General Notes (Husband)

[Leip.ged]

Restaurant owner, chemical process operator. Willis D (the D was only an initial) was born on a farm in Fulton Co., the western most county in Kentucky. He was named after Dr. Willis who delivered him and the D was for his father who was called Dop, a nickname for Adolphus. He was the fourth child born to Adolphus and Etta. The first two died before he was born. His sister, Thelma, was six a few days after he was born. He grew up and worked with his father on the farm until they moved to Riceville. While the family lived there another sister, Bonnie Lou, was born in March of 1920. His white hair as a child earned him the nickname, Cotton, which stayed with him the rest of his life. He and his Sister attended grade school in the country near his home. He finished high school at Fulton, and went to college at Murray Teachers College. He was primarily interested in studying science and math, and didn't take too much else. After his first semester in college he started working in a restaurant near campus and took only a few courses. Before he finished finished his second year his father's health was failing, so Cotton dropped out of school to work. He stayed in Murray to work and to continue courting Laura Erwin. On February 29, 1928 they went to Paris, Tennessee and got married. His sense of humor was such that he would think it was appropriate for a Leip to marry on Leap Year day. After they married and Laura finished her last semester they moved to Fulton, KY. He worked at Smith's restaurant and Laura taught home economics at South Fulton High School. Willis D either worked for someone else in a restaurant or operated his own in Fulton, Paducah, Mayfield and Wickliffe. When he was 38 he was drafted into the Army during World War II. He sold the restaurant he owned in Wickliffe, KY to the bank where he had borrowed the money to open it. Six weeks after being drafted the Army sent him home, bad legs. The bank wanted a lot more than they paid him for the restaurant so rather than go back into restaurant work he took a job making TNT at the Kentucky Ordinance Works located between Kevil and Paducah. After the war he moved his family to East St. Louis and took a job with Monsanto Chemical Co. where he worked until he died an early death in 1960. A chemical that had been made in his department turned out to be a powerful carcinogenic. Most of the men he worked with died of cancer of the bladder. His actual cause of death was heart failure, but there was little doubt that the chemical had contributed to his many health problems. He was crazy about his grandchildren, but he didn't live long after they were born. In fact, Vera and WD were expecting their third child when he died, but they didn't know until it was too late to tell him. Willis D. loved Christmas. He was always the first one up Christmas morning. Then he would go around waking everyone up saying "Christmas Gift, Christmas Gift". One year WD sat down by the tree and carefully examined each one of his gifts and then guessed what it was. He was right about all of them so even though money was tight Willis D. bought him another gift. WD felt badly and never guessed what presents might be again. Willis D. always had a twinkle in his eye and maintained his wonderful sense of humor right up until the last. Life was never easy for him, but he still had a love of life. He is buried Harmony Methodist Church Cemetery next to his parents. The church is in a rural area near Crutchfield, KY

General Notes (Wife)

[Taylors and Leips.FTW]

[Leip.ged]

