The following story was written by "Rus" Emberton, as related by a distant cousin.
This tale will probably not be found in any history book, nor may anyone admit it (even the Emberton that told me this), but there seeems to nave been an episode by Uncle Ed and some friends that lived in or around Milan, Sullivan County, Missouri.
The story was that one of the leading preachers was having a very, very intimate relationship with the wife of a good friend of our Uncle Ed. As it was related to me, the leading preacher and the friends wife were actually caught in tha act. After some getting together of six or so friends, the preacher, that was committing the adultery, was caught after dark and tar and featherswere applied.
The way the story went, plans had been made before the tar and feather party took place, that all parties involved would leave town as soon as possible, the next morning not being any too soon. I guess the preacher was a fair shot and could carry his own weight on a one to one go-round with his fists. Uncle Ed left Milan soon after. Uncle Ed didn't seem to be to afraid of the preacher, as he let the folks know that he was in Oklahoma, near Woodward. Of course it was reported that he waited 30 years to let them know.
