Having commanded under his half-brother Athelstan at Brunanburgh, Edmund recaptured parts of the Midlands (942) and Northumbria (944) seized by Norse King Olaf Guthfrithson of Dublin (died 942) after Athelstan's death. He secured the Anglo-Scottish border by subduing Strathclyde (945), handing this to Malcolm 1 of Scotland for promised military aid. Powerful Wessex-born ealdormen brothers ruled East Anglia and Kent for the King. An Edmund charter first records Derbyshire. Edmund was stabbed to death by Leofa, an exiled thief; an ironic fate when the first Hundred (district) court originated in his reign.

A challenge to Eadred , w hi ch s er ves to illustrate one of his chief qualities , de vel ope d i n the north, in the early 950's. Eric Bloo daxe , a n aptl y na med, ferocious, Norse Viking who had b een d epos ed by h is ow n people, established himself as k ing o f Nort humbri a at Yor k, apparently with the fearfu l acqui escenc e of th e Northumb rians. Eadred responded b y marchi ng nort h wit h a considerab le force to meet th e threat. H e procee ded t o ravage the Nor se-held territo ries, then m oved bac k to th e south. He was a ttacked o n the way hom e by Eric' s forces . Eadred was so enr age d that he threat ened to g o back to N orthumbria and rava g e the entire lan d.
This prospect frightened the already frightened Northu m b r i ans into abandoning Eric Bloodaxe. It must be tha t th e y v ie wed Eadred as more formidable than a bloodthi rst y Vi king , w ho had been thrown out of a society know n fo r it s blood thir stiness, because he was too bloodthi rst y and t yrannica l fo r them. In any case, according t o th e "Anglo- Saxon Chr onicl e", "the Northumbrians expel led E ric."
As to his personal side, William of Malmesbury provi d e s s o me illumination. He says that Eadred was afflict e d wi th s om e lingering physical malady, since he was, " co nstan tly o ppr essed by sickness, and of so weak a dige sti on a s to b e unab le to swallow more than the juices o f th e foo d he ha d masti cated, to the great annoyance o f hi s guests ." Regar ding hi s spiritual side, apparentl y th e pillaging , ravagin g and la ying waste that he did , ha d no deleterio us effect s on him . As Malmesbury stat es, h e devoted his l ife to God , "endure d with patienc e his fr equent bodily pa ins, prolon ged his pr ayers an d made hi s palace altogethe r the schoo l of virtue.
