BIO: Eva McCARTY writes of the lives of her grandparents--

"Lavisa and Jessee lived in Union County, Blue Springs area near Sharps Chapel when they were first married. They decided to go with Lavisa's father to Oklahoma in 1897. They settled first in Yukon, OK and later moved to El Reno, OK. They staked out land and built a home. Jesse worked on a nursery for a Mr. Perry. After many encounters with the Indians, mostly by them stealing Jesse's horses and especially after they stole Perry Martha, they packed up and moved back to Tennessee. Thankfully Grandma and my Mom, Mossie, were able to catch up with the Indian's wagon and got Perry Martha back. They said that Perry was having fun sitting on the back of the wagon playing with beads... ...Elisha LAY and his son-in-law, Jesse Jackson ELDER, built a beautiful home on the John (Jack) LAY Farm in Campbell County (TN) on the Powell River. The house was built for Dr. G.W. LAY, the son of David L. This is where Jesse met Lavisa LAY. After Jesse and Lavisa returned to Tennessee from OK, they bought the house from Dr. LAY, and lived there until Jesse's death..."

Per the family groups provided by Mrs. McCARTY, Jesse Jackson was the fourth child of Moses and Charity (RIGGS) ELDER. Compiler located his parents on the Campbell County, TN census for 1860. At that time, the couple had only two children, Nancy J, 2 and Mary L. 10 months. In 1880, there were seven children enumerated in the home, the oldest being 22 years of age (Nancy J.). Jesse J. was 16, and was noted as working on the farm.

General Notes (Wife)

BIO: Lavisa would have been about 4 years of age when her natural mother, Eliza (SWEAT) LAY died. Her father, Elisha LAY, married again within a year of Eliza's death. Martha (WILLIAMSON) LAY was beloved by this step daughter; per Mrs. McCARTY, Lavisa considered Martha her "real mother." Quoting Lavisa, Mrs. McCARTY write, "Lavisa said, Martha was the most kind and loving person she has ever known." The 1880 census shows Lavisa LAY as "Visa"; her age is recorded as "6". (This is not in agreement with the date of birth cited for Lavisa by Mrs. McCARTY.) Jesse and Lavisa left Tennessee in 1897 and lived in Yukon and El Reno, OK. They returned to Tennessee in 1905 and lived in a section of the "Jack" and Mary Pauline (O'DELL) LAY farm. During their time in OK, the ELDERs had numerous "visits" from the Indians in the area. Several times, Jesse and Lavisa had horses taken from their land, but on one occasion, the Indians took the ELDERs' daughter, Perry Martha. Lavisa and another daughter, Mossie, chased the Indians' wagon and were able to get the child back safely. Mrs. McCARTY writes, "They said Perry was having fun, sitting in the wagon, playing with the Indians' beads." Cyclones were frequent in the area where the family lived in OK. It was not unusual for them to spend a whole day or a night in their "cyclone cellar." The family returned to Campbell County, TN in 1904, buying from a cousin the house that Jesse ELDER and Elisha LAY had built for a son of Elisha's brother, David. Jesse died there, and Lavisa remained in the house until the Tennessee Valley Authority purchased the land to flood for the backwaters of Norris Dam. She then moved to Jacksboro, TN; later she lived in Wartburg, then in Clinton, TN with her children. She died in the home of her daughter, Perry Martha, at Oliver Springs, TN. Of her grandmother, Mrs. McCARTY writes, "For the love of two of her sons, Elisha and Marion, she ended up with nothing. The two sons squandered away all she had." A notation on Lavisa's family group sheet, returned to compiler by Eva McCARTY, reads: "Married...Home of the Bride by Rev. Newton CANNON." (June, 1997)

General Notes for Child Mossie Lee Elder

[bobspu.ged]

m1. Swan Lewis Dial m2. Brad Wells

BIO: With all of the large volume of family lore and data furnished by Eva McCARTY on this family, there was surprisingly little biographical information concerning Mossie Lee ELDER, Eva's mother. A group picture was included in one of Mrs. McCARTY's letters, which showed Mossie, her second husband, Brad WELLS, and several other members of the Elder family. This photo was dated about 1913, and showed the ladies in their long skirts and large, feathered hats. Mossie appeared to be of average height and slender, with dark hair and eyes -- a very attractive young lady! One family story included in the biographies of Jesse Jackson and Lavisa (LAY) ELDER concerning Mossie was the incident of the Indians taking the ELDERs' young daughter, Perry Martha, from their home in OKLAHOMA. It seems that Mossie and her mother, Lavisa, chased the Indians' wagon and were successful in getting the little girl back. Mossie's report to her daughter in later years, was that Perry Martha was contentedly playing with the Indian beads in the back of their wagon, totally unaware that she might have been in danger. Eva reports that her mother was of the Baptist faith. Mossie was married both times at the Privit Flat School-Church. The cause of her death was respiratory ailment and heart failure. She was buried in the cemetery of the Hillvale Baptist Church in Clinton, TN. In June, 1997, Mrs. McCARTY sent compiler a large amount of family data with pictures, newspaper articles, etc. In that collection was the following obituary for her mother, Mossie WELL.