Educator, Home Economist Laura's parents were raised in Calloway Co. Kentucky. Her father owned and operated a saw mill. He invented a way to power the saw with a gasoline engine so that the mill would be portable. Laura was born in Dexter, MO because her dad had bought a tract of timber there and had moved the mill there to cut up the timber into lumber he could sell. Laura said the best summer of her life was when she was about six years old her dad was harvesting timber near Reelfoot Lake. The family lived in a tent on the shore of the lake. She loved swimming, fishing and just being on the lake. As the oldest child of Bob and Pearl Erwin to survive childhood Laura served as an assistant mother to the younger children; six of them, the seventh was born after she married and moved from home. The other older children got to help also. She seemed to have a special relationship with Edna. Laura never forgave Henry for being born on July third. She had a date for a picnic on the fourth with a young man who drove a Stutz Bearcat. Every time we drove by the Massac State Park along US Hwy 45 near Metropolis, IL she mentioned missing that picnic. Laura's mother, Pearl, didn't get to continue her schooling so she was bound and determined her girls were going to school. After Laura graduated from Tilghman High School in Paducah the family moved to Murray so she could go to Murry Teachers College. While Laura was attending college Edna was in the elementary training school. One day another child tore Edna's sock so Edna went to the President of the college to demand satisfaction. You can imagine Laura's embarrassment when they got her out of class to come get Edna. Laura did a lot of knitting as a means to earn money while in school. Being left handed she had to follow the directions in reverse. She could make the needles fly. Laura's early years of marriage were difficult. The depression was getting under way, her husband's family was having hard times. In addition to the father's cancer, some bad investments and a bank failure had cost them their farm and town house. It was necessary for them to all live together in a small rented house: two parents, two sisters-in-law and she and Cotton. She taught, Cotton worked in a restaurant and Thelma was a bookkeeper. Laura and Cotton could eat at the restaurant. Somehow they made it work. WD was born in 1932 in that same house. After teaching Home Economics in the South Fulton High School for two years Laura took a job with the Farm Security Administration, a Federal program that worked with poor farm families. She taught the wives how to improve their cooking, canning, sewing and parenting. She enjoyed being able to help others. In 1935 Laura was transferred to Paducah so she, Cotton and WD moved there. Cotton worked in a local restaurant. Late that year Cotton's mother, Etta, died. So they moved back to Fulton to be with Thelma and Bonnie Lou. Cotton opened his own restaurant and Laura commuted to Paducah. In 1938 both of Cotton's sisters married so he sold the restaurant and they moved back to Paducah. Then in 1940 Laura was transferred again, this time to Wickliffe. Cotton continued to work in Paducah and then in Mayfield until he opened a restaurant in Wickliffe. Laura continued in that job until they moved to East St. Louis in 1946. In 1948 after years of unsuccessful attempts to have other children, she and Cotton were delighted when Linda Anne was born. Laura took the necessary courses to be certified to teach elementary grades, and began teaching again when Linda was old enough go to kindergarten. She loved teaching and was very upset when she was forced to retire at age 65. She also taught literacy class at night for many years. She was an outstanding teacher. Parents were always trying to get their children in her class. Linda suffered brain damage at birth and was somewhat retarded. When Willis died in 1960 Linda was just 12 and Laura faced some very difficult decisions. She and WD agonized over the decision to have Linda committed to the state for care. Some family members questioned her motives, but as difficult as it was to do, it proved to be the best decision. Laura was an activist. She and a physician who also had a retarded daughter formed a state parent organization. With their leadership the organization became very effective in its efforts to lobby the Illinois state legislature to provide funds to improve the training and development programs for the mentally handicapped. Laura never seriously considered remarrying after her husband died when she was 54. She was committed to caring for Linda and absolutely intent on not being a burden to WD. She loved to travel and would take Linda and then later WD's children on trips; usually to visit one of her sisters. Laura was very active in her church. As the neighborhood changed around her church in East St. Louis she pushed for after school programs for the children and other activities to attract the people to come to church. She was very upset when the decision was made to close the church. She felt the Methodists had abandoned the neighborhood; so much so that she transferred her membership to an Episcopal Church. She became quite active there also. Her daughter's death at age twenty six was very difficult for her. You aren't supposed to bury your children. Linda had a difficult life. Ovarian cancer ended it quickly. In a way perhaps Linda's death was a relief to Laura. She was concerned what would happen to Linda when she died. She knew WD and his family would look out for her, but wasn't sure how Linda would cope without her. After she retired, Laura would spend the winter in Arizona and California with friends. She truly appreciated the relief the warm dry weather gave from her arthritis pain. She was an ardent walker, a habit she developed while trying to control her weight all those years. She loved taking long walks in the warm winter sunshine. She would return home tan and fit. She suffered a lot because of her arthritis, but rather than complain she pushed her self to keep on exercising and walking. She died at the pool where she went twice a week to swim and use the hot tub. Possibly the attribute that made Laura such and outstanding person was her sense of timing. She anticipated what would be needed and prepared for it. Getting her certification to teach in Illinois as Cotton's health began to fail; exploring the state program for retarded children and making arrangements for Linda to be committed; selling her home and moving to an apartment before it was too much for her; moving to be near WD when driving was becoming more difficult and she needed other assistance; handing WD her car keys one day and saying she wouldn't be using them any more, he would have to get her where she needed to go. She loved her grandchildren and rarely missed any performance in which they were involved. Perhaps her proudest moments were watching her grandson, Larry, receive his law degree; holding her first great-grandchild, Laura Jean's son , Shaun; standing, cheering as Leslie received her Ph D. Laura died four days later at age 86. She was a wonderful woman. WD has always considered himself very fortunate that she was his mother. WD can't not remember any cross words exchanged between them. She was always supportive of him. They enjoyed each others company and had long discussions, politics being a favorite topic. Enjoying her unqualified love was an enormous gift he cherishes in loving memory of her. Laura is buried beside her husband and daughter at Harmony Methodist Church near Crutchfield, KY.

General Notes for Child Linda Anne Leip

[Taylors and Leips.FTW]

[Leip.ged]

Linda is buried Harmony Methodist Church Cemetery, Crutchfield, KY, with her mother and father. Linda suffered brain damage at birth which caused retardation. She was able to function on about the fifth grade level. She evidently suffered a mild stroke when she was about 6 which effected the left side of her body. Her leg and arm was slightly smaller than the right ones. She had a tumor on her ovary removed at age 23. She developed cancer which was diagnosed on the 13th of November of 1974. It spread rapidly and she died on Christmas day. In spite of all her problems she was a loving, accepting person who taught us all a great deal about accepting others for what they were, not how they might look or behave because of physical problems. Her father had trouble accepting Linda's situation. He died when she was 12. Her mother had to work to earn a living for them. There were no programs in the local schools for Linda to attend. It was necessary for her mother to make some arrangement for Linda's care. Laura, her mother, made the courageous decision to commit Linda to state care. Laura and WD took Linda to the state facility in Lincoln, IL in December of 1960. It was a very difficult trip, especially the ride home. The state required that there could be no visits for six weeks after her commitment. As a result Linda couldn't be home for Christmas. That was very difficult for her mother and the rest of the immediate family. Laura was criticized by some relatives for "getting rid of Linda", but those who were close to the situation realized that Linda was far happier than she had been. She enjoyed the structured environment without unrealistic expectations of her. Before, she had been trying to cope in a world that required more knowledge and skills than she possessed or could ever achieve. The first assessments of Linda's abilities were misleading. Her mother had spent so much time with her developing her academic skills as much as possible that it seemed Linda would be able to master enough skills to work in the community and live in a sheltered home. However, after several different attempts at training it was decided she lacked the necessary ability to achieve that level of independence. Linda spent the last years of her life living with other people of similar abilities in an assisted living type home where she had assigned duties such as setting the tables for meals, cleaning up in the kitchen, taking care of her own room. She seemed very content. She was always anxious to come to her mother's home for a visit, or go on a trip with her mother, but she was always glad to get back to her home.
