 until his death in September, 1909. At that time, Sarah filed for widow's pension and apparently received benefits until her death in 1927. Among the people filing affidavits on her behalf were David HOPPER, brother of Marshall's first wife, Serena, and M.C. KECK. Witnesses for Sarah and/or these affiants included P.E. CHEATAM, F.N. CHEATAM, Eli KECK, Suda COLE, J.H. ROUSE and S.O. BEASON. The "DROP-REPORT-PENSIONER" form in Sarah's file reads; "Mar 10, 1927. The name of the above described pensioner who was last paid at the rate of $30 per month to Feb 4, 1927 has this day been dropped from the roll because of death Feb 4 1927". Pensioner is recorded as "Sarah M. O'DELL", Goin, Tenn. Route #1". August 1996: Found on the 1850 Census for Claiborne County, TN at LDS Library, Arden, NC....Sarah M. EDWARDS, the first child of Jeptha and Sarah M. EDWARDS. She was 7 years old as of 11 OCT 1850. This would agree with the 1842 date of birth. Although Jeptha's wife's name in the EDWARDS books was given as Matilda GOFORTH, this census would hint that her name may be Sarah Matilda and that her daughter was named for her.

BIO: Nancy was listed as 2 months of age on the 1850 census enumeration (11 Oct. 1850.) On the next census (01 Jun. 1860), she was 11 years old; then on 01 Aug. 1870, she was 20 and still living in her parents' household. Compiler found "James J. and Nancy Jane WOODS" enumerated on the 1880 census for Claiborne County. There is a strong liklihood that this is the record for Jesse and Nancy (EDWARDS) WOODS, although it cannot be proven. Per this record, Jesse ("James J.") was 22 years of age and his wife, Nancy Jane was 29. This would calculate to within one year of the date of birth given for Nancy EDWARDS. Furthermore, Nancy Jane reports that she was born in TN, but her mother was born in NC. Sarah (GOFORTH) EDWARDS was born in NC. The two children listed on the 1880 enumeration are William J., age 4, and John S., age 3. Since there has been no earlier data given on the births of Jesse and Nancy (EDWARDS) WOODS' children, except for Sarah, it is possible that William did not survive/is "Jeemsy" ("William J.") and that the John S. given here is the WOODS' son John, and that he was born before Sarah.

BIO: Although compiler did not find marriage or death data for Myrtle EDWARDS, the approximate marriage date has been estimated from the date of death of M. E. O'DELL's first wife. There is a Leon O'DELL buried near M. E., his first child and first wife. This child, Leon, was born 13 AUG 1931 and died 22 DEC 1931. He may have been the child of M. E. and Myrtle.