MEMORIAL OBITUARY Entered Into Eternal Rest Friday, Feb. 16, 1979

Mossie Lee ELDER WELLS, 85, Miller Road, Route 1, Clinton, died Friday at 10:10 a.m. of respiratory arrest at Fort Sanders Presbyterian Hospital in Knoxville. She had been in the hospital three days. Mrs. WELLS enjoyed quilting, sewing, crocheting, cooking, flower gardening and growing house plants. She was the oldest member of Hillvale Baptist Church in the Hillvale Community. Her husband, Brad WELLS, a retired farmer, died in 1957. Her first husband Swan DIAL died in 1918. Mrs. WELLS is survived by two daughters, Mrs. Elisha (Estella) MILLER and Mrs. Elgin (Eva) McCARTY, both of Clinton; two sons, Bennett DIAL of Clinton and Earl WELLS of Cincinnati, OHIO; two sisters, Mrs. Perry WELLS of Oliver Springs and Mrs. Hattie WELLS of Clinton; one brother, Marion ELDER of Seattle, WASH.; eight grandchildren and one great-great-grandson. Services were held Sunday afternoon at Hilvale Baptist Church in the Hillvale Community, with the Rev. Clifford FRAKER and the Rev. Steve HILL officiating. Burial was in the church cemetery. Holley-Gamble Funeral Home in Clinton was in charge of arrangements. The family requests that any memorial contributions be made to the American Cancer Society, c/o Mrs. Mary AUBUCHON, ... Pallbearers were grandchildren, Donald MILLER, Darrell MILLER, Ricky MILLER and nephews, Robert WELLS, Dennis ELDER and Donald WELLS.

General Notes for Child Elisha Elder

[bobspu.ged]

BIO: Although she gives no details, Mrs. McCARTY reports that Elisha and Beatrice ALLEN divorced. In her anecdotal reports on the members of the ELDER family, Eva McCARTY writes, "Cause of death unknown...found dead under Clinton River railroad bridge. Don't know if he was killed and placed there, or as he was bad to hobo, he may have missed his jump." In later notes written on group sheets sent by compiler for approval, Eva McCARTY writes, "Elisha ELDER - Found dead on the banks of the Clinch River under the RR tressel in Clinton, TN. Death unknown - He liked to hobo the trains. Some think he may have missed calculating his jump, but family thinks he was murdered and put there. I don't know, because he didn't immediately die, because the grass was mashed down where he had rolled around." Mrs. McCARTY adds that Elisha and Beatrice had no children.

General Notes for Child Marion Harlen Elder

[bobspu.ged]

m1. Ophelia Hill Nelson m2. Camerlia Williams 3. Elsie Kempf" m4. Lydia Frank 5. Unknown Porter

BIO: Per Eva McCARTY, Marion H. ELDER was employed by General Motors Corp. in Detroit. He also ran a mission for alcoholics in Seattle during the years he lived there. Marion was married three times. His first wife, Ophelia NELSON, and Marion divorced. He married Camerilia WILLIAMS in 1942; after her death he married Lydia FRANK in Walla Walla, WA. In June, 1997, Mrs. McCARTY mailed a large amount of data to compiler, along with a book written by Marion ELDER. The book, "Between Me and the Bottle," told Marion's story of his struggle with alcoholism, a battle which continued until his death. Mrs. McCARTY added notes about this uncle of hers, whom she and her husband found in the Skidrow area of Detroit in the 1950s, badly cut up and destitute. Mr. and Mrs. McCARTY visited Marion again in Seattle just months before he died. During that visit, the McCARTY's were treated royally; Mrs. McCARTY writes, "...I had the most wonderful time. He had to take us sight seeing even in his condition...He talked so much of his regrets & it helped him so much...he wanted me to cook because it tasted so much like my Grandma's (his mother's) and my mom's (cooking)..." Included in biographical notes on the family, Mrs. McCARTY wrote as follows:

Note on Marion Elder. Had a baby -- Levita Elder by ? PORTER (I think was his secretary in Seattle, Wash. Levita was born in Portland, Oregon.

Also. During WWII Marion met Elsie KEMPF in her home town of Wurzburg, GERMANY. Her husband was presumed dead. Marion and Elsie planned to marry after the War. But as the War ended her husband returned (being a prisoner instead.) Elsie was pregnant with Marion's child. A son "Harald" KEMPF. Elsie never told Harald that Marion was his father until she was on her death bed. Late 1990 I think. Anyway when Harald heard this. He got on the phone and called Marion's sister Perry Martha. Perry had wrote to Elsie for years in fact she use to mail care packages to her. That is how Harald got the phone number. When he called Perry he ask about Marion. Perry said, your're a few months late, he's dead. Nevertheless Harald came to TN to visit. The sad thing he had been to the states many times.
