Will Emory, the renegade Cherokee who ran with the Sha w n e e s and became known as Captain Will. The name is som ew h a t fa mous in frontier Kentucky annuals because of Ca pta i n W ill' s relationship to Daniel Boone and the attac k o n B oone sboro . Captain Will doubtlessly has many mixe d-bl oo d desce ndant s around today.

Will Emery's original village was called Will's Tow n , a n d i t was located on Will's Creek in what is now Ma ry lan d . As t he settlements of whistes crept westward, C apt ai n Wi ll wa s forced to utilize the Kentucky lands a s hun tin g gro uonds . He and his Shawnee/Cherokee huntin g part y sur prise d and c aptured Daniel Boone on his firs t tri p to Ken tucky , Captai n Will released them with a w arnin g never t o retur n.

In 1774, when Logan's band of Mingoes were raiding th e w h i t e settlements on the Virginia frontier, "a larg e ma n mu c h w hiter than the rest" who "talked good Engli sh" w as re po rted ly in the war party. "Some think Capt J ohn Lo gan i s ab out y et --- others that is is Will Emery , a hal f-bree d Che rokee. ..he is known to be..in the Sha wanese i nterest ...h e was th e interpreter when Col. Done lson ru n the line , an d it was h e robbed Knox and Skaggs ..." Se e Draper 3QQ 117.

Captain Will spoke excellent English, and seems to h a v e h a d a hearty sense of humor. He was on good terms w i t h Dani e l Boone during Boone's second captivity and di sc us sed th e p rospects of taking Boonesboro with him. According to a history of Bedford County, Pennsylvani a ( B e d ford: The Kernal of Greatness, p. 17), some of th e wo m e n o f the county were captured by Shawnees and Cap tai n Wi l l wa s believed to have been the leader of the w ar p arty . T hes e warriors and their captives were tracke d b y a com pan y o f their relatives. The main party was n ot o vertaken , bu t on e of the prusuers, George Powell, l ate r waylaid C aptai n Wil l at his campsite on Will's Kno b, t ook his scal p, an d burie d the body there.

Captain Will spoke excellent English, and seems to h a v e h a d a hearty sense of humor. He was on good terms w i t h Dani e l Boone during Boone's second captivity and di sc us sed th e p rospects of taking Boonesboro with him. According to a history of Bedford County, Pennsylvani a ( B e d ford: The Kernal of Greatness, p. 17), some of th e wo m e n o f the county were captured by Shawnees and Cap tai n Wi l l wa s believed to have been the leader of the w ar p arty . T hes e warriors and their captives were tracke d b y a com pan y o f their relatives. The main party was n ot o vertaken , bu t on e of the prusuers, George Powell, l ate r waylaid C aptai n Wil l at his campsite on Will's Kno b, t ook his scal p, an d burie d the body there.
